I grew up just down the road from the Topton Post Office and I can honestly say it is lacking. They…read moreonly have one postmaster and often times the mail is not sorted by 10 am or 11 am. This is not the fault of the postmaster, it is simply understaffing. My parents had two mailboxes at this particular location and anytime I would get magazines or comic books in the mail the would be bent or creased which obviously is not what I was hoping. There are only about 150 mailboxes at this particular Post Office. Many of the locals get mail delivered but it is an extremely remote part of the country. In many of my other Topton/Nantahala reviews I mention that cell phone service is non existent. There are no restaurants or gas stations in Topton either. If you decide to move to this part of the country please be aware of the fact that technology is non existent. It is one of the most beautiful parts of the country but they are a little bit behind the times. When I visit I will have zero cell phone coverage for well over 20 miles. The Post Office is what it is. You cannot expect it to have all the amenities of the newer post offices in progressive areas.

The Cherokee County Rest Stop in Andrews, NC is well worth a stop just to take a little break from…read morethe mountain roads. The parking lot is a good size. The landscaping is well kept. I've not seen a rest stop as nice as this one. The restrooms were clean. The picnic tables are in the shade. Best of all you can either go down to the river or enjoy the views from the porch. It appeared very accessible for those with any mobility issues. There is signage about the Trail of Tears to read as well. Check out this rest stop for the scenery and the history.

TELLIQUAH is a beautiful modern day covered bridge that stretches 230 feet across the Tellico…read moreRiver. It is a Cherokee name that is spelled Tailkwa when properly written and sometimes spelled Telliquo, Tahlequah and Tellico. While the original meaning has been somewhat lost, the word "Talikwa" is thought to be "the open place where the grass grows". The covered structure is approx. 125 feet, but the approaches add an additional 100 feet to the overall length. Completed in June of 2006, this steel and wood bridge sits on a stone-clad arching foundation that makes it very attractive and photogenic. It is actually gated (a covered bridge first for me) because it is a private entrance for the home just across the river, so be respectful and don't block it. We passed it on our way to Bald River Falls and sat eating nearby it @ Iron Works Grille, but I totally forgot to stop and take close up pics when passing it again on our return. Oh well, with the numerous waterfalls in the area, I'm sure I will be back sometime soon for a hike and I'll get better pics then. But if you happen to love covered bridges and find yourself on the 43-mile National Scenic Byway known as Cherohala Skyway (a blended word from Cherokee & Nantahala), its worth stopping. This is a library (go figure.) It's pretty small, but nice and quiet. Plenty of tables for studying…read moreor reading. Has computers, and you can also rent a laptop for an hour which is nice. Free Wifi is definitely a plus. With wifi to listen to music and a big armchair to sit in, all of my needs have been met for a prolonged afternoon of studying. I can't speak for their book/dvd selection as I mainly came here to study, but their seems to be a decent variety.

They do have a 15 minute limit but I think I was inside longer. This office went above and beyond my expectations. I was first shown an area with all the ongoing events then the upcoming events. Then provided brochures to help me find my type of things to do. I was even given a website for more information . They have a section promoting local authors and a gift shop as well. It is small but they have local items and postcards! I was thrilled with what I found. If you ever get to Clay County make sure to stop at this friendly office.
