They do in fact specialise in Afro-Caribbean hair (of which I am not the owner, although you'd be forgiven into thinking so when I've backcombed it into oblivion). They have a dedicated stylist for this kind of hair and whilst this is clearly a focus of sorts, they have a wide range of clientele so if you don't have Afro-Caribbean hair don't be put off. They are just as welcoming.

Well...this hair academy is definitely one of Manchester's best kept secrets. A friend recommended it to me in autumn, and I'm not looking back, no sir. I had previously come to accept that I was too poor to afford haircuts whilst in Manchester, resigning to a bi-annual chop when I went home and earned some modest pennies. However, a wash, cut and blow dry here will set you back a mere £6 which is flabbergasting but fabulous. Good bye split ends...hello chic and shiny! What is the catch? - I hear you ask. Well, patience is a prerequisite. The aforementioned wash, cut and blow dry took no less than three hours. That said, my hair is particularly thick, unruly and rather chaotic. The lucky owners of 'normal' hair might only have to sit for two hours or so. This is because it is an academy, so the hairdressers are still learning. Whilst this does not necessarily compromise the quality of cut, it does mean it takes them longer to do what a qualified hairdresser could probably do in half the time. I'm sincere when I say the quality isn't reduced. It might have taken three hours, but it was the best cut I've ever had. Because they're still learning...they don't do anything without approval from their instructor who hovers over their shoulder, watching their every move to make sure they get it right. I kind of felt sorry for my stylist actually - it must be horrible to have someone breathing down your neck like that! But I guess that's how we learn, eh? The stylist herself was lovely. Very friendly, and listened to everything I said, and giving it appropriate consideration. She was very keen to make sure she was giving me exactly what I wanted, other than some qualified hairdressers who just get a rough idea of what you want and then do what they're used to doing. However I wish I could say the same of the people in charge. There were two instructors, and one of them, Nicky Oliver himself actually, was lovely actually, very friendly and helpful. Yet, the woman, well suffice to say that the term 'ice queen' could have been invented specifically for her. She doesn't treat the clients like customers, more like lab rats, talking over our heads as though we aren't there, and some of the things she said about me to my stylist were actually very rude, so much so that I felt I had to speak up and explain that even though it was an academy, I was still a paying client and I did not deserve to be treated thus - and this is coming from a girl who hates confrontation! Another thing: the location is perfect. Smack in the middle of my beloved Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter - ideal for a pre- or post-shopping trip. If you love treating yourself and having the whole salon experience, this isn't for you. But if you just want the job done, this is excellent value for money. Just make sure you have a thick skin.

From the moment I walked in I had a bad feeling the way my coat was slung on a hanger with no care, I should of cancelled there and then. The so called "experienced stylist" I was told on the phone who was cutting my hair has butchered my hair with thinning scissors. Every place I've been to in the past, the professional stylist would use skill with scissors not cut and butcher with thinning scissors, my hairs now weak, frizzy, the ends are utter mess and it feels spiky and uneven when I put my hands through it and its standing up all over the place, god knows how long it will take to fix... Its the worst haircut I've ever had as far back as I can remember, I feel literally sick its that bad, I'm absolutely disgusted every time I look at it in the mirror. I have never ever felt the need to write a bad review about anything but by the state of my hair right now I feel I have to. I went there on the back of their online 4 star rating and thought Id be ok going to Nicky Oliver. Big mistake.

Jam Hair's 4 star and above reviews and £21 for a haircut sold it to me, but now I see that they were written in 09 and I'm thinking that I should have been paying a bit more attention. Bad little Yelper. When I called for an appointment the only hairdressers available were £27 and £29 respectively... well still O.K I thought, so I went ahead and booked. Unfortunately when I arrived I was greeted with about as much enthusiasm as if I had just walked in and tried to sell double glazing. With an interior ecchoing a cross between Crystal Maze's 'Future' zone and a scene from Dallas, I was beginning to wonder what I'd let myself in for. The customer service did pick up as my hairdresser, Simon, was lovely and chatty and not too overbearing, but his technique was unfortunately not as good as his chit chat. I have quite a mane of hair and asked for layering and a swept side fringe, all of which he gave me, yet there was still that certain something missing. It just looks rather, well... f... l... a... t... Which is a shame and perhaps acceptable at £21, but you really hope for more for £29 cut. In more professional salons, they've also attempted more elaborate blowdrying for a similar price, but here it was similar to what I can manage by washing it with Fairy Liquid on a camping trip and letting dry in the Northerly winds. If I'd have asked for a Kate Bush maybe I'd have liked it. But I didn't. They seemed to stock most Kérastase products, but unfortunatley none were recommended to me so I left empty handed. Perhaps Jam Hair would be fine if you do manage to book a £21 hairdresser and just need a trim, but on the whole, this salon didn't leave the greatest of impressions.

Located less than 10 minutes walk from the city centre yet they don't charge city prices. There are a number of stylists available but I have only ever been to the owner Denny. You will be guaranteed great service and a nice chat with styles that are upto date with latest trends and fit your personal requirements. They always have local students studying and getting experience of working in a salon so they even give back to the community and help up and coming stylists. I highly recommend Denny's as the place to go in Manchester to get your hair styled. 8 years of visits and always a stylish cut and never a bad one. Can't argue with those numbers.

Chorlton has a reputation of being home to a diverse and happy family of quirky businesses and community activities, but I think K-Style would give Wowie Zowie, The Bar and any of them a run for their money! The barber chairs are so vintage they are back in fashion, and Ron Keeling's braces and bald head mark him as also being from an earlier era. Framed pictures of celebrities and signed sporting memorabilia adorn the walls, large ceramic batsman and umpire figurines stand 'not out' on the mantelpiece and union jack bunting finishes off the look. As I informed my stylist what sort of cut I was after, I was slightly taken aback when Mr. K interjected offering me a haircut like his, patting his bald pate for emphasis! The Iranian stylist who cut my hair is equally amusing, but also a gentle and highly skilled barber. I gratefully received his offer of a mug of water - he'd noticed how hot I was, how nice! Unfortunately the hairdresser my friend used was unavailable in the week that I wanted to get my hair done. I opted to use someone of equivalent level and thought that given the salons good reviews that would be just as good. At the salon I found the staff to be pleasant but uninterested in me. The hairdresser I used kept watching the door as if I was just a filler appointment in between their more important clients. I found the same with the reception staff who just left me standing there aimlessly for a while whilst they chatted. I wouldn't have minded the staff's dismissiveness so much if the cut had been good. However, once I got home I noticed that there were long pieces of hair that that the hairdresser has missed and I ended up having to cut these piece to length myself at home. I understand that it might be easy to miss small bits of hair but these were reasonable sizeable sections. Overall I was just disappointed. My friend had spoken about how much she liked the salon as they were very friendly and the cut/colours were always good. I had to sadly disagree. However, I do note that this could be a one time lapse in service and I am going back again tomorrow to the hairdresser actually recommended by my friend so if they are much better I will happily change my views and let you all know.

It's based just up the road from where I live, which was the main reason for choosing this particular hairdresser (I was feeling lazy). The salon is modern, clean and welcoming and the lady who cut my hair was chatty but not to the point where I wanted to shut her up, which is usually the case with hairdressers. I'm one of those people who enjoy being pampered, so the less chit-chat the better. Thankfully, she had a really soothing voice which made me feel so relaxed I almost nodded off as she was massaging conditioner into my scalp. As the salon isn't far from Manchester city centre, prices aren't exactly cheap. I paid £17 for the trim, which is pretty steep compared to prices in the 'burbs and further afield. But it's convenient and they did do a good job (I came out with a lovely, shiny, blunt, jet-black mane) so I can't really complain.
