With the vibe of a fast food place I really didn't expect too much, but gosh I was wrong. I ordered a combo which included a chile relleno, beef taco, refried beans and rice which were all delicious. I'm originally from San Diego. I was so excited to see a Roberto's being built in Temple. When I found out there's already one in Waco we drove straight there. My excitement turned to disappointment! Let me preface this by saying I'm from SoCal. I go to Baylor and my biggest gripe for 4 years has been the subpar and often outright disgusting "Tex-Mex". I took a look at the Roberto's menu (without knowing it was from San Diego) and decided to order a California burrito, as it is the first time I've seen one in Texas! I was very excited, and the second I unwrapped the burrito, I knew. I knew this place was going to be fantastic. The tortilla instantly struck me as the exact same tortilla/recipe that Lupe's Taco Shop in Orange County uses. The first bite and I knew I would be back tomorrow. Stopped by Robert's for a breakfast burrito. My jaw hit the floor when it was delivered to my table. I have never seen such a large burrito. It had to weigh close to a pound. It's larger than 4 Whataburger breakfast burritos and was 8 bucks. It was all I could do to finish it. Very tasty and was served with a red and green set of huge squeeze bottles of hot sauce. Came here for dinner for steak nachos and a chicken burrito and taco plate. The cheese wasn't melted on the nachos, and the chips were too thin to hold anything. Having grown up in San Diego I can 100% confirm that this is the best Mexican food out there. To my Waco friends, this is not the Texmex we get out here. It's just different. We found this place last week and have been back 3 times already. My brother drove up from Georgetown to try their California burrito. It was perfect. We've have the rolled tacos, carne asada French fries, shrimp tacos and quesadillas. The carne asada is perfectly seasoned and tender. There is generous amounts of cheese and guacamole. Had seen all the 5 star ratings here and thought we should give it a try--don't make the same mistake. I should have read the reviews closer because most of the 5 stars are from California transplants feeling a nostalgia/familiarity for home, not for the food. Came on a taco Tuesday--no specials. I had the #1 plate--the cheese enchilada was made with shredded cheese rolled in a tortilla. The cheese wasn't melted and still cold when I got it--the fact that I could tell it was shredded cheese tells you it wasn't cooked properly. The shell for the beef taco was hard but not crispy--like a stale greasy tortilla chip, and the tortilla for the enchilada was greasy. Both items were generally flavorless. Wife had a migas bowl--they serve breakfast all day. Supposedly had 3 eggs but they were scrambled and lost in the sea of refried beans. there's no way that the dish had even 2 eggs. I tasted it and it was also flavorless, and had pieces of tortilla mixed in--which had the same stale consistency that my taco shell had. The rice and beans were also bland and probably prepared in mass quantities off site and reheated. The only highlight was the hot carrots, which were oddly served in a tied with a knot plastic bag. Inside, the tables are surrounded by a strange high wrought iron fence that gives a weird "in jail" vibe--everything is too close and the tables are shoved against the fence. Service was average--not particularly friendly or helpful. Definitely not worth the price (everything is about $10/plate). Fooled by the reviews here--tried it once, but won't be back. So many other better options in Waco for Tex Mex. Would not recommend, but if you want to try, you should go sooner than later because I don't think this will be around very long. read more
