Rosco's Burger Inn The score will surprise you... Surprisingly, I've never been to the actual restaurant. I've tasted Rosco's before, but never fresh, and never warm. One time it was wet. Anyways... I had to courage to order some Rosco's, because I was able to hide my identity under a face mask. Rosco's is an iconic staple in the El Paso, TX burger joint microcosm, located at 3829 Tompkins Road, El Paso, TX 79930. Nicknamed after the founder and owner's family name, "Carrasco", it was founded in 1955. It's the epitome of an old school restaurant that stayed true to it's roots. I heard the "chile stew" and onion rings are top notch. Unfortunately, I'm not the EP Chile Stew Snob. So I'll take people's word for it for next time. In this occasion I ordered the double cheeseburger with everything on it -- patties, cheese, LTOP, and grilled onions. Interestingly enough, it had fresh onions on the bottom and grilled onions on top. Who doesn't love grilled onions on their burger? The bun was freshly buttered and toasted. Layered bottom to top was mustard, chopped iceberg lettuce (my favorite), two slices of tomato, pickles, freshly chopped white onion, double patties, double cheese and grilled onions melted into the cheese. WOW.... Now I can honestly say, unlike the actual WHATABURGER, when I bit into this, I said WHAT A BURGER. I've only ever said that to 3 burgers in my life... This burger is the closest I've been in the search for my El Paso Unicorn of Burgers. The salsa puts it over the top. Rosco's Burger Inn is a classic and family favorite. I grew up coming here and the nostalgia never changes. Now that I live in Austin, I make it a point to visit Rosco's when visiting El Paso. Their food is absolutely delicious. I can't say I'll list my favorite because I'd mention the whole menu, lol. It may look like a hole in the wall but their food is amazing! These burgers have the same type of cult following in El Paso, though one would freely admit that these ground rounds are far greasier than those of the internationally famous California chain. That doesn't matter because between this joint (which opened in 1955) and Charcoaler on the west side of town, El Paso has the cache to match up with any competitor serving quick and delicious hamburgers in a diner-style restaurant. This is the first time I have been able to eat here after moving back home 5 years ago. (I tried coming a few times only to find it was closed). I really can't remember if I've ever eaten here but the reputation of simple and delicious burgers from my family & friends always kept me interested in coming. I can now say I totally agree with the "simple & delicious" description of the food and place. My wife and I came for lunch on a Friday afternoon where many patrons were eating on their lunch hour. This is a true workings mans eatery that has the quality of food that attracts all people. It's great food at a great price- better than any fast-food, mass produced, chemically filled food that markets to the masses and staffed with less-than-average service workers. I'll always recommend this place to others and try to show up when it's open more often! read more

This place is a classic old burger joint, and if you have ever been to the Apple Pan in LA, this is cut from the same cloth(http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-apple-pan-los-angeles) The patties are on the small side, like the same size as a McDonald's patty, about 1.6oz, so you are going to want at least the double if not the triple. Or get a couple of single burgers. The fries were perfect, the onion rings were way above average and everything is made fresh right before your eyes. It's still the same old Nuthin' Fancy burger spot. After you walk in, expect to pay cash. They did seem like they had one of those "Square"processors, though, when I went on May 25, but it looks like there might be a 'convenience fee" for credit cards. Could be wrong about that. In the past, I got a really good burger for about $5 that was worth the trip out there. Now what you have is a thinned patty that's bone dry on WalMart-style buns, you know the ones, the family-pack ones that are white and kind of crumbly on the inside. I'd compare it to a Whataburger, but it's not as good. No need for extra napkins at all...youah little chin is gonna stay high and dry! read more

I appreciate that the burgers come with everything and you do not have to request toppings. The buns are toasted and buttery, and the meat is tender and juicy. The reason for the 4 star rating is because the meat could be a little more flavorful. I had eaten straight up tofu for like two weeks prior so I was expecting a little more flavor. The fries are also just okay, but overall a great burger joint! Service. The service is great. The staff thought I had ordered to go and had packaged everything nicely. The cashier quickly realized her mistake, apologized, and offered me a glass of water. I asked for a basket before she could offer one, but she made sure throughout my meal that I had everything that I needed. Atmosphere. Been going to Roscoes for decades now. I just realized I never wrote a review! Well, here it is. If you are looking for a $20 gourmet, fancy ingredients, blah blah blah burger, this is not it. This is an old school style burger full of flavors. I usually order the cheeseburger basket, put ketchup and the salsa from the little mayo like dispenser they give you and every time I am about to take a bite, I put a little salsa on my burger. I wish they had another location over on the west side. But, I'm good with the location because I think it has a certain old school feel. This restaurant has different hours posted on their door and on the Internet, but in typical small business fashion they close whenever they feel like it without regard for their customers. If you want to eat there call ahead to Ake sure they're open. The door sign says they close at 8 pm on Friday/Saturday, we walked in at 6:50 pm on Friday only to be told they were closed without an explanation, the kitchen was sparkling clean, they probably stopped serving at 6 to make sure they left early. I'm glad we did!! This is a AWESOME old fashioned burger joint!! The food was is excellent and the service was great!!! The Beef Caldillo was exceptional!! Loaded with beef and vegetables. It had just the right amount of spicyness! The burgers were juicy and very full of flavor. They fries were just right too!!! I will definitely stop here next time I go through El Paso. If you consider a greasy, cheesy handmade burger the best in life (and you should) and don't mind it being a bit of a dive, this is your place. Good fries, excellent burgers, and cut above the (also good) burger dive competition at Good Luck Cafe. Be warned that groups over four may have difficulties getting seated together, especially if it's not busy. I saw a group of five come in when there were still plenty of tables available and the waitress steered them to the bar, a pretty inconvenient arrangement, rather than offering to push tables together. Local and the authentic diner feel. Two things I love about Rosco's. My co-workers and I sat at the counter directly in front of the grill and the fryer. They casually write your order in their secret diner language and you pay at the register as you leave. Cash only, FYI! The burgers weren't my favorite but they are all conveniently cut in two for an easier feasting. The patty reminded me of the whataburger patty; it's thin and more on the dry side. However, with all the toppings, especially the onions I think, make it a decent burger. The burger basket comes with a side of fries. You can even make it chili cheese fries, but from what I saw, they didn't look too appetizing. This place was crowded during Friday lunch; people were even ordering take out. This place which used to be an El Paso institution has been going downhill for a bit now. The whole downhill bit started a few years ago when they started using frozen patties. The whole Rosco's thing used to be to see those great fresh fatty patties they would use and then the old man would thrown a handful of raw onions on top and beat them into the patty...flip it in 4 or so minutes and cook the other side with the onions frying in the fat on the flat top! I mean yummy (the healthy nuts on this site can go to the next reviews..but next to pork fat, burger fat rules!). Throw in onion rings and the killer salsa and you are golden. The last few trips have not been that good. Burgers where kinda meh, onion rings good and fries were just soggy and old tasting. Service was still pretty dang good and the waitress was hilarious. Still lines at the cashier, cash only etc. etc. I seriously think that if they are going to stop making killer old fashioned diner burgers like they used to, they should either sell beer or let us bring our own. A cold beer is a must with a mediocre burger. Go at least once for the nostalgia, but not for the food. read more

Oh, Rosco's. The years we have spent together. This is the go-to place when looking for a mean burger with outstanding taste, quality, and El Paso tradition. Don't accept any other substitutes. When you walk in, look to your right. The menu is on the wall for all to see, don't ask for one. When you look at the menu, notice the no frills Rosco's offers. If one patty isn't enough for you don't be afraid to ask for a double, triple, etc. Also, no bacon here who needs it with how good this burger tastes on its own? Every time I can make it to Rosco's, I order a Cheeseburger basket (chili cheese fries depending on my mood). Every time my order gets to me, I am never disappointed. The service is good. The food is even better. Also, make sure you go to the bathroom before. I went there for the first time today and let me tell you first and last time! This girl was extremely rude had our fries sitting out for at least 30 minutes before our burgers were out and when we brought it up to her attention she approached us all stupid with the fries in her hands demanding for us to touch them so we can make sure they were still warm! Wow. This place makes the most incredible burgers the old-fashioned way. They cook the fresh onions in with the meat. Even more surprising, it's one of the few "griddled" (non-char-broiled) burgers that I like. Not much to look at from the outside. It's a converted gas station from the 1950s, and it's tinier than tiny inside. Good luck wedging your way in during lunch time. Is the wait worth it? ABSOLUTELY. Look the other way when you get in the door - there are numerous appearances of health code violations here...but don't worry, neither I nor anyone else that goes here has any complaints about it - it's part of the ambiance.
