Enter the Danville Community Center, where a close friend hosted a party for her mother's 90th. This is not the sort of space where food or drink is provided. If you want that you'll arrange for it separately, just as my friend did. She also self-managed a slide show, music, and a couple of group dances. The whole affair was perfect and the spacious, high-ceilinged room (with free on-site parking) was nicer than possibly any community center I've ever been to. While I'd not suggest the Danville Community Center to those who don't live in the East Bay if you do, and you're seeking an event venue, it is quite worth checking it out. Perhaps it might even inspire you to host an event.

The down side... all the garbage cans were overflowing from previous event, there were no accessible restrooms so you have to walk just outside the park on the corner of Eighth x Delaware to a PORTA POTTY that wasn't serviced regularly, urine on the floor, sputum on the floor, empty hand sanitizer or portable hand washing station and more importantly a NON flushing one. Luckily I carry a spray bottle of 91% rubbing alcohol and was able to sanitize my hands. I contemplated driving to the hotel at the Berkeley Marina. There has to be a park ranger that comes around periodically to check for things like this. Apparently not today. The Veterans' Memorial Building is a three story building with rooms for ballroom dancing lessons. My husband and I saw a couple doing the fox trot. It looked fun, but my being such a klutz and having two left feet I probably be stepping on my husband's feet. My husband and I are already members of the Mastick Senior Center, but it was my relative who encouraged us to sign up to be members here. I believe they mentioned that the recruiting new members are done on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also, at the time, it was their renewal period for people who were members. The annual fee is $12 per person and $3 for parking. Check is made payable to City of Oakland. Suggestion: Get there before 10 AM to get a parking space; otherwise, the parking lot will have no available spaces. They have plenty of activities and classes for seniors. There are monthly excursions. The ladies assisting us were pleasant and welcome us to take a tour of the building. The canteen room serves coffee, tea, pastries, etc. It also has two pool tables. The dining hall is spacious. Lunch is $5 per day. The media room (library) is on the third floor. We did not have a chance to visit the computer room. The consignment shop is small compared to the Mastick Senior Center. Most of the items were geared for women (clothes, jewelry, knick knacks, etc.) I look forward to receiving their monthly newsletter via email.

VERY IMPORTANTLY, their website is very adamant that you will not be able to get a refund on a class after 14 days BEFORE the class starts. When you click on a button searching for REFUNDS, that is the message that you get. And most people would give up reading right there. With the most recent class I took, half way through, I couldn't take it anymore, and I called the office asking for a refund anyway. I told him that I knew from the first class that this was not going to work. He said "Oh I wish you'd have told us. We have a quality assurance policy that if after the first class you are unsatisfied, we will try to make it better." Ok, "make it better" does not say "refund". I told him to show me where this "quality assurance" clause was. When I finally found it, I could see that few reasonable people would have found it. It was a paragraph or two below "NO REFUNDS AFTER 14 DAYS BEFORE CLASS STARTS". Before that I was willing to take only half refund. When I say how ludicrous the website and policy was, I demanded a full refund. He refused. I then went through my credit card company and got a full refund. Another student in the class had the same response to the teacher and wanted to transfer to another class, and the administration would not let her. There is something wrong with the administration of this place. I assume it is primarily a profit center, and they cut costs by hiring inexperienced teachers, and play games with the website wording to dissuade you from asking for a refund.

Absolutely every single time I have either picked up my child or dropped him off, the facility is running like a well oiled machine. I trust Brian with my kid. He has excellent communication with parents and his staff. He is very good with the kids, and mine always finishes his homework there. I would not trust most places to pick my child up and drive him to an off site facility. I was a stay at home mom for a bit and watched, horrified, to see how irresponsible many of these off site facility staffers are around the logistics of picking up and driving kids to their facilities. I went to Davis street because they are on site and I did not need to fret about at least that one aspect of my son's care. I soon realized that Davis street is an all around good deal for a family on a budget too. I realize that there are a lot of kids at Davis Street, and that they rely upon donations a lot of the time for their supplies, but it is at least as good and in some cases better than pricier options. Davis Street as an entire organization does a lot of good for our community. I can think of only one other secular, non extra-curricular based child care program around, and it has a long waitlist. Davis Street doesn't force your kid into an extra curricular (I already have mine in two which are near and dear to us, thank you very much!) and doesn't have a religious agenda either. That is rare to find at an affordable price with such stellar over all care The negative reviewer here seems to be thinking of the low cost childcare options available at some underserved/low socioeconomic schools. Long gone are the low cost on site childcare options for all for school aged children. Its sad to see someone leave such a negative review for a place where folks are working very hard for very little. Do your homework before you leave a one star rating at the safest, most affordable childcare option in town. No matter, they are running a wait list themselves because of their stellar reputation despite that ignorant review.

Just a run down, unkempt and overgrown park with some signs that were hard to read because they were dirty, faded, damaged or overgrown. I read all the signs and learned about the tragedy of the Ohlone, Mexican and other peoples. I saw no museum. I was disappointed completely.
