Let me start by saying our family loves Roakes. My children now take their children and the staff has usually been a big part of keeping the tradition alive. However, there is one employee in particular that just seems like she hates her job And serving loyal customers. The woman in question is about 5ft tall, wears glasses, and is probably in her late 40's. The other employees see her horrid attitude and are apologetic about it, and once, another employee slipped me a note apologizing for how I had just been spoken to. Honestly, THAT is one reason we've continued coming to Roakes. It's obvious you have employees who Do care, and the food is so good. It's just a shame how customers are spoken down to by this one employee. And I hate to say this, but she's coming across as racist. When I came in with my Latino friend, her tone totally shifted into a Slow, Condescending and Demeaning cadence when she had just spoken conversationally, with me. My friend says he's used to it, but it's unacceptable. The other women are all so sweet, it's really sad one bad apple is spoiling the experience for my family, as Roakes is one of Our family traditions. I hope Jim is aware of how this employee speaks to and insults his "family" of loyal customers. read more

It definitely was unique to visit if you can find off-street parking. It was challenging to eat inside...it isn't for anyone who is claustrophobic...very limited right seating. Much of the space is also the counter and waiting area to order. Feels more like an airplane restroom...very cramped. Oh, you can take to go or eat in your car...like other fast food places... They also have an outside ordering window. The Coney Dog with the sauce they use was good. Fries were a little greasy but okay. I was not comfortable eating in the space inside. Big people would feel worse. Give it a try and get your own take on a tiny place. They should consider relocating to a better site with more room, but it would lose that 1950's cramped corner diner vibe... read more

Quite a throwback to a much earlier time. My son swears by this place and I am starting to get it's charm. My wife and I went and I ordered the $6 special (small cheeseburger with Coney sauce - think chili without beans), fries and a 16 oz soda. The wife had the foot long and a small soda. We we're fortunate to find a place to sit inside today as it was windy and a bit chilly outside. Service was pretty quick. The burger was quite good if a bit small. They toast the bun, the burger was small and thin, reminding me of the in-n-out hamburgers. The concert sauce added great flavor and I was reaching for the napkins from the first bite to keep from wearing some of it. The wife's hotdog was good, she went for the basics with only mustard and ketchup. There were plenty of fries for both of us in the basket that came with the special I ordered. The fries we are were a lot lighter than what I saw in earlier pictures, I would have to go back and order some more to get a picture as they didn't really last that long at our table. The inside seating area is cramped, maybe 4 or 5 tables for about 12 total on one side and counter seating for another 4-6 on the other side. I think the whole thing is a very old, converted hot dog stand kind of a trailer. I will go back and either eat in the car or get takeout. They were very busy when I was there and everyone was having a good time. Probably not the place to go if you are in a big hurry when the parking lot is looking full. read more

Their hours are wrong, at least on mondays it seems as though they close at 8PM NOT 9. It looked super good though, very reasonable prices.

We were excited about our first visit. We saw a sign it could take a while for the food, which it did. That was fine. One issue I had was we waited in a line outside. I saw some people go inside, but never saw them come out to order. Then I realized they took orders inside and everyone who knew that basically jumped the line making our wait even longer. Not cool, they should have said something to us in line. I got the chili dog. The dog was good and had that snap when you bit into it. Thumbs up to that. The chili was good, but very scarce. The bun absolutely sucked and ruined it. It was hard and dry. That was totally uncool. My wife and son said their bun for the burger was also the same. They said the burger was just ok. Oh my gosh. Do not come waste your money here. I was excited to get foot long hotdogs to take to my parents. It's been on McLoughlin my whole life Anyways I ordered and picked up 4 long dogs and fries. Yuck. It was 30 bucks and disgusting. Bread was stale. I love love love Roake's! However, I really do not like what the virus has pushed the staff into... I absolutely get it that OHSA and .... has forced them into a very tight situation.... I get it! What I really do not get is how they are choosing to implement the restrictions!!! I have been in there two times where foolish loving customers gather inside causally to wait to order, to pick up an order or God forbid to sit in the 4 spots available to actually eat. On the past 2 visits, the inside suddenly fills above the 4 person limit which instantly provokes a screaming session by one of the employees screaming and shouting at those present that they are only allowed 4 people inside while figuratively forcing everyone outside. We love this place!! They serve the absolute best coney dogs and coney fries I've had across the entire country! Their prices are great for the delicious food they serve and staff is generally very friendly and fast. The staff is always working hard and preparing orders fast in the small space they have. This is my favorite place to eat in the world. My family has been coming since the 40's, and the quality has never declined (at least at the original location on McLoughlin). Other things are great, like their burgers, but nowadays I have to come down from Olympia so I ALWAYS get the long coney with everything. I have been a regular for a couple of months. That should not matter of course. I ordered three burgers to go .1 double bacon cheese burger extra pickle, 1 deluxe cheese light sauce, and 1 deluxe bacon without sauces but spread on the side. With 2 platters of fries. What I got was not that and I feel really crappy to call and complain.I have loved this place until now. The food that did end up in my bag was two small fries or platters that looked like smalls. Threes single burgers& not a double with some kind of tomato that was like the end of the slices not really the tomatoes I usually get. No spread on the side. The burgers that was supposed to be no sauce was also pretty weak. I would never leave this review but I guess here it is. The service was good and friendly with smiles and all but the end product was not like I have had every other time I visited this usually good place. I did end lup calling and I was offered to replace the food. I feel that I should not have to open the bag and inspect every item when the bag of food cost $34.75. Plus a nice tip! Total disappointment and it made me truly recheck my line of thinking and most likely avoid the burgers I used to enjoy and expect to be prepared correctly. Sorry and thanks, but no thanks! Been here a few times since moving to the area. The staff has been friendly and cool to my kids. The burgers are good and the fries are solid. Haven't tried the hot dogs yet but I did try the burger with the coney sauce and I feel like they are doing a really solid job with an old school menu. But you can tell the owner has been at it a long time and isn't moving things forward. I'm all for funky places doing things the old school way, but there's the places doing the old thing well and there's the places doing the old school because they're lazy. Roake's is somewhere in the middle. Solid place if you're a local or if you're in the area... but not worth going out of your way for... but it could be. Kind of a divey place, but the prices are bargain for the foods they offer. The bacon ranch burger was alright...though the true star of the menu are the coney fries (my sauce was on the side). The Coney sauce is very well made and is versatile on all the offerings on the menu. Burgers? Fries? Dogs? The sauce works for 'em all. French fries are subjective for most peeps, but I was a big fan. They're greasy, but filled with a flavor that actually convinces me that they actually come from potatoes. I usually don't get feeling/taste when I'm eating fries at other burger joints...the taste is unique (in a good way) and is absolutely fantastic for the price. Hard to complain about that. They definitely put the "whoa" in Roake's when it comes to those delectably greasy fries. Worth a shot for those alone if you're in the area. read more

Skip your McDonald's stop or that jack in the crack. Probably even cheaper than McDonald's anyway but better quality than other fast food place around. The staff is really friendly! They have seating inside and outside. It doesn't get too busy but it's always constant flow of people. They also have beer, McDonald's won't offer you that either. They are known for their hot dogs and burgers. I usually like to get the mushroom burger or the hot dog that has everything on it. They have chili and them milkshakes for the sweet tooth's. Both Coney Island style. Which basically includes a slathering of the chili that makes it classic. The dog is simple but excellent. Featuring a good crunch. The Coney sauce is great. Coney dog is the only thing I like here. Chili cheese anything is super bean heavy, which I don't like as a topper. Topper hot dog chili, IMO, shouldn't have beans. My chili cheese dog was like 90% beans with a little bit of cheese nd onions. I was given a suggestion to visit this place from a friend who used to live in Oregon City so she told me when I come back to Portland, I should drive down and try their Long Coney Island dog. I decided to do so and I'm very glad I did. I think it was a chili con carne over the hot dog and it was delicious. For me, the fries were on the plentiful side but YMMV (your mileage may vary). I don't often venture to Milwaukie, but found myself in the area and in need of some lunch. Driving by, I noticed there was a pretty good sized crowd outside of Roake's. I decided to follow the herd and get my feed on. I ordered a cheeseburger, short coney dog, and regular fry. After a twenty minute wait I heard them call ten of diamonds and was pleased to see that matched the card I was clutching in my left hand. I was less pleased when I started to unwrap the food. I pulled the fries out first and they were a soggy, greasy mass that somehow managed to be both burnt and undercooked at the same time. Next out of the bag was the hot dog. The topping on the coney dog looks like someone ate all of the ingredients, allowed them to digest, and then regurgitated that mess all over my hot dog. It would take real effort to make something look less appetizing. Last, but in this bag of disappointment certainly not least, was the cheeseburger. The burger itself is unremarkable. Not good, not bad. The bun is another story. The bun is dense and dry, and those two qualities make for an odd combination and an unpleasant bite. If you're in the area and see Roake's, keep on driving. You can do better. read more

So I remember coneyislands from when I was a kid and I have been on search for that same taste for many years. I thought it was from another restaurant on this McLoughlin strip that too has been around for many many years. I have been going to that said restaurant and have been disappointed for years thinking the recipe must have been changed as there coney has a sweet relish like sauce on it. YUCK! Now I have driven by Roakes thousands of times and never really thought of stopping in. Today was the day. I went in about 11:30am. The building itself is tiny and if your over six feet tall you would surely have to crouch to get in. There was one patron enjoying hs lunch. The place was neat and clean and has some interesting history to read on the walls if your into that sort of thing. I ordered the Coney Island with the works, fries and a drink. I found a seat and did'nt wait long. The service here is fast an efficient and food is served with a smile. I like that. Now I'm a crunchy fry kind of guy. The fist thing I noticed was soggy soft fries hmmm but oh the taste. They were seasoned beautifully and I found they needed no salt or ketchup they were deliciously perfect. What a nice surprise. Now onto the coney Island. One bite and I knew I had found it! That REALLY REALLY GOOD coney island from my past. The cheesy, spicy, hot sauce was it. If you don't know a good Coney go to Raokes and find out what it is supposed to taste like. YUM YUM YUM! I will definitively be back. read more

So this place has the best food I've ever had in my life the chili is bomb there was a tall black haired woman who I actually enjoy seeing she is very pretty and sweet and she definitely made it nice and warm coming in from the rain. However I struggled because I'm a regular I normally come in the afternoon in between work, but this time I came in the morning I wanted a bowl or cup of chili and she offered me a cup used for fill a katchup with. My experience was with some one new. She was short chubby and had a bulldog dike personality. she had an attitude that I really just wanted to call her out on having an attitude and tell her check herself. I didn't because I figured maybe she was just having one bad day. I will say it left a sour taste in the back of my throat having to deal with her though. I got the foot-long Coney as did my partner and we shared a large order of fries. Starting with the fries they looked like they were fresh cut skin on shoestrings. Unfortunately they were a little limp and oily. They weren't bad but just not good either. The dogs were OK but the Coney sauce was sparse and they were just not as good as I expected. Wow. As I was waiting for my friend to show up I watched the people that were coming up to the window to order. This could have been the setting for a documentary on obesity.
