I have a new favourite cinema, hello Lido…read more Lido appears to be the final piece of the puzzle in the rejuvenation of the Glenferrie Road precinct. The team behind the Cameo in Belgrave and The Classic in Elsternwick have done a fabulous job of bringing this old dame back to life again, keeping some touches of the by-gone cinema area, while adding touches of modern to formulate a new cinema experience. We went the first week and a new cinema smells like fresh paint. It's almost as good as the new car smell. The popcorn machine hadn't even arrived when we first were there. Since then, we have visited Lido and experienced the Jazz Bar - for $10 on a Friday or Saturday night, watch a band perform in an intimate space under a cinema. The jazz bar has table service and on the night we went, the second set had free popcorn, which was devoured. There is a great mix of old and new movies here, plus special screenings and Q & A. I feel like I work for Lido with this review, I really do like it here, so much so I became a member and you can find me there at least once a fortnight. Welcome to the neighbourhood Lido, we are going to be forever friends.

The reason I came here was simply to check out a cinema that I hadn't yet visited, and it was quite nice. You get more of a feel of an old fashioned cinema than those modern multiplexes. However, they have given the cinema a bit of a makeover meaning that there are a few more screens that there was originally.

I have to say though that, if I had to choose between Hoyts in say Vic Gardens and this one, then whichever one was closest to me at the time would win the battle. The Gold Class suite however is a different ball game. We had free tickets and went to see Captain America there and loved it. Everyone says and knows that Gold Class tickets are pricey but you know what? The service that you get and comfort that you experience makes it worth it. There is a bar, where you can hang out for drinks and they also have a seating area for you to wait when you get there. You are assigned a waitress who takes your order and you can pick the time for them to bring your food/drink to you. The seats are recliner ones and sooo comfy. You have a small storage area where you can store your bag or anything else you want out of the way when you're in there. The aisles are very spacious and I really like the layout and how they only have four seats in the middle so they don't disturb you when they bring out orders. There are a couple of staff who hang out at the back and you have a button on your tray table next to your seat so you can call them up if you need anything. Until I've experienced Hoyts's La Premiere, Village's Gold Class has the thumbs up for the time being for me!

Yes it is featured in the Village Ads that play in the cinemas all over the country but that is not the point! As a result of all the advertising and the crowds that are always converging on Doncaster Shopping Centre, the cinemas are always extremely crowded. The lines for tickets can get so long that you can literally watch as the movie you want to see gets sold out before you reach the counter. At least it also gives you plenty of time to choose another but it is still frustrating and has happened to me twice. The candy bar lines can also be ridiculously long, even when the maximum number of staff are serving. Add to that the fact that most cinemas get filled right to the front and it is enough to turn me off going there on busy friday and saturday nights. The staff are friendly and courteous, the cinemas tend to be well maintained and clean and the screens don't have too many problems. So apart from the crowds the cinemas themselves are pretty nice. Unfortunately Doncaster - the crowded nature of your venue is a deal breaker for me. Adios.

They serve all of the usual treats you need with the added bonus of barista coffee and alcoholic beverages that can be taken into the cinema. Plus the popcorn is healthy!! They don't tend to show all of the blockbusters but they do show a wide range of films including some art house and foreign films.

The cinema screens are hidden by a curtain and the seats are very comfortable (great for those three hour movies.) This large art deco cinema complex shows are range of popular movies with particular emphasis on art house releases and world cinema. For the price of a movie ticket these days you want more from your movie going experience and the Rivoli is one of the best.
