The classes are more boot camp style than crossfit. Pamela, the owner, develops a daily workout that each of the Urban Athlete classes does the same that day. Each class includes a 10 minute warm up, 5 minutes of instruction, followed by 30-35 minutes of work. We use a lot of hand weights, kettle bells, and occasionally barbells. There are also plenty of body weight exercise like burpees, pushups, pull ups, and planks. The instructors are my favorite part. They show us how to do each exercise, cheer us on, and give pointers to help your form. Class sizes typically range from 5-12 people. The workouts are for most fitness levels and ages, but not all, as they are hard and meant to push you. The members feed off each other for motivation. If you have serious physical limitations, personal training sessions might be a better way to start.

They have the options for personal training, IsoPhit (which is intense and great), plus virtual participation in classes. Can't speak highly enough of this place. Definitely a hidden gem among all the other bigger outfits. Worth checking out if you're looking to improve conditioning and strength in a friendly environment.

Coach Paul is extremely knowledgeable and patient and Coach/Owner David Lee programs workouts that will align with your personal fitness goals (whether you want to get bigger, smaller, faster or stronger.) I've dropped in and competed at other CrossFit locations, but I can tell you that the community and energy that you will feel at CFMY is incomparable. Whether you're a Division I athlete, or just an average Joe that want's to be the healthiest you, all workouts have modifications so that you can avoid injury and get the most from your workout. I highly recommend CFMY to anyone that's looking to take their fitness to the next level. (Also, they frequently offer awesome deals on living social to try it out - so keep an eye out for their next promotion!)

I heard about CFMY from a friend so I decided to give their OnRamp class a try and it changed my life. Coach Paul and and Coach/Owner Dave are some of the most knowledgable people in the crossfit world. Dave's program makes you work hard and pushes you close to your limit so you're always working and sweating. Paul makes sure that our forms are correct. He values form over numbers any day of the week. They know that bad form leads to injuries so CFMY emphasizes form over anything else and that is when you know that you're at a good gym that cares about you. In addition, the CFMY community is one of the best there is. It's like a family that keeps pushing you to be the best that you can be. The comradery between the athletes and the coaches is seriously one of a kind and nothing comes close to it.

They have all old cracked yoga mats, a mix of lights that are flickering or no glass covering. There is only one stair climbing machine that is very old. A number of pieces of equipment had no signs or the adhesive left from where the sign once lived. I wanted to like this gym but yesh, you're going to charge me $70 for this? (Or whatever it was bc there was no document with the prices, it was all verbal.) High price and a shit box, not worth it. They really need to upgrade equipment or cut prices.

There always seems to be a leak somewhere in the ceiling, there's always a TV, stationary bike, or treadmill on the fritz; and ever since opening the Pole Dancing studio (brilliant idea by the way) downstairs, which always seems empty, all of the equipment has been crammed onto one tiny floor. I'm basically paying (alot I may add) for convenience. I love the fact that I can walk to the gym and not hassle with the stress of parking and traffic. Some more positives: they have an amazing personal trainer on staff. Although working out with him felt like an hour long torture session, I was pleased to see that after a few months I could finally do more than a few girlie push ups. I can't recommend the personal trainer here enough. Additionally, although Sweat is filled with young Manayunk peeps, it somehow avoids feeling like a meat market (surprisingly so). So although I feel like I'm paying close to a fortune to work out here, perhaps Sweat isn't so bad..

Some of our classes are just a few people and the personalized instruction is something you can't get at most gyms without paying for personal training (now that's expensive). We were crossfit newbies and Jim went over the basis with us so we would be ready for class. Our first few weeks were tough and it continues to be but in just a short amount of time we can both feel the difference in our energy, stamina, and strength. Meg is an amazing coach and knows just how to push you to be your best. She cares about your success and health. When my bf hurt his back she ran to buy him a heat pack in the middle of class and sat by him for the rest of it. I can't say enough positive things about this box and am so happy we made the decision to start!
