Rocky Point Resort - Halibut 235# - Resorts Near Me - Petersburg, Alaska

We had a fishing experience like no other at Rocky Point this July. We waited almost two years to get onto their schedule and have already booked our trip for next year. If you want to go, book early! We met other guys who have been many times and there's really no rhyme or reason as to when the salmon are running. don't be disappointed if they aren't, but still try for them if you can. Running salmon is the coolest thing if you can catch them. Oher than that you are catching halibut. Those fat, flat fish are always down there. It does matter who your captain and crew mates are. Also, gear matters. But you can spend thousands and if you're not patient you'll come up empty. Fortunately, I have patience in spades (mostly to catch more than the 95% male population) and we felt like we caught enough fish that we'll be eating halibut and salmon for another 6 months. So you're aware; the rules about length limits changes weekly in Alaska. The week before we were there the length was different, shorter. But when we were there if you caught below a 37" halibut it was called a gaff fish and you had to pay $300 for it. The fisheries and trawlers are to blame for the shortage in fish. The resorts and charters are trying to survive. How I can support is lending my business to this amazing family run resort year after year. We came home with enough fish for months and it was our first time so the rules didn't affect us much. The food here was also very good. Some nights we could have used a bit more at our large table of all boys but I feel like if we had asked they would have accommodated. The constant supply of breakfast, lunch and snacks is more than enough to get you thru the day. The deck hands and support crew is friendly and fun. Deer and eagles are everywhere. The town is close by and looked to have everything one would need (liquor store, groceries, MJ, medical clinic) but we had everything we needed for our 5 day trip out at the resort. Rocky Point Resort is a halibut, salmon and dungeoness fisher's paradise. Run by a small family who boasts amazing, all-from-scratch cooking skills from the kids to the grandma, you'll find that visitors to southeast Alaska will get their fix and relax with some of the kindest folks you'll ever meet. What you'll get is the best bang for your buck in comparison to many resorts. You'll get a place to stay, meals and plenty of eat, tackle, rods, boats, free filleting and packaging for your check-in of fish back home. They'll even make runs into town for you if you need some basics. The place - this isn't glamping or some resort where your useless vanity takes a front seat. Save that bit for your Instagram at another place. The cabins have the bare necessities and are best shared between four people. You won't spend a ton of time here if you are out on the water. Getting here - In this situation you'll need to take an Alaska flight from Seattle, which will have some stops in Ketchikan and Wrangler before getting down to the small town of Petersburg. Take the mandated precautions, cover up, and wash up when you get there. The kind folks at the resort will pick you up and drop you off. You will also note that during the pandemic you shouldn't head into town or mingle with others at the resort. Stick to what you came here for: fishing. Boats - Included in the packages are smaller aluminum boats. For an extra fee that can be split with your party you can rent the bigger ones with faster engines, thereby cutting your drive time. I recommend doing this at least once, and when you get the hang of conditions and how to catch halibut. I would also recommend taking a look at the local nature. Bald Eagles are everywhere here, and you can often hear them throughout the day or when boats come back for their share of fish. I also recommend doing unguided trips so you can get your maximum 2 halibut daily limit, so long as you understand navigation, are cautious among changing sea and wind conditions, and know how to manage what's being borrowed. A Great Self-Guided Adventure My buddy and I have been self-guiding at Rocky Point for 5 years. Walt, Mike & family always take care of us and feed us great. The lodge fee includes an aluminum skiff with a 40hp outboard and unlimited gas & bait, and you could fish 18 hours a day if you wanted to--an outdoorsman's dream! On the skiff you can also keep 2 halibut of any size whereas on a charter you can only keep one. Tip #1: bring a buddy. Tip #2: if you don't have small boating experience, before you come take a course like the ones offered by US Power Squadron and get a little practice on a local lake or bay. Tip #3: bring a comfortable flotation vest that you can wear all day. Tip #4: You'll catch fish your first year, but give it 3 years before you expect to limit out. My buddy and I have been fishing for 60 years combined and LEARNING to fish this area has been one of the great joys of our outdoor lives. read more

The location was beautiful, and the fishing was great. The hospitality was a little below what I expected for the price. The cabins were very basic and also very clean. The dinners were exceptional. There was self serve cold cereal (although we could not find milk) and cookies and pastries for breakfast. There were cookies, pastries, candy and sandwiches on thick bread for lunch if you went out fishing. Everything tasted great, but I was on a constant carb high or crash, and there are no other places to get food once you get out there. They have wireless internet, but you have to stand outside near their office to use it. Some areas were cluttered and dirty. The handle on the fridge where you could get sandwiches was black and obviously had been for a long time. The boats and fishing equipment were all nice and in good shape (except the rain pants I borrowed that basically disintegrated - they didn't have a good selection for small people which I'm guessing is not usually an issue). Among the clutter on the boat we went out on was a toilet paper roll with Obama's face on it - plus or minus, depending on who you are. read more
