Looks like I was more impressed than the other reviewer here... I came here in need of some new running shoes for working out. My dad recommended it as he's a runner (and is a VIP there). They have a very good selection on shoes and a very friendly and knowledgeable staff which I found really helpful 'cause in the past I've always bought my shoes from Foot Locker and I often go for the prettiest color. Here they have this "Shoe Dog" that analyzes your foot and what the best shoe is for you which seemed pretty high tech but probably was more for show and wow factor, but I guess I'm an easy target and it worked on me! I bought the inserts that were custom made based on what type of foot I had! They had a big selection of running clothes and accessories as well. It's nice how much attention they give you and all the knowledge about the shoes they have, but for all the individual attention and one on one they give, they really need a bigger staff. When I came in I had about a 5 minute wait (which they told me it might be longer) but once it was my turn, a bigger crowd showed up and I noticed they were waiting a while while I was being helped. My associate helping me was the manager and I found her to be very knowledgeable and friendly and polite. She did step out once to do her manager duties, but I was ok with that because she very polite about it. Also to comment on the review below me, I too did the Shoe Dog thing which I found very helpful and I didn't get shocked by the treadmill (as did a few other people while I was there and I didn't notice that they got shocked) so I guess they fixed that. As I had my dad's VIP status, I was able to use the 90 day return, which means that if you use your shoe and aren't satisfied with it within 90 you can change it for a different one, something that I don't know many or any stores to do (with a worn shoe). So far I'm very happy with my shoes, I've been to the gym 4 times with them so unless the next few times really prove me wrong, I don't think I'll be using this feature, but it's good to know it's there. There are also a few extra perks with the VIP status but that one is the one that impresses me the most. But yeah, really I'm not giving them the 5th star because they should have a bigger staff. Otherwise I was really happy with them and a little sad to see that others didn't have as good of an experience as I did. read more

Honestly, not the best running specialty store I have ever been to. When they do gait analysis, they do not even ask you to run on the treadmill to check your pronation if you have any. They only ask you to walk, which really is not that helpful. Furthermore, they don't ask you to run in different shoes to see if the various shoes fix problems in your gait. Worse, they only have one treadmill for customers to do analysis whereas other specialty shops have 3 or so. So I had to wait for 25 minutes to do a minimally helpful analysis. I spent 2.5 hours in that store and it was unnnecessary for me to be there that long. I did end up buying from them because I was short on time, but I should have gone to Jack Rabbit in NYC. Jack Rabbit has locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan, which can be quite a drive, but it is totally worth it. They do all the aforementioned processes that Road Runner fails to do. As well, the staff is wayyyy less pushy than Road Runner, who try to upsell you and keep trying to get you to join their VIP program. I find such marketing techniques a huge turnoff. I'm a fan only because I'm not a sucker and I understand business. This is a retail store that makes sure that the employees do their best to "push" the VIP program. It is what it is, I've worked retail and have been in the same situation promoting something that costs people money. It's not easy and as long as you, the customer, understand this then it shouldn't be a problem. Be OK with saying no. Anyway, the overall floor service is pretty decent. They are not pushy in that sense and we were only aproached when we actually had a question or needed help. I appreciate that and that's how it should be. The staff that we dealt with was knowledgable, friendly and made sure that we got the help that we needed. Overall I was happy with the experience... Everyone here is SO friendly and helpful. They are really knowledgeable about running, too. They spent a long time with the hubs and I helping us find just the right shoes. The VIP club entails an annual fee ($20, sometimes less if it's a special) and entitles you to 10-20% off retail price of everything. I have gone in two separate occasions only to wait around 15 minutes each time and walk out . No one asks if you need help no one makes eye contact, just awful at multitasking with customer service . I went over to a salesman who said I will be right with you only to have him take someone that walked in after I did. I went in for custome insoles because of my horrible feet pain. As i walked in i was instantly helped by an amazing gentleman named Jet. I was really impressed with how him and the rest of the staff were so helpful and patient with everyone they helped. Jet went above and beyond finding me the right fit for my feet by explaining everything that was wrong about them and what they can do to fix it. Went into the store, immediately yelled at by someone at far end of store to stay where I am until someone is available to help me. Waited and waited and finally called back out to anyone... I just wanted to look at the sneakers. Again, no one came over, but yelled out , ok you can look but you can't touch anything. What? Never in my 60 plus years have I ever been spoken to in such a rude manner. How about walking over to the customer when he enters a store and speaking in a respectful, cordial manner. Just got duped by this company called road runner, they charged me for an automatic annual fee for $39.99 which I never signed up and consented for. called the customer hotline, able to talked to a girl named Dierdre who is so obnoxious, will talk at the same time your talking, so disrespectful for someone representing the company. I just had the worst experience at this store that I am actually stunned. I have been a satisfied customer for several years now, and over time have started bringing my whole family in for shoes which, as other reviewers have noted, is not cheap. So I bought my 8 year old son a pair of Nikes and about 2 weeks later, the rubber is separating from the shoe. I figure this should be no problem, since I have a V.I.P. membership and I was told they'll take back any shoe for 3 months, no questions asked. I went in not expecting a confrontation or an issue; literally any shoe should last 2 weeks, especially one with a suggested retail price of $90!!! Instead what I got was a lecture from store manager Derek. He told me that I have to get a different pair of shoes as that is the V.I.P. policy. He blamed my son and said things like, "Well I don't know what he was doing in the shoe," and said that the shoes were extremely worn and destroyed. He acted like he was doing me some kind of favor for actually exchanging the shoe. Oh, and so I did get a different shoe (even though I think I should be able to get the same shoe if that's what my son wants!) and the Adidas shoe I chose was about $10 cheaper than the Nike shoe. Tell me why Derek charged me $4.50 for a CHEAPER shoe? AND, when I asked him why and showed him the 2 prices, he said that I only paid $67.45 for the Nike originally. So ok, apparently I bought it on sale but in my opinion the right thing to do is at least make it an even exchange after I have been through this inconvenience! I was training to do the tough mudder and I was referred here to get the customized orthotics to help me run and new shoes. This place was awesome. First they give you analysis, taking in your information about how much you run per average in a week, what you're training for, how you land on your feet while running, what aches and pains you already have, and where you put most of your weight in a normal stance. After that they mold orthotics to your feet, and the areas you need to help you. They then tell you what kind of shoe you need, whether it a neutral shoe or a stability shoe. They have a member of their team help you find the shoe that you would like and pull out a couple different shoes they feel would be best for you. They put your orthotics in and encourage you to run around the store to get a feel in the shoe. If they don't have the exact shoe you want in your color/size they will order it for you. I also went with my dad who was having pain in his knee from running. They helped him out and let him try on a couple of different braces to feel which one felt best for him. The team they have is very helpful and very personable. They talked to us as if we were friends and not just customers, with them trying to get the most of our money. Updating a review because I bought dedicated running shoes this time around. The initial fitting and experience was awesome, but once I got a few miles in in the real world, I realized that I should've gone with a wider shoe. I came in tonight 10 minutes to closing thinking it would be a quick exchange. The model shoe I had actually didn't have an extra wide size, so I had to be fitted all over again. I told my Fit Expert, Laura, who is a doll for being so patient and helping with me, that I'd come back tomorrow since we were past closing at this point. She insisted that we find a solution while it was convenient for me, which she did. I hope someone from corporate sees this because it's important to give people that go above and beyond to get the recognition they deserve, ESPECIALLY when we're almost 20 minutes past closing. Gordon, who is always a pleasure to deal with, checked me out while Laura went to assist another customer that rolled in fairly late. Just wanted to mention that if Roadrunner Sports ever opens up a store in Hawaii, he volunteers to be the first one to head down. :-) Florida is a close second. Stellar service, painless transaction, and really a model of what a retail environment should be like. I hope the company treats the employees as well as they treat me. You can justify having a brick and mortar front in a digital age when your staff is this good. 10/10, will definitely shop here again. read more

I haven't been back to Road Runner for a couple of years, but I was so happy to know that Beth was there to fit me for shoes again. This new fitting process was really insane! She took a picture of my foot and then showed it to me in 3D, It was fun and shocking to see it on the oversized screen...kind of scary,but luckily it showed I was still good to stay in the same category of shoes with the insoles to help my knees. Let me say first that I rarely write online reviews, but I was so moved by the incredible service of Beth and Mike that I wanted to share the story of my first visit there will y'all. Comfort. That's the Road Runner thesis. Comfort for your feet - your feet will be in heaven. (I never had custom insoles, but once I felt what they were like, I left the store with not just one, but three of them!). Comfort in their space/store. Mike and Beth, and the rest of the staff, through their warmth, humor, and expertise, make you feel at home and at ease. When someone signs up as a VIP a bell rings and everyone cheers. There isn't a whiff of condescension among the staff or the clients - I've *never* seen anything like that in an athletic or specialty shop (think bike snobs, or jocks who have never had my BMI and couldn't imagine it that they have no patience for people who aren't on their level). A very unique place, hugely positive atmosphere. Comfort in being a runner. I've always been somewhat intimidated by runners, never having been a good one myself (despite attempts otherwise). I was pushed to the store by receiving a gift card (and I guess a not-so-subtle hint) from a family member. I was so "gymtimidated" to go to the store that I hadn't gone for over half a year. But I left Road Runner as excited and satisfied as I was fearful and intimidated when I entered, because of Beth and Mike. Not only did they answer my clearly novice questions with patience, but, more important, when I admitted that I didn't even know where to start, so overwhelmed I was by my ignorance (what the heck is a complex carb anyway?), they told me that the best I could do for myself is...the best I could do. Don't worry that others can run 5k without breaking a sweat; you run as long and as far as you need. Don't focus on how it seems that everyone knows what to wear and what to eat, and if you don't adhere to what is apparently such common knowledge and so blatantly obvious that nobody talks about it, you will keel over with premature arthritis; "experiment with what works for you," Mike told me; "as long as you have the right things on your feet you can run naked," Beth said. These comments might not have seemed a big deal to expert runners like them, but they meant the world to an anxious beginner like myself. Why? They took a huge load off my shoulders of what I *should* be doing and instead told me that what I was doing, rather than falling short of some invisible standard, was actually great. They opened my eyes to that I might actually become good at this - Beth casually "put the bug" in my ear about competitions and races, events that I thought I could never participate in in my lifetime. I guess you could say that Beth and Mike didn't only make me comfortable in my sneakers, they made me comfortable in my identity as a runner, and, by extension, in myself. Comfort, in so many ways. Beth and Mike, thanks for that extraordinary gift. You've caught Road Runner one very loyal customer. I want to talk about the good and the bad of roadrunner sports in this review. I have to say its a great business and the fact that they sell pretty much every shoe imaginable at 20-25% discounts is amazing. The fact that this place exists has saved me tremendous hassle as I have a problem foot and have struggled to find any shoes in the last 2-3 years that I can run in. So I'm certainly not her to knock roadrunner and I would recommend anyone who is into running to join their VIP program as it really has a lot of great incentives. Now, the bad: I wish they gave more training to their employees of all the various shoes that they carry. I often go in there, and after waiting 10-15 minutes for any kind of service, I don't get the most knowledgeable salespeople all the time. Are they super nice and friendly? Always. They just don't seem to know a lot about many types of shoes. Most conversations go like this: "So I see you are wearing a stability shoe, NIke just came out with a stability shoe [that we are trying to sell and we have a bunch in the back] so I think you would do great in this shoe. I usually respond: "No, I can't run in Nike's. Or asics. Or brooks. You can try me in saucony but the only shoes I have any success with are Hokas. Yes, I have tried your custom insoles and they don't really work for me." This is usually met with a "try the Bondi." Then I explain that the Bondi is not a stability shoe. So look, I don't expect the world or anything, but it would be nice if the people there were trained in all types of shoes with what is out there and even the ones that are online only. Now I'm certainly going to keep shopping here for as long as I run, but its just a wish for the employees to be more knowledgeable about the shoes that the store carries. read more

I have to admit I have heard of Road Runner Sports but always assumed they were super expensive. So both my sons needed cross country track sneakers and we decided to see what it was like. As soon as we walked in we met Neil Vyas. He totally took any fear or apprehension I had away immediately!! He took his time but and explained every step of getting my boys perfect running shoes. This guy knows his stuff!! He was extremely helpful. He is an asset to Road Runner Sports and when I go back there and I will it will be Neil who will be helping me again!! read more

Although RRS has friendly and helpful staff, I am giving them 1 star due to their shady business practices. I was there on Wednesday evening and there were several times I felt as though staff were not completely upfront on things. In other stores I have purchased sneakers, you are automatically told that you can not get a full refund if the shoes have been worn outside. Throughout my time at RRS, I heard several staff members tell potential customers that there was essentially no obligation since they had three months to "wear the shoes and bring them back if they don't work out". Not once did they mention that if they did this they could only get store credit or an exchange. Then there's the prices in the actual gear. I showed the young man helping me out a coupon I had received via email for 20% off and he explained that essentially it's a 10% and another 10%. When I asked what the final price would be he explained that the price shown on the display is already discounted since it is the VIP rate, which means that I would really only get 10% off with my 20% off coupon. Whatever I guess it makes sense to them but I have honestly never seen such a concept in other stores I frequent. As other reviews have mentioned the staff is also extremely pushy and try to upsell you. They promote that VIP membership, which costs $19.99, and gets automatically renewed and charged to your card yearly unless you call to cancel it. It's annoying but then if you don't become a VIP, I think that you may not be able to get a refund. They tried selling me on the insoles which I flat out refused. They also suggested that I get socks which were "probably no more than $10", but lo and behold when I get to the register the 3 pack were $30. Needless to say I was pretty irritated. If I'm paying $300 for two pairs of sneakers, two pairs of socks, and a VIP membership, it'd be nice for the people at RRS to just be honest about pricing. To make matters worse, when I get home I start going through their online store. I immediately see that the VIP membership is going for $1.99 online and that one of the pairs of sneakers I bought was $20 cheaper!!!! I immediately contacted their customer service and was given a $18 refund for the VIP membership and ordered my pair of sneakers as well. The next day I went to the store and returned everything. Luckily I hadn't worn the sneakers outside, nor had I worn the socks so I was able to get my full refund. Honestly I will never shop here again, I'd rather just go online and buy my stuff that way. read more

Two days ago, I was fitted for walking sneakers by BETH. After a comprehensive analysis of my feet and walking style, she helped me understand which type of sneakers would best sort my needs. She had the patience of an angel as I tried on many different sneakers, until I finally found a good fit and feel. I was there close to an hour and a half, and BETH treated me like a VIP the whole time, answering my questions and getting me more sneakers to try on. ZERO STARS! I have been shopping at Road Runner for years, I overlooked their obnoxious pushy insert business as well as selling their VIP benefits, and the numerous times I walked out because everyone was too busy selling shoes to actually have someone at the register however today was the worst, I purchased as pair of sneakers online and when I went in to exchange for a 1/2 size smaller than my usual size, as i bought a different brand and it runs bigger. I was told no I can't make an even exchange because I will first of all lose my VIP dollars which I had applied to my new sneakers as well as my VIP 25% off coupon which I had also applied making these sneakers a good deal. Anthony the sales associate ,finally agreed to give me 25% off new sneakers but nothing he could do about the VIP $$, I agreed as I really liked the sneakers but then they had none in the store and he couldn't do an online transaction because the sneakers or the transaction was not in the computer????? Meanwhile I had the invoice/ receipt which came with the sneakers??? and he was able to accept the return for the tank top which was on the SAME EXACT invoice, and he said no big deal "come back another day "because if i return by mail I have to pay another $9.89 deducted from my return!! I asked if there was someone else who could help me and he laughed and said "yeah me...and I can't help"well guess what I will NEVERE go back to your store and I will tell everyone of my friends the same story and I will NEVER go back to your store. read more

While I completely stand by my original review, I do note that when I next went in (NOT for shoes) the manager knew who I was and what I'd experienced and offered to, next time I need new shoes, order one of every kind they have in my size and stability requirements and let me try them on in-store with the experts to help. I appreciate this greatly. However it should have been offered as a solution when the problem occurred rather than it requiring me to write a negative review to get to this point. Where to start. I was initially told to try Fleet Feet, but tried Road Runners place because it was on my way to work. This is what i get for cutting corners. I was under the care of a podiatrist for a stress fracture in my foot. I had instructions to seek out a stability shoe. I went into the place telling them what i needed and they told me to sign up on the shoe dog list to be analyzed, and it would only take 5 minutes. I met with Jorge, and he put me on the treadmill barefoot (gross) While speaking, i told him i already had done something like this, and i had an instep. he insisted and i humored him, i saw i was a 9.5 on the metal foot measure thing... and still put me in a 9. He "analyzed" my foot via the shoe dog and told me i had an instep (i told you that already) and that i "needed a stability shoe" ( i told you that already). i was less than impressed that he needed a computer to verify everything i already told him. He had me step on a squishy gym mat and told me to rock back and forth on the mat (contouring...aka 'custom making' a insole, i later found out) Which i never requested, nor asked my permission for. He ushered me over to a young girl and spoke to her about my situation with the instep and the fracture and i needed stability shoe. So here i am sitting on the bench rolling my eyes, checking my watch... thinking "I JUST NEED SHOES" enough with the pomp and circumstance. This chick goes in the back and pulls out 3 shoes. Nike, Brooks and Asics. I never was brought to the wall and pick out a style or color i liked, she did that for me. I try all 3 on and like the asics best, plus it was what my podiatrist recommended. I told her this and she was like, well with this insoles you won't need the ones he gave you. I said, no ill probably end up returning these insoles you made me because i don't need them if I'm under a doctors care. She's like, "well... my moms a podiatrist, who's yours?" I told her it was none of her business. She informs me that i had to join the store's VIP club, otherwise i couldn't return my merchandise. Im like, okay well i don't need these insoles but if i join, whatever....big deal. The asics were tight, but she said the shoes loosen up. BY NOW I'm behind schedule and i go to the counter with my tight shoes and insoles i never wanted. I get asked if i want to join the club. (oh by the way its 20 bucks to join, thanks for telling me, chick.) Im like, no thanks, I've never returned sneakers in my life, why start now. and i don't need 10% off, i just want my sneakers. She rings up the insoles i intend on returning after having my podiatrist look at them. 80 dollars. 80 FREAKING DOLLARS for something "custom made" in the store that i never wanted in the first place?!?!!!?! i nearly died. These insoles were no more well made than the insoles that come in brand new sneakers. I couldn't believe it. The sneakers were 90 bucks, and had to be ordered because they only carry one color in store, and i wanted black sneakers. So i get raped for insoles, i expected to pay 90 ish for new( tight, but expected to loosen up) sneakers, and the sneak attack 20 bucks to join their precious VIP club. I left the store feeling like i just been 'had'. I ran in the asics and they were tight, as expected. and then i felt like the shoes were way too tight to fit properly. I spoke to a running friend of mine, and he said he running shoes should "be comfortable beginning to end." I had an appointment with my podiatrist and showed him the insoles (which he wasn't impressed with) and he has had no less than 5 patients come to him complaining about this store. He believes that the employees at this store are borderline "diagnosing" foot problems where they have no authority or education to do so. A SHOE DOG is no substitute for a doctor. and i completely agree. so after having a completely bad experience at this store, i wanted to return EVERYTHING and start over. I did so, and with no fight from the staff. I was waiting in line behind another girl who was returning her shoes because they didn't fit. I had already gone to Fleet Feet in Mahwah and bought new Brooks stability shoes ( which i LOVE) and was wearing. I totally endorsed Fleet Feet in front of the staff to this girl and I'm sure she bought her new pair of shoes there instead. So to sum up. The people selling you the shoes here are no more than part time employees who don't know what they're talking about. If you need running shoes, go to Fleet Feet in Hoboken or Mahwah. You won't get swindled into buying (expensive) insoles you won't need or a club you don't need to be a part of. New runners beware, if you go in not knowing what you need, they'll sell you everything you don't need. I can't wait for this place to go out of business. Hmmm where to start.... I went here to look for racing shoes for 5K competitions, and the sales guy must have rubbed me the wrong way. He asked me what my times were, and then said that I shouldn't purchase racing shoes if i'm not a serious runner or a track athlete. (I am a pretty serious runner and run often). He kept recommending all the other running shoes, which i already had. I just wanted shoes to race in that were lighter, and cheaper too. I walked right out after that and didn't even try on a shoe. I guess I gave two stars for a time I went prior the most recent experience, where they performed the gait analysis and fit you into the correct shoe depending on the biomechanics of your foot. I got a decent shoe after, so I'll give them 2 stars instead of one. Tons of shoes and clothes, but I wasn't happy with the staff AT ALL. read more

Horrible experience. The staff member who helped me begrudgingly helped me get different shoes to try on, seeming annoyed if I asked a question about the shoe. I wanted to try a different type of running shoe with more stability and wanted to ensure that I chose the right one. After choosing a pair I went to checkout where I was greeted by another unenthused employee. I asked many detailed questions about their return policy since I was nervous the shoes wouldn't feel right after a run. She ensured me (after my many questions about the return policy) that with a receipt I could exchange up to 60 days, that I didn't need to pay to join their reward membership to exchange shoes if I had the receipt. I checked and double checked. The shoes ended up hurting my feet after a one mile trial run so I went to exchange them for a new pair, only to be told they were final sale, that the employee told me the wrong thing. That it's their policy and there was absolutely nothing they could do about it. So now I am out $120 with shoes that hurt my feet and am never ever shopping here again. Terrible customer service all the way around. I will just buy my shoes on Amazon from now on. Learned my lesson. read more
