I was going to a Christmas Party and wanted to get a hot towel shave a few hours before the party. I pass by this place daily, I swung into the lot and took a chance. I looked at the board and saw Rockabilly Barbers offers a hot towel shave. I was asked if I had an appointment, I did not but they were able to squeeze me in. What I didn't expect was the extra treatment. The barber shaved the back of my neck and trimmed around my ears. Very nice touch. My shave was great, the barber put different lotions on my face and with the hot towel, it made me like Benjamin Buttons. Haha, just funnin'. Great shave, My new favorite spot. read more

This place cuts your hair as fast as possible and that's not a good thing. I've been to this place quite a few times to make sure the poor quality haircut wasn't a one time thing, but unfortunately you're better off with a cut in the city. It's a lot cheaper and you feel better tipping. If you ever get the bald guy, he seems stoic and like he really knows his thing, but in reality he treats your hair like a rush job with no regard for detail at all. Didn't realize at the time, but he didn't show the back of my hair when done and it was because he messed it up. The vibe of this barbershop is pleasant, but you can tell they cater to locals and regulars more while newcomers are neglected and treated like a quick buck. Overall, it's a hit or miss. Haircut and great tunes... Wow - I got turned on to this place by a friend and have to say- great job. I'm really picky about my hair, particularly since there is less of it to play around with these days. Vinny was the guy who took care of me and he did a great job. The location is set up with 4 seats - 2 each back to back and the place was hopping when I got there. The inside is interesting - lots of eclectic memorabilia on the walls and some great tunes playing. They use rolling tool boxes for their barber equipment- a nice change from the standard setup everywhere else. All in all a great experience and not too hard on the wallet. Wow, went to this place cuz they state they can cut long hair and have been there twice before with satisfactory results. However, went there about 6 months back and was handed over to this woman who when queried likewise informed me that yes she can cut long hair with the result being she couldn't even cut a straight line when trimming the back. Fast forward 6 months and as I'm sitting there waiting and wondering if this was the same woman I was informed that yes she was and remembered cutting it and when I stated I'm not comfortable with you cutting my hair I was gonna be handed off to a different barber; I walked out sans haircut more disturbed that she still worked there than anything else....oh well, so much for this joint; wtf? I've never been to a barbershop where I have to pray I get a DECENT barber or risk going home with a ruined head. The barbers I would trust if you do come here are Nick, Blaine, Rick?, and Vinny. They are phenomenal and treat your head like a canvas and sculpt it how you want. They also know how to adapt to different hair and make it look good. Nick is there regularly so ask for him. Anyone else and you are treading murky waters. There is one female barber who works there who is SO BAD at cutting hair, I don't know how she even got the job. I've had the bad luck of having her cut my hair twice and BOTH times, I walked out with a frown. The second time, she completely misinterpreted my instructions and just barbarically mowed off half my head like she was skinning an animal. By that point nothing could be done to reverse it and I just endured the rest of the cut and went home looking nothing like I wanted to. It wasn't just the fact that she did the haircut completely wrong, it was more that she didn't look like she gave a F how the cut would turn out. She was in her own little world, pausing every 2 minutes to step back and giggle at some random inside joke (or at my horrible haircut) and then resume mowing my head like she was skinning a rabbit. The complete opposite of Nick for example who pays close attention and actually LISTENS to your instructions to make sure you end up looking good. I'm staying away from here even though I will miss the haircuts from the actual barbers who work here. read more

This place only rushes to get the job done as soon as possible with little concern for quality. This is the first time I've gotten a straight razor shave. I got my whole head and face done. I've honestly done much better/gotten closer shaves with my Gillette razor on my head (there is even a hairy patch) and my neck has the worst razor burn I have ever gotten in my life. Normally I wouldn't complain but the guy doing it just tried to hide the fact that I was bleeding by dabbing paper on my face about 30x before he said he was finished and just hoped I wouldn't notice. When I did notice and looked in the mirror after we were done because my face felt like it was on fire, all he pretty much said was "I didn't cut you" and tried to blame it on my pores. There was no concern for me or an apology or even a suggestion on what to do to fix this to make it better. I had to ask him what should I do and all he did was offer me a product to buy from him. I stopped getting hair cuts from this place years ago and thought to give it another try with a different service, big mistake. This is definitely the last time I go there. They, however, gave me a full refund, no questions asked, when I called after making this post. read more

I don't know if this was because I am a walk in and do not schedule an appointment, but it can be a bit annoying. Other than that they do a decent job, nothing great and nothing bad. I just decided to come here as a walk-in since I was long overdue for a haircut. I have a fairly long Asian hairstyle so it probably wasn't something they were used to getting. Anyway, I got Stefan and I was very impressed by the level of attentiveness I received. Normally I picture barbers to be pretty quick with the comb and scissors, which personally makes me slightly uneasy, so I was very pleased to see that he didn't take it very fast and seemed to really take his time to make sure everything was right. Went here a couple of times before. Not the best haircut, but fast which is fine by me. I'm really not picky about my hair. Came back a few months later around mid day when it was quiet and just asked for a simple haircut. Might have been the worst haircut I've ever gotten. Front was crooked, almost to a 45 degree angle. She could not have done the edges any faster, or with less care. Basically jabbed at my head from a few inches hoping to hit the right spot. Side burns wound up uneven and dug in to the back of my neck nice and hard. On top, there really was no method to cutting. Just randomly used her fingers to measure some spots and the comb at others and a buzzer at others. Like I said, it was not busy and I am not one to complain about my hair, but this was pretty poor all around. Hopefully it was just a one time thing, but I will not be finding out. read more

I've been here twice and both times have been excellent- and it actually got better in the 2nd time. The place is clean and the lighting lets you get a good look at what's happening to your hair. They play some good songs too. I had brought a photo of the hairstyle I wanted and Vinny did a great job. He's not averse to explaining the choices he gives me and is open to friendly chat while he's cutting. He doesn't rush the job either and is quite patient to be gentle if certain hair scalps hurt. I only wish they had a back mirror so that I could see the back of my head as well as the front. He does hold a mirror for that after finishing the haircut though. At $15 (excluding tips) it's quite reasonable considering the rates charged in Stony Brook. read more

This place is honestly a hit or miss depending on who cuts your hair. My first visit was a pleasant one, the barber held a conversation with me and took her time cutting my hair. She listened to exactly what I wanted and made adjustments and asked if it was to my liking. The first experience was pretty comfortable, and, despite hearing others tell me that the barbershop was not that great, I decided to go again. BIG MISTAKE. This time at the barbershop, a younger lady (Ayesha I believe) cut my hair, and it was probably the worst experience I've ever had at any barbershop. I asked her for a 1-3 fade on the sides and 1 inch taken off the front and 1/2 taken off the back. I'm not sure if she wasn't listening to me and had another agenda in mind or just didn't care at all and was too busy talking to the owner. She rushed through it, using clippers and a comb instead of scissors to cut the top of my head, she didn't ever pause to ask or to clarify what kind of haircut I wanted. My biggest concern with this place is why hire someone who doesn't know how to cut hair. With the damage already done to the top of my head, which now has hair that stands up higher in the back that in the front, I asked her to do the sideburns, thinking that the top would grow out and I'd just wear a hat to cover it. BUT NO, she said "sorry I don't know how to do that sides, I'm not good at it". In addition, when she was doing the back, near my neck line, I asked if she could make it blocked or tapered, instead she buzzed an M or a rat tail saying that I had a COWLICK on my neck... What??! I'm willing to give this place one last try before I move onto a different barbershop but this seriously ruined my hopes to find a barbershop that's close-by to Stony Brook University that would become my go-to. At the time I went it wasn't busy at all so there was no reason to rush through my cut. In addition saying, "It's because you haven't had a haircut in a while so it seems short, you'll like it with the gel in" is not a valid excuse to try and justify messing up someone's hair. Just because I hadn't gotten a cut in a month doesn't mean I don't know what a proper haircut looks or feels like. read more

Great decor, full of testosterone 5. Always great music playing, or the game of the week to watch. 6. Reasonable prices. I've been going there for years and I never leave disappointed. The atmosphere is perfect. The whole experience is so downright pleasurable. When I bring my son, we usually go next door to eat at the Green Cactus Grill afterwards. Overall a good place there is one guy there that has an attitude and it's not the 1st time. My side burns weren't even I ask him to fix them he said they are to the same point on my ears. he maybe right from a barber stand point but from anyone looking at me head on they won't think that. I have been going to Rockabilly's for quite some time. Nick cuts my hair and is ALWAYS personable, friendly and gives awesome cuts! He always asks "how did it go last time" or "what would you like to do this time"? Never takes it for granted and just starts buzzing, it's like a consultation every time which is rare in a barber shop. I always get compliments on my cut and recommend Nick to everyone. Although he is the only one who has cut it I would feel totally comfortable in anyone's chair there! I have watched the other staff members cut and always see great cuts leaving there! Because of the lack of barbershops around the area, Rockabilly Barbers is a fair and convenient place for Stony Brook University students and local families. I am very particular with my haircuts, but very simple. At first, the haircut was acceptable. Like other reviews, I felt rushed, but the barbers' personalities made up for the experience. However, the haircuts and experiences decreased in quality. My sides were often rushed and left with stray long hairs, the line around my ears were neglected, and the top was uneven. The only barber who has demonstrated consistency and quality is Nick. So, if you are looking for a convenient haircut I'd recommend Rockabilly Barbers... but just toss caution to the wind. read more

I wanted to shorten my ponytail and sadly the one female hairdresser here didn't quite do a good job. Instead of shortening the back and leaving the front longer (when you put your hair up in a ponytail, you need longer hair from the front because it has to wrap around to the back of your head), she trimmed everywhere to the same length. Now, not only my ponytail is still too long, the front is ironically too short to reach the hairband in the back. I thought I could just let down my hair and wait until it grow back out but her cut was straight through, it looks so unnatural. Perhaps if you have short hair, this place might have something to offer. With longer hair, you may want to take your chances elsewhere. And it's cash only so it's another hassle I had to deal with. But on the brighter side of things, my relationship with hats (at least for the next couple of weeks) is going to be very tight and meaningful. read more

In the nature of full disclosure, I am going to reveal that I actually told the owner of this Rockabilly Barber shop that I was going to "yelp" them. He didn't have a problem with it. I have not done "prior notice yelpings", but to be truthful, I am not going to write anything different than I would have written. So, there you go. The review: If you are like me when it comes to getting your hair cut, when you find a good barber or stylist or hair cutter or whatever cutter, you stick with them. I have friends that used to take trains and drive an hour or more to reach their hair cutter person because "they know how to cut my hair." Honestly, who knows? Only you. And honestly, Blaine "knows how to cut my hair." I found this barber when he was one of the managers at the original Northport shop. He opened his own shop in Stony Brook and I just kept traveling to my appointments there. It isn't too far, and I can get some shopping done for entertainment and to save the big gas bucks with a combo trip. Oh, the hair. Yeah. Well, Blaine knows what he is doing. I call him the Jeet Kune Do of hair cutters. He can do it all, even though he may choose to focus on the barber style stuff. Really. Over the years in his shop, he told the story of his hairy life. His mother had a shop, he learned hair early, trained in classic schooling, and barbering. He has all the certificates and the hands. Hair is in his blood. The shop is wild. It is like a mix of the classic barber shop where you talk about things and the modern. Cutting hair with an edge. The music is cool. He has fun stuff on the walls, good magazines, location is awesome. Food places all around the little strip mall. Parking OK. The people there are nice and it is apparent that Blaine sets the tone and it all rolls the way he wants it. He picked great people with cool attitudes, which means, no attitudes. None that I can see. That makes a difference. So, like I noted, I follow the usual "he knows how to cut my hair" philosophy, I have only had Blaine cut my hair. I don't know how anyone else does. But, taking the extrapolation further- great hair cutter, great manager, cool shop, cool person, good attitudes... I don't think Blaine would put up with anything sub- par or crappy. Blaine is a cool guy, and friendly, but it is very clear that he is a professional and he does not countenance mediocre service. Side note: I read somewhere that some people sour on their barbers because as people age, you have hair changes, greying, widow's peaks, thinning, etc. and that changes the way you get your hair cut. I joke with Blaine about this and he has performed mini consultations to plan how to work with these defects of nature which have come to my own scalp. That helps out a lot. Saves me some psychiatric visits. I have come to realize that the changes of my hair is not part of a nefarious plot from an alien life form aiming to implant some device inside my head through the changing landscape of my hair and scalp. What a great follicular epiphany. I have seen many clients come in and come back and have their hair cuts performed by other employees. None have complained that I have seen. They seem darn happy. Though I have Blaine cut my hair, I actually may have someone else cut my hair someday. They also may "know how to cut my hair." Let me know. read more

I patiently grew out my hair for a year. I found Rockabilly Barbers, Stony Brook online and figured they would know what to do with the length of my hair and clean up the sides without hacking off the length. I WAS WRONG! The bald guy who did my hair, cut off 9 months of my hair and totally demolished it. It looks terrible. It's by far the worst haircut I ever received. I have cowlicks everywhere (I even told him not to go short because of this reason) and now I have to wait again to re-grow my hair. It angers me to no end. Good news is, I have a lot of friends and they all know never to go to this place...ever. It's unfortunate, because the place looks legit, but turns out not to be Rockabillys but Rockabutcher. I've been to this place 3 times, and I just gave up. the last visit this guy with tattoo did my haircut. he comb my hair so violently that he scratched the pimple on my forehand. it started bleeding but he did nothing at all. I wasn't wearing glasses so couldn't see clearly. when I finally found out then he handed me the tissue. before that, he sprayed so so so much water on my head and it started dropping down on my face, yet he didn't say anything, just pretended it's so normal. this was the worst experience ever ever in my life. even the granny back in my hometown knows how to treat customers right and give nice haircut. he just rushed all the way so he could take more customers. the previous two visits? the girl didn't even know what to do and another barber helped her. so what? read more

This was my first time here. I walked in without an appointment and was quickly seated to get my haircut. The barbers were very nice, however, I felt like my haircut was rushed. No one was waiting either so I don't know why. He quickly cut my hair and I was done in five minutes, ten at most. There was no attention to detail and I was upset with how my hair looked afterwards. People have recommended this place to me, so I've been here a couple times. But each time I come here I have a rather shitty experience, but I keep coming back in hopes that I got a bad barber or some other fluke. I do not recommend this place at all. The staff is rude and they don't do a good job at all. I always receive a rather rushed haircut that I'm not at all satisfied with. I asked for a 3 on the sides and half an inch off the top. 3 on the sides was just fine, but the guy barely cut the top, he gives me like a 5-10 minute cut, and proceeds to remove the bib and doesn't bother to ask me if I would like to look at the back or if the haircut was okay. It wasn't okay. I wanted the top much shorter, and I didn't even have any time to tell him what I wanted. Not good service at all. read more
