We kept it old school this Mother's Day and dined at Roberto's. While I've known of this restaurant for a while, I had never dined here before tonight. Roberto's is owned by chef Roberto Paciullo, who also owns Zero Otto Nove around the corner on Arthur Ave. While Zero Otto Nove is arguably more well known (he opened two more of them in Manhattan and Armonk), it all started here for Paciullo at his namesake restaurant. Like most restaurants on Arthur Ave, Roberto's is small; upon entry, there's a small foyer containing a bar with an archway that leads into the main dining area. The atmosphere is intimate with low lighting and music playing. The color scheme is warm with dark beiges, browns, and woods. The menu contains slightly elevated Italian cuisine. The bread basket contained a simple Italian loaf and a few slices of focaccia. I totally succumbed to my carb cravings as soon as it hit the table; the bread was so simple yet so amazing - being on Arthur Ave I didn't expect anything less. My app of Italian sausage with cannellini beans and broccoli rabe was super tasty - the flavors paired well and I'm always a sucker for broccoli rabe. For my main I had the pollo con spinaci which was a chicken breast with proscuitto and spinach topped with melted mozzarella in a wine sauce. The entree was fairly simple but it was tasty - the chicken was massive =O. For dessert I had the tiramisu which was good - my cappuccino was slightly bitter but it wasn't a deal breaker. Service was great, everyone was very friendly - I was especially impressed by our server who memorized the massive specials menu to a T. Roberto's is definitely a place to get the real-deal Arthur Ave Italian dining experience and clearly shows why Roberto Paciullo has been so successful in his endeavors. The food was good, as was the service, but I didn't find anything innovative or noteworthy on the menu. This is the fourth Zero Otto Nove restaurant that I have dined in, as well as the original "Roberto's" in little Italy of the Bronx. The meals, while tasty, are the same overcooked (stuck together) pasta in foil, along with a slightly upscale version of "red slop" that you can find in any Italian restaurant. The Osso buco was meh, and the fried calamari was mediocre. Their pizza's are generally good, but they don't serve pizza here in the Tuckahoe restaurant. The impressive wine list and patient wait staff will most likely bring me back here again as it's close to home, but not anytime soon. read more

RECOMMENDED When people talk about "Little Italy", it cracks me up to think that most refer to the treacherous tourist traps just North of Chinatown in Manhattan. Sorry...."Little Italy" is in the Belmont section of the Bronx, specifically, Arthur Avenue and the blocks which surround it. So.....it was my exquisite pleasure to have lunch with seven of my group members at Roberto's on one of the most magnificent sunny Saturdays in 2018.It is virtually impossible to find convenient parking near the restaurant. Save yourself agita and consider using the parking garage of a nearby hospital on Quarry Road to "visit a relative" for several hours. What is notable about Roberto's? I can cite the lovely high ceiling in the sparely decorated dining room which evokes a courtyard in Italy........but, instead, I dig the menu. It is so NOT cookie cutter. You will find creative and authentic regional Italian dishes which you will not find elsewhere. When our group assembled, our attentive and friendly waiter took our orders promptly after reading off a lengthy list of specials which were itemized on a distant blackboard. I started with a nice Grey Goose Vodka Martini to accompany my app, Cotechino con Fagioli e Broccoli di Rapa. In English, it was Sliced Sausage with White Beans. It was merely OK because it arrived cold.I followed up with the Fusilli in Cartoccio (Mixed Shellfish with Fusilli cooked in Foil). It was good, not great. My order of Escarole never arrived but our waiter took it off our bill immediately. I'm basing my review upon both "intangibles" and how much my fellow diners enjoyed this restaurant. Dishes they liked included the Berkshire Pork Chop, Mozzarella alla Caprese, Parmigiana di Melanzane e Zucchine (Eggplant/Zucchini Stack Parm)and Tubettini Con Polipo e Fave. Our group opted to skip dessert in favor of a trip to Delillo for some amazing Cannolis and Gelato. BOTTOM LINE: Although Zero Otto Nove (Roberto's' sister restaurant) will be my destination when I return to Arthur Avenue, I will certainly return to this creative, authentic and "non-cookie cutter" Italian restaurant. read more

Wow this place is fantastic! We had the tomahawk steak served appetizer style best flavored steak I have ever had. I had the pasta special with tomatoes, fresh basil, and mozzarella it was so good and a huge portion had it for lunch the next day. My fiancé had the bucatini with artichokes delicious. Another lunch at Roberto"s. Same limited menu... this time, no fish on the regular menu...but Branzino added to the specials. I had it. Very good but very small. Also split the pasta with Black Truffle fettuccine as an appitizer. 2 portions were over $40. Very good but way over priced. Add a few glasses of wine and you are at $100 pp for lunch! If you can manage to get out of the city, I highly recommend this place for Italian. It's right in Little Italy, and they have the best chicken parm and eggplant parm in all of New York, especially on a cold winter evening!! Food is amazing, wine selection is top notch, and service is impeccable. Amazing attention to detail - waiters divide your food and serve you also! I used to be a Manhattan culinary snob and would only want to eat in the city - this place beats Cipriani, solo pasta bar, raoul's, etc. out of the park. Went here for dinner post Bronx Zoo afternoon. Although we didn't have a reservation, the were able to accomodate us at a 2 top outside. The wait staff were attentive and professional. I had the fusilli with seafood. My wife had the orrechieti with roasted cauliflower and pancetta. The orrechieti was perfectly prepared and the seafood was fresh. Located in the heart of the real Little Italy is this fantastic restaurant. My wife and I live out in the suburbs but drive into the Bronx at least once a year to eat at Roberto's. The food is delicious especially their pasta dishes. We recommend doing an appetizer, splitting a pasta dish, and then each get a dinner. It's a lot but if you're going to go you should try it all. The servers are friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. It's also not overpriced like some other restaurants in the area. read more

Let's start with two facts: 1. Roberto can elevate cannellini or fava beans in a dish to make everything look and feel special. 2. the quality of the ingredients is the best you can find. Yes, the menu offers the caprese, parmigiana, Milanese, and risotto that Italian food fans expect. But you will not find penne alla vodka or eggplant rollatini here. Roberto's menu is full of wonderful surprises diners may not be expecting - and should try, or at least, trust Roberto. Risotto con Melone, a creamy rice base enhanced with grilled melon, or Bucatini "Modo Mio" (my way) with a zucchini sauce that conjures the idea it was created by Roberto (or perhaps his mom or grandma) Radiatore in Cartoccio - in fact any of the cartoccio pastas - beautifully adorned and cooked in foil. Watch the daily board for specials because here that means he snagged a limited amount of something good and built a dish for it. Yes, an average price of $25/dish is robust for a plate of pasta, but if everything from the quality of the pasta or risotto itself all the way up through the ingredients is well thought out, shows care and attention to detail, that is what you pay for. With duck, rabbit, oxtail and fresh truffle on the list, you know the chef is thoughtfully combining flavors and is excited to deliver them to you. Prices are not cheap, but portions are generous and twice the size of those you would get in a restaurant in Rome. 15 years ago they didn't take reservations; celebrities would wait on Crescent Ave to get a table and meet the chef, who is often there. Please don't compare Roberto to your local "red sauce" Italian - I challenge anyone to find a translation error on the menu. The food at Roberto's is by far the best Italian food in Bronx's Little Italy. No wonder it is always so hard to get a table. After spending these past four years living in the area, I make this claim with confidence, and I can say that Roberto's is by far one of my favorite Italian restaurants. While on a special date with the woman I love, I was honestly shocked by how amazing the food was. The lamb she had practically fell off the bone. The ribeye I ordered was not only cooked to perfection, but was also paired with the most delicious sauce I may have ever had. Half was through the main course we asked for more bread to help us practically lick our plates clean. The food simple cannot be beat, and I am sure whatever you order will make you feel the same way. The only small caveat that keeps this restaurant from the 5-star review it likely deserves are the prices. The food was worth every penny, but when it comes to drinks, they quite frankly rip you off. After taking a look at he wine list, nothing is priced below $48. When attempting to order a bottle I know was good, they informed me it was out of stock so the waiter recommended the house cabernet. When it came to the table I was very happy as it was one of me and my girlfriend's favorite budget wines($10/bottle retail). When I received the check they charged a whopping $48 for it. I was expecting a decent markup, but to me, close to 500% seemed far too unreasonable. Nevertheless, I highly recommend Roberto's for some of the best food you will ever eat. I think i hyped this place up to be better than it was. It was mediocre food and subpar service-for example the hosts told us from the start we're not allowed to keep our coats cuz there's no room in the dining room and the waiters will keep bumping into us...one, there was plenty of room behind me and two, the waiters never bumped into us once, they simply walked around the table but whatever, no big deal. I had a cosmo to drink which came in a frosted glass-nice addition and great tasting. We got a couple of cold antipasto for the table-kinda skimpy. I specifically asked if the radiatore in cortoccio was in a sauce and I was told yes, however, it came with no sauce and I was very disappointed about that because I was debating between that and a dish that came with sauce and eggplant but that's my usual go to dish in an Italian restaurant so I wanted something different. It was okay tasting. The prices were reasonable for a restaurant in the Bronx but the portions are very small. I don't live in the area tho so I won't be rushing back here anytime soon. read more

Not sure where to start with this review. First, we are being generous with the 3 stars, but will give the place the benefit. It's doesn't offer most typical Italian fare, which is nice to find a place that can offer more unique dishes. That being said, the dishes they did offer fell short for us. I had the chicken picante. It was a piece of chicken in delicious wine sauce with some chopped peppers on top. That was it. No side of potatoes, veggies, pasta, just the chicken. It was a perfect dish for a low carb diet, if you were on one at the time you ate at this spot, which I was not. Aside from the blah meals, the place was much pricier than we would have expected. Too many other phenomenal spots in the area for us to return. We did like their sister spot, a LOT, and was hoping for a similar experience here. read more

If I could give Roberto 6 I would do it. So I have been there many times (though not in the past year). That said, about 10 years ago we held my mother's 80th Birthday there. It was in their private room downstairs. 15 people or so. That said, I got Roberto on the phone. I thought we were going to discuss menus. He said to me, signor, what part of Italy is your mom from? I said, Naples. That was the end of the conversation. Everything from Rabbit to Octopus came out and of course the pasta in aluminum foil which had porcini mushrooms and lobster. It was incredible. Every once in a while they run specials. There are no reservations, but see when they have the seafood risotto. It is sublime. Definitely worth the trip to Arthur Avenue. read more

I wanted to be in love with this place, and I can honestly say that I was in love with the appetizer I had here in late November. Unfortunately, the entrees are what brought this overall experience down. The antipasti was amazing! And dessert was pretty finger-licking good, as well, but the heart and soul of both mine and my friend's lunches were mediocre at best. We'll start with THE GOOD: 1. Short rib antipasto special-- thin slices of marinated short ribs served with roasted red peppers, aged parmesan on a bed of arugula! My friend and I ordered one to share...and then we ordered another one immediately thereafter! This was incredible, melt-in-your-mouth, flavor-popping, show-stopping goodness. Had I known that the entree would be so far behind in quality and taste, I would have ordered 10 of these and nothing else. 2. Chocolate lava cake-- pretty decent souffle, but lacking in the lava department. Don't promise me hot, melty chocolatey insides if you're gonna half-ass it. And they could've given me a dollop of whipped cream, or vanilla bean something. Overall, a good chocolate dessert. 3. My friend's strawberry tart-- This dessert was perfection. Light, berryful, super delicious thin biscuits layered with pastry cream and fresh strawberries. We could've had seconds on this, also. Moving on to the shitty parts: 1. Pollo alla caprese-- Come on, guys. It was just a breaded chicken cutlet with a chopped caprese for a topping. Normally, I love this simplicity, but the chicken left something to be desired and that something is seasoning! Then the cheese in my caprese was scarce and the dish itself was just not what I had in mind. 2. My friend's grilled salmon served with a whole mess of caramelized onions and broccoli rabe. The broccoli rabe was decent enough but the onions tasted like they were swimming in Roberto's play on barbecue sauce. The salmon itself was dry and overcooked and I hate that in a fish. I won't go on. There were great parts of the meal and ones I wish I'd skipped. Bill total of $116 or something and the larger chunks of that were on entrees we neither enjoyed nor finished. read more

I went to Roberto's today for brunch with my family around 12:30 on a Saturday, after wandering around Arthur ave. The ambiance is very nice. On the smaller side and very comfortable, with thick rustic wooden tables. The service was absolutely fantastic. The waiter was quite knowledge, and easily rattled off the 8-10 daily specials and answered questions. Water glasses were filled promptly throughout the meal. The bread basket came out with warm and delicious focaccia with cherry tomatoes baked in, as well as regular slices of fresh white bread. For a starter, we shared the broccoli rabe and mozzarella cappresse. Both were excellent. The mozzarella was fresh and flavorful. For entree, I had the pollo con spinaci, a very large piece of chicken with melted mozzarella, spinach, and prosciutto on top. It was quite good, but I couldn't finish the whole thing. Overall, very nice ambiance, incredible service, and above average Italian food made this an excellent dining experience. I look forward to trying his other restaurants! read more

Wow! Although I went to Fordham in the Bronx, I never had the occasion to visit Roberto's until my husband and I took a week off to relax and try places we've never been to. This was the highlight of our vacation by far. As others have said, Roberto's doesn't take reservations, but we went on a weekday for lunch at around 1:00 p.m. Even so, there was a healthy crowd of locals and power-lunchers (and one old Italian guy nursing a bottle of wine all by himself). Although everything looked tasty, we asked our waiter to let the chef make whatever he wanted so we could experience a traditional, multi-course Italian meal (our only limitation was no seafood, because the hubby doesn't like it). The food: To start: Fantastic bread, accompanied by Roberto's homemade olive oil Antipasti: Grilled artichoke, asparagus, eggplant and mushrooms topped with truffle oil and fresh melted cheese (let it be known that my husband doesn't normally like any of the ingredients listed above, but said it was one of the best appetizers he's ever had) Pasta: Some kind of amazing twirly noodle with cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and delicious pesto sauce Entree: Beer-battered rib eye steak topped with peppers Dessert: Chocolate lava cake -- I had to take a pic. of the description, which reads, "Warm chocolate cake exterior bellies a creamy, melted chocolate core ready to explode" -- need I say more? We also enjoyed wine and the perfect attentive service of our waiter. At the end of our meal, we found out that Roberto himself made our food and he came upstairs to say hello and personally thank us for stopping by. He's got an old-world charm and many stories about food and family from his Salerno, Italy upbringing. Now, I've never been to Babbo, but I heard one of the guys behind us saying that the food, service and ambiance at Roberto's "blew it away" -- quite a claim, and while I can't substantiate it, I can say this was easily the best lunch we've ever had. If only I had two hours and $100 (our total bill, which was really quite reasonable, including four glasses of wine) to waste away on lunch everyday. Wow this place fills up fast. They opened at 4pm and by 415pm there was a line out the door. Glad we showed up early. Roberto's has a huge menu with tons of classic Italian dishes, and they add in like 12 specials to the mix, which the poor waiter has to read to you off a board. Once we let him off the hook, we decided to go with 2 apps 2 entrees for our meal. I got the Scamorza Affumicata which is smoked mozzarella, half melted over spinach with black olives and roasted peppers. I also got the veal scallopini with roasted mortadella, red peppers, and provolone. The Mrs. got the Northern Italian sausage, cannellini beans, and sautéed broccoli rabe as her app, and for the entree she went with the swirly Radiatori pasta which came with baked cherry tomatoes, porcini mushrooms, and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Her pasta was actually cooked in foil over the grill and was served that way as well. When it comes out it looks like Jiffy Pop...pretty neat. I have to say, the food was dynamite. From the first bites of the smoked mozzarella and hand crafted sausage, to the last taste of the veal, I was really quite impressed with just how good this place was. I can't say it's the best Italian place I've ever been to, but it's definitely up there with the best. Service was also very good, though there were a few (very slight) communication issues. Price-wise, the tab here is a lulu. Like I mentioned, we got 2 apps, 2 entrees, and we also added dessert and coffee. All of it came to $120 with tip. That's a ton for dinner for 2, especially in the Bronx! Regardless though, I would definitely go back again and I encourage everyone to check out Roberto's. Oct 2018 - came here after our visit to the New York Botanical Gardens and what a great place to dine after a day of walking around at the garden. This restaurant is one of the top restaurants, and a must try if ever in the Arthur Ave section in the Bronx. However, parking can be a challenge, you need to search for metered parking that is no fun. The restaurant has plenty of seating with a small bar area that you can sit and eat if you like. The lighting inside is a little too dark, maybe a good idea to turn it up a notch so you can see the menu, I needed to use my flashlight to see the menu :( The staff are friendly and service is outstanding. I ordered the Vitelli con Patate e Porcini - veal served with thinly sliced potatoes and porcini mushrooms, this dish was delicious and cook to perfection. My friend ordered the Penne Melanzane Provola Affumicata - penne pasta with marinated eggplant and smoked mozzarella that was also delicious, cooked to perfection. The prices for dinner average $21 - $40; all and all this restaurant is a must try when in the Bronx. read more

Perfection! I love Arthur Ave and finally are at Roberto's after several years of coming here. A bit of a wait but the bartender provided a basket of delicious Arthur Ave bread along with our drinks. We were offered a seat downstairs but chose to wait for an available table upstairs ( a bit claustrophobic for me). Once seated, our waiter was very attentive, reviews all the specials ( many) and the bread was plentiful. We chose several dishes for the four of us to share and it made the dinner even more memorable as we got to taste several dishes. Burratta over arugula with large capers - omg this is the creamiest most delicious thing you can put in your mouth! Ravioli with fig and Gorgonzola Lamb Ragu risotto Squid ink orrchetia pasta with scallop, shrimp and crab - amazing! The Arthur Avenue Belmont section of the Bronx is a busy, teaming area full of authentic bakeries, restaurants and markets very unlike the downtown tourist version. If you're ever in the Bronx, make your way over and enjoy this stretch of the community. It was Standing Room Only at the front bar while waiting for a table Saturday night. We knew Roberto's doesn't take reservations and were prepared to enjoy a few cocktails. We were there so long, we made a few friends during the wait to be seated. People get pretty friendly after a few cocktails on an empty stomach. Once seated we decided against an appetizer and both went with the lamb shank and truffle risotto. The lamb was succulent, sweet and tender, the truffle risotto, rich and creamy. The wine choice of a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino was spendy but worth it, full bodied and flavorful. Fresh cannoli for dessert followed by a stroll through town and making plans for a return visit with the zoo opens for the season. read more

Then tried the tubettini with Pulpo and fave bean that was very tasty, sauce was full of flavor and the octopus was fresh and tender. Honestly Arthur ave is much better than Mullberry street, this place has real Italians living in the area. Food, shopping neighborhood much better. This is an excellent restaurant. The food was delightful. It seemed Tuscan to me. Some of the dishes reflected thoughtful creativity. The dining room was lovely. Me and the GF shared an insalata boccacino. She had a swordfish special and I had a spicy chicken-on-the-bone special. We shared profiteroles for dessert. We brought home a little bit of each that made for another dinner. With a bottle of red ($48), we spent about $131 before tip. Roberto's is one of the best Italian restaurants in the Arthur Ave area. I've been to Michaelangelo's, Zero Otto Nove, Mario's, and Antonio's multiple times each. You can't go wrong with any of those, but the best dish I've ever had in Little Italy is Roberto's Penne con Piselli e Guanciale ($24, penne with peas and bacon). It might be the best pasta dish I've ever had period! Roberto's menu is traditional Italian so it's split into pasta and meat dishes. You're not pressured to get both courses at all, and one is probably fine for most people. But note that if you order a meat dish, you're just getting a piece of meat and that's it. No pasta or any sides. I usually get a pasta dish and then split something from the Secondi Piatti menu like the Cotoletta di Pollo alla Caprese ($21, breaded chicken topped with tomatoes and salad). Roberto's is one of the more expensive options in the area so I like to save it for special occasions. But the service and food are both top notch and I've never left wishing we had went somewhere else. read more

Everyone has their favorite Arthur Ave. spot, and this is mine. I will defend this place to the death of me against any of Belmont's competitors. I order the same thing every time: the penne with peas and pork cheek. The pasta is so noticeably fresh, and it is truly one of the best dishes I've ever had at any restaurant anywhere. The staff here are attentive and the restaurant itself is clean and pleasant for groups. What a treat it is to dine at Roberto's. I took my son here for a dreary Saturday afternoon treat after shopping earlier. We ordered the Penne con Piselli e Guancaile and the Radiatore in Cartoccio and we started with the Cotechino con Fagioli e Broccoli di Rapa. The Cotechino has been a staple for me here and I love how simple yet delicious it can be. The constant gripe I have with it is how they can charge $12 for 4 thin slices of northern Italian sausage with beans and broccoli rabe. Yes it's delicious and obviously I keep ordering it but either boost the size or cut the price. Our pastas were delicious. Personally, I liked my Radiatore much better than my sons Penne but that has more to do with me not liking peas and the penne had an abundance of them. My Radiatore was phenomenal. I was worried about the pasta being mushy and overly cooked given is cooked in foil over the grill. However it was really wonderful. I loved the Radiatore shape and size and the texture was perfect. My only complaint is that the amount of porcini was quite scant but the flavors married perfectly. Roberto's is consistently the best place in the area and worthy of the praise it receives. read more
