I felt confused, abandoned, and denied. I saw a celebratory summer filled with all the craft beer and cider my little heart desired (sometimes in slow-mo), and all within walking distance too. Instead it included a one-hour round trip bus ride - with a transfer and not including the return-trip wait time - or a one-hour round trip walk to the other Beer Depot, or tolerating, with a stiff upper lip, the beer selection at our local Price Chopper; and this lasted through early December. We'd been making regular trips to Lane's next door since the fire (Great place by the way! Their staff is professional, in the know about where things are in the store, and happy to point out a good deal whether you ask or not), So it goes without saying we were hopeful when we started seeing signs of reconstruction in the West Side Beer Depot's empty space. When we learned that they'd officially re-opened, I felt like someone had lifted me in the air and twirled me around. It's not an emporium, but the selection is varied enough to never bore you (like Ithaca Coffee Company's), and I'm not just talking about the different breweries and cideries you'll see on the shelves. This is the type of place that'll stock a wider range of products for a given company; so instead of having the choice of two or three products for X brewery/cidery, you'll see, like, four or five products from certain companies. They bring in seasonal and limited edition products too. And they're willing to make space on their shelves for new products like this in-state black current cider we stumbled upon last week. Last but not least, they small talk about their products in a genuine way as if they've tried them, which I appreciate. And they have mainstream beer and premade stuff in a can and all that...but most of them are stocked away from the real deal in another part of the store...where they belong. Appropriate. (They need a separate cash register over there. J/K!) So if you like learning about craft beer and cider, this is definitely an option. They can get their hands on some truly obscure and hard to find beers... even carrying all six of the Trappist beers. One whole wall is devoted to imports including some of my favorite German brews, as well as a large variety of lembic beers from Belgium. Amazingly, they carry kegs and cases of many of these. They even have a selection of specialty and rare brews including special Oktoberfest offerings and Lenten brews. They carry all of the local breweries and they have a nice selection of the smaller breweries nationwide. They do carry the standard american crap... er... favorites... but you have to look for them. This being Binghamton, I am a little shocked to hear that this is a unique store, but friends of mine have come back to the area just to go to Sams. My buddy is bringing his new wife from the Seattle area who just can't imagine such a store existing. I took my brother-in-law from D.C. recently and he practically fell to his knees. If you are local... be thankful for what you have... there are many others less fortunate than you. If you are from out of town. You should stop by.. marvel at the variety... indulge your inner child.
