5 start hotel just not up to scratch…read more Firstly, this is not a whingefest, just a really disappointing experience which I find inexcusable for a 5 star hotel. Lot of little things resulted in a poor stay. - stained sheets (rust or blood) which we were promised would be changed immediately, but an hour later still nothing done. - restaurant (Riverside) just not on par. From giving away our table one morning after we'd been seated to having my breakfast delivered to the wrong table the next, non-existent service and limited dinner menu, it was just not good enough. - incorrect information bring given by concierge about availability of hire bikes - beds had a distinct ridge in the middle (no doubt result of 2 singles being pushed together) which made it very uncomfortable In short, it says 5 stars, but it really isn't and probably shouldn't market itself as such.

There is easy transition between levels, but not a whole lot of space for two cars crossing paths. I would advise driving slow through here. The elevator is located at one end of each level, so you may have to walk a bit to gain access to it. The elevator is kind of old and makes weird noises. But, it works. This is an unusual carpark, I think it is important that I point out a couple of things. Firstly, you must pay for your ticket at a ticket both near the valet part of the Playford across the street. I took a photo so you know what it looks like. There are a bunch of signs explaining this, but I see a lot of people still getting confused. The other thing is that the buttons for the elevator on the bottom level are not clearly marked. You will see a grey button. Hit that one to get into it. Final thing to note, is that this carpark is cheap if you are stopping in town during business hours. I'll just point out a few things that sticks out when I rethink the experience. The room is rather spacious, and the color choice of gold and black made the place seems very classy indeed. Bedding and pillows are very comfortable (the best I've tried so far is Pullman - Sydney). The queen bed is big enough to squeeze 2 adults and 2 kids. The coffee bar in room comes complete with a nespresso type of coffee machine. Complementary coffee available. The bathroom is alright, nothing too outlandish or special, the shampoo and body wash however is just unbelievably refreshing (yeah, I can't believe I'm saying this, I'm in love with a hotel provided shampoo) Appelles Apothecary & lab. That's the branding of the toiletries. OUTSTANDING. There's pool, and jacuzzi available in the basement. The kids love it. Oh, also a good size gym there, even though we didn't use it. All in all, a good day/night spent.

And granted the spa's are in the suites and they are a lot nicer than the general run of the mill rooms most people would get. Plus they have a pool, with spa, and fitness room on the roof - which I find kind of cool! Personally if I was going to pay somewhere, and it was in the city for a night out, I would pick somewhere else, purely because the whole point of staying in there is not to have to worry about getting home at the end of the night, but this is on the outskirts of the city and a little far to walk after a night out. I would prefer to stay right in the middle of the city if I am going to bother paying to stay in there at all. If it's my anniversary and I want to stay inside a room all night I would still pick somewhere else because thinking about how many people would have had sex in a hotel spa in a private room well and truly puts me off getting into one. I mean it's not like the one with the pool which has chlorine cycling through it to kill the germs. A live band was playing for the background music and for those that wished to dance. The wine list was extensive although no sparkling red by the glass. The bottle of red we did get costs about $10 in the bottle shop and was marked up steeply to $48. As it was Christmas in July it was a set menu with tiny freshly baked bread rolls to start with salted butter. The entrees were a choice of three. I had the pork belly which was divine and my husband the prawn cutlets. Even though it was an entree only three prawns on the plate seemed skimpy. Perhaps he should have gone for the warm caramelised shallot & Woodside ashes goats cheese tart (v), baby herb salad with white balsamic glaze. We asked the waiter to light the candle on our table as ours was the only table not alight. Mains were a choice of four. I had the rump which was cooked the perfect medium. My husbands turkey was a disappointment. His serve was large but the turkey was processed and not 100% turkey meat. Other choices were seared Tasmanian salmon fillet (gf), crushed peas, roast spices potato, crisp pancetta with tomato oil, and the meal of semolina and ricotta gnocchi (v) mushroom ragout, thyme, parmesan cheese. All mains are served with sides of table fresh garden salad with balsamic dressing and steamed seasonal vegetables. However, neither the salad and vegetables were given to us and we didn't realise until dessert was served so it was too late. My husband mentioned it to the waiter, and he acknowledged it was forgotten but did not make amends with the offer of anything complimentary. Dessert was a choice of three. I had the passionfruit meringue smash and didn't like the pieces of coconut in the smooth coconut cream. My husband was again disappointed with his third course of plum pudding as it was half the size of a cupcake and didn't taste as nice as mine. Perhaps again he should have chosen the chocolate and cherry trifle with toffee and custard bubbles. The atmosphere was nice but the difference in meal quality ranged from excellent to pretty average, so I wouldn't go back in a hurry, especially due the wine prices.

What an eclectic bar it is - they have a Facebook page, the Karaoke is on Wednesday night, Red Uncensored and Terri-Louise Kelly may be reciting poetry on one night a month along with plenty of other local poets and there are bands on a Thursday and Sunday night. You can get nosh a la pub for around ten dollars, nothing too fancy but it will fill your guts and the locals will fill your head full of fun stories and strange sayings. This is an old school pub with a decent drive through and a pretty good car park. There is an outdoor area for the smokers and you would go a long way to find such an easy going and chilled out venue that deals in rock and roll as well as poetry. I quite like it because it hasn't got trendy, and it is not trying to get trendy. Who needs to be trendy when you have all the poets in Adelaide massing in the back room and waxing lyrical every few weeks - that says it all. Depending on the time of day (I think), one of the elevators exclusively goes to the rooftop bar. The room was spacious, with a nice comfy bed and pillows. We had a nice view of the city. The bathroom was large. Nice soaps, fluffy towels and great water pressure in the shower. We could walk everywhere, including the shopping arcade across the street. Everything in Adelaide is about a 15 minute walk in any direction. Lots of shops, restaurants, coffee. Even the nice Botanical Gardens was within a walkable distance. The bar on the top floor gives a nice view. It's cozy but seating is limited. This boutique hotel is a nice change from the chains--I guess, until it's taken over as a Kimpton in 2026.

The overall feel was extremely comfortable and it was easy to just settle in and feel at home. The staff were great, especially at the bar. Bar/dining area opens to the sidewalk seating. In October the weather was pretty perfect. It took me a full day to understand the bartending staff. The Adelaide accent is a bit stronger than Melbourne or Sydney. But they are very patient with Americans who ask for everything to be repeated three times. I stayed four nights and had an excellent experience. Would recommend it and would stay here again.

Before any other Yelpers start waxing on about their opinion compared to mine, yes there are some nice places, but I think in the city the nicest places are the historical ones that have been made over - until you stay over at Mantra you can't compare. Big rooms, very lush, plush and highly relaxing. Of course you pay a high price, but compared to other capital cities the price is relatively good; it is high for Adelaide. But expect great service plus, and great rooms plus, and you may be visiting, but end up staying in your room the whole time you are here, because it is nice.
