The school has a flexible after-hour program where you pay a modest rate for extra hours after the regular morning session. Our daughter did the Pre-K program at University Heights and then went directly into the local public kindergarten, so we didn't get to stay there very long (they have pre-K and a kindergarten program). The quality of the instruction is high. They employ the "explode the code" system for pre-readers which we thought prepared our daughter well. The campus is small / modest and a tiny bit run down but that is not relevant to the kids. Our daughter loved UH and we did too. It's expensive but in this case you get what you pay for.

The Center for Clinical Sciences Research (CCSR) is part of the large Medical School campus at…read moreStanford. Completed in 2001 the center was designed by renowned British architect, Sir Norman Foster. Foster has numerous noteworthy building including the Apple Spaceship Campus. The over 125,000 sq foot complex houses labs, research areas and the anatomy department. The design of the building is interesting. It has two parallel rows that are interlinked in the sub floors as well as numerous elevated walkways between the two. The inner area is covered with a decorative lattice of bars as well as some of the sides. The bars are why most of us simply refer to the building as "The Birdcage". While access to the building is limited to students and faculty, the exterior is fun to look at and there is a deli and an art installation located within the buildings footprint. This is much better part of a walking art / architecture tour than a destination in and of itself.

The facilities were perfect for a conference of this size on this topic. Talks were given on a stage in a large lecture-hall styled room. I presented my work on Carbon Monoxide at high pressures and temperatures in one of the poster sessions. Posterboards where we mounted our posters were placed in the the hallway side-by-side making it easy to walk poster-to-poster and ask questions to presenters. Breakfast offerings were provided in the morning and coffee throughout the day. We got some conference swag, and tours of the facilities were offered for those who wanted to partake. The cafeteria had a selection of lunch offerings so we could stay on-site for lunch if we wanted. There are also a number of restaurants near-by if you have time and want to go out for lunch.

The worst core at Stanford - which is pretty bad considering all the cores are awful. Our lab pays…read morethousands of dollars a year for access to software that is often 10+ years old or is incompatible with anything that is older than Windows 95. There are 4 people who work here but I don't know what they do. One person's job I know is to maintain the online chats and repeated say "I don't know" or "We're working on that" or "Let me get back to you" or "Please wait for someone else to respond to you". Examples: - Lee Kozar does not actually work there. He is frequently "working from home" (we all know what that means aka not working). I know this because I have repeated requested software discs and they are locked up in his office. So eventually I gave up. My friend made an appointment with him and he had an emergency, but never followed up. - They believe their job description is going to the gym. Maybe CMGM stands for Core Muscle Gym Management. In the middle of troubleshooting software, Alan Hebert told my friend that he had to go to the gym (in the middle of the afternoon). Of course, there was no follow up with his issue. In summary, CMGM exists to discourage you from getting software working. They are amazing at delaying, not working, and not troubleshooting. They still exist, because we have no other alternatives and if they knew how to do their jobs they would be working at Google or Facebook.

After attending Las Lomitas for kindergarten through 3rd grade, I moved up to La Entrada for 4th…read morethrough 8th grades with my classmates. All 9 years at these schools were a private-school-like-public school experience. The teachers were (and continue to be!) unbelievable, the campus is gorgeous, the students enjoy fabulous resources, and the student and parent population is amazing. At La Entrada, there are also some great, unique opportunities. I participated in Peer Helpers which was a group that counseled and peer-mediated other students. We learned tons about counseling during lunch meetings with our school counselor. I also participated in our handbell choir, a great musical activity for people not-so-musically-inclined! Wood shop and ceramics were great elective classes too! The school was super sheltered from the "real world" which was comforting but did not fully prepare me for my big public high school, Menlo-Atherton. At least I was prepared academically! I am still in touch with some of my K-8th classmates which I think is pretty amazing since I graduated from college a few years ago... Sometimes I wish I could re-live my La Entrada days!
