This is one of the best bakeries in the city. Roeser's has been a Chicago tradition for over 100 years. Where else can you see the history and evolution of Humbolt Park, than in this establishment? The pasteries are delicious, and they make cakes fresh to order. What's even more bad @ss about this place is that they evolved with the hood. The bakery is plentiful in the mornings, and they had Blackhawks cookies for all you Playoff supporters! The Intelligentsia coffee was nice and bold, the way I like it. The wonderful aroma of cookies and pastries hits you before you even open the door! We tried the Pecan Sticky Buns, Cheese Danish, Maryann's, and an assortment of cookies. No Smiley Face cookies the day we were there, but I've ordered some to have shipped the next time they bake them. I grew up in a small town in Southern Illinois called Granite City. There was a bakery that has since closed called Mrs. Seibolds. Roeser's brought back memories of my childhood with the butter cookies with sprinkles. This review is grossly "dated" but since I'm looking to get another cake of its kind, I though the review is justified. Unless you searched the web for keywords like "exotic cake, dirty cake, nude cake, boob cake, etc" and you did a bit of homework you would never know that Roeser's bakery has an alternate website which has photos posted of these and other risque type cakes. Ordering cakes of this nature require a phone call and initial visit for payment. I was in the planning stages of a bachelors / birthday party some time ago and thought what if? That what if was realized when Google turned up this find. So I ordered a boob cake. Ordering is the standard process as mentioned above. Cake was pretty big and served more than 10 for our group. Per the website http://www.chicagoexoticcakes.com/ it was the "nude female bikini" cake. A lot of fondant was used in the creation of the cake and didn't compliment the taste of the cake any. After watching a lot of custom cake shows on Cable TV, I think cakes of this nature can taste good, what happened here? who knows. We go for the butter cookies and sweet rolls which by the way are thee best on the face of the planet! I hope these cookies are in heaven! Ordering a cusom cake was a nightmare! My friend's son was getting baptized and I decided to buy the cake as a present for the party. I came into the bakery about 3 weeks before the baptism. The cake decorators were not in and I was told to email the cake that I wanted to some email address the girl wrote down. A week later I sent an email with the picture and description of the cake. A few days later I received an email stating that I will get a price quote within 5 days. It was Thursday and I still haven't received an email. I called the bakery and they directed me to the girl who handles the custom cake orders. She told me the cake decorators have my order and I will get a price quote a little later on that day. It is now Friday (day before the baptism) and I still heard nothing. I called the bakery to find out they didn't make my cake! I wanted to die. I had a perfect custom bible cake in fondant that I had ordered and nobody made the cake. The girl I spoke to said she can make a bible cake covered in buttercream. I was really upset since I did not want a buttercream cake. They look so ugly! I had no choice since it was the night before. The girl was really nice, but I was never offered any type of discount. The people who work here are lovely, and I appreciate old-school family-owned businesses. But the sad fact is that I came here specifically for an apple fritter and it was not good. It was fried really hard and drowned in treacly glaze. The underside was crispy and the top was an ocean of icing. I would estimate the flavor profile at 10% apple, 15% deep fried dough, and 75% sugar. While I was there, I picked up a couple of chocolate chip cookies, and those were underwhelming too. One of the most important things I've ever eaten came from Roeser's: Red Velvet Donuts. Did I mention I'm wild about donuts before? I am. My partners in crime live in Humboldt Park, and they usually get all of their birthday cakes from Roeser's. My homegirl mentioned to me a few months ago that they had a Facebook special they were promoting: Red velvet donut holes. I drool just thinking about that. When I made it to Roeser's for the first time in August, they were out of the donut holes, but they did have red velvet donuts. I got a couple of them, and my homeboy and I groaned like humpback whales as we ate them in my car. I drove to Michigan that day, and later that week I spotted a red velvet donut crumb in my car. I seriously considered eating it. Fast forward, the next time I was in Chicago, my homegirl (and this is why she's hot) went over to Roeser's and got us a couple of bags of the red velvet donut holes. They're powdered, with a dollop of cream cheese icing in the middle. I think rainbows shot out of my eyes as I took the first bite into one. Yummm. Like most people, I find clowns unsettling, but I respect the fact that Bozo chose Roeser's as his official Chicago bakery. When a kid won the first Bozo Bucket, they received a Roeser's cake. There is a framed homage to Bozo on the wall in Roeser's, where you can see the enormous cake they baked him for his show's anniversary. Getting to the point, the donuts here are creative and mouth watering. The options were staggering, and I eventually settled on a bacon maple long john and an almond joy donut (coconut, chocolate, and almonds). Ohhhhh yeah. Expectations of deliciousness were surpassed. MEDIOCRE CAKE - BAD MANAGEMENT/BAD SERVICE I ordered a cake to be picked up at 11:30 AM, arrived at 1:15 PM and not only was the cake not ready but it had not even been made. Staff only said "they were putting it together" no other explanation was offered and waited for about 30 minutes for my cake to be ready. As far as the cake, great strawberry filling, great flavored butter cream, extremely dry chocolate cake that was so dry when the cake was sliced into the layers completely fell apart and we ended up just having to pile the separated layers on the plates. Some weird looking and and absolutely flavorless wafer shaped flowers that were hastily and badly airbrushed were added as decoration. If the cake was absolutely delicious I would have tolerated the wait, but it was sub-par at best. I could have gotten a better cake at a chain grocery store in 5 minutes and everyone would have been happy. read more

Was in the area so stopped in on Sunday a little pass 5pm to try and pick up a cupcake. No cupcakes, only a small selection left. I settled on a sprinkle chocolate cake slice for my niece, 3 of the sugar free cookies for my guy and a peanut butter jelly donut. My guy said the cookies were good. We shared the donut (beware of eating this while driving since my guy squirted all the jelly over his shirt (DOH)....) It was unique and still very fresh. My niece seemed to enjoy the sprinkle part of the cake. I took a bite, but thought it was a bit too sweet for me. My brother said it wasn't bad, moist and tasty. I needed to order some sheet cakes to celebrate our company owner's birthday. I chose Roeser's based on the yelp reviews and the proximity to our office. Since Roser's does portrait cakes, we hoped that our company logos wouldn't be too much different. When the woman I spoke with asked what colors I wanted the "Happy Birthday John" in, I just said, oh, whatever you think looks nice based on the logos. She helped me pick good flavor combos (chocolate cherry and vanilla strawberry), we decided on delivery, and after an annoyingly long wait (I think they forgot I was on hold) they came back with total and order numbers. The cakes were delivered an hour late (which was fine... notice I still ranked them 5 stars) after the delivery man called to let us know he was a little behind. We opened the boxes and were stunned. These cakes were more gorgeous than any I've ever seen. And the attention to detail was so careful! She matched our logo's font in the happy birthday message! She hand-drew a goose! She added gorgeous flowers and borders that we didn't even talk about! I posted 2 pictures so you can see the finished product. Beyond the initial delight, we were also happy to find that the cakes were beyond delicious. Buttercream can get too buttery, but not this one. It was as light and sweet as any whipped cream frosting. The filling had huge chunks of fruit, and the cake itself was moist but not too sugary. And all this was for about $1.50 a slice. I cannot recommend this bakery enough. I can't wait to go over and try all their other goodies now. My coworker wants to use them for her wedding cake. read more

This place is great! It kind of bums me out that I didn't discover its awesomeness until near 6 months after I moved to the area and I'll be moving in less than a month. The wife, who is very very pregnant at this point, wanted a cheese danish, and one from the corner store just wouldn't do. Where would I find one on a Sunday afternoon? She asked me, "Do you know where there's a bakery near here?" It was just then that I remembered Roeser's only a few blocks away. I walked in and the place was packed. It took me a second to figure out how it all worked. I heard someone call out a number then looked to my left and saw one of those things like they have at the deli at the grocery store with numbers to pull. I took a number and tried to see around people standing at the counter to see the goodies inside. Apparently, there are a lot of very wide people in Chicago. My number was called close to ten minutes later, and I rushed up to the counter and asked for my wife's coveted cheese danish. It turned out they were out of them. D'oh! they did however have something else that was heart shaped with the same type of frosting that comes on a danish with a cheese filling. I also got a couple of apple turnovers and something called a pastry pretzel. Everything was absolutely incredible and delicious beyond my wildest imagination. I'm not much of a cake person but I had to order a cake for a 20th year anniversary at work. I ordered the mocha cake since that's the cake my employee likes. I pre ordered the cake to make it easier and to make sure they had one for me. The price was good at about $20 a cake that fed about 10 people. The cream and filling was fresh and tasty. The cake had yellow and chocolate cake inside. The cake was actually really good and like I said I don't eat cake much. While I am not a huge fan, and in fact feel that their cakes are on the dry side, one thing I can say about Roesers is they are consistent. Roesers cakes have been a big part of my family's birthdays and events. The flavoring of their cakes has stayed the same for as long as I have been alive. I had to return a cake because the taste wasnt good. It tasted old and It was way too sweet, you could taste the granulated sugar on the filling. We paid 56 dollars and they didnt want to give me my money back and only gave me 40 dollars instore credit, without any receipt. Every time i go and try to use the credit they tell me the owner is not there and that in order to use the credit he has to approve it. Worst place ever but im planing on calling Telemundo Responde because its not fair what they are doing and i know its not alot of money but they souldnt be doing that.
