In my opinion Gravesend college failed to provide an enjoyable and informative course. As a mature…read morestudent, I was advised the course would be flexible around school drop off/pick up times however when the course started, threats were made regarding punctuality and attendance. Various staff were unable to adapt their teaching/attitude to mature students and adopted a patronising/bullying/rude attitude which was upsetting and unacceptable. I paid full course costs (over £1000) but did not feel I received value for money. The course was disorganised with a lack of equipment. Approx 65% of the students had no equipment for approx 6 weeks due to awaiting agreement for funding and there was inadequate surplus equipment until kits arrived. Products were not always replenished/ordered which was frustrating and unprofessional when bringing in paying clients. The course was over subscribed with insufficient work stations and sinks. We had to wait a considerable amount of time for the tutor's attention or for a sink to become available. The course was undertaken via a City & Gilds online system however access was not provided until early February (4/5 months into the course) and we were unable to sit tests or have assessments entered. Certain staff showed favoritism with payments for services on particular students being unfairly waivered and clients being given to the same students on frequent occasions. I never had the opportunity to work on a client and had to rely on friends/family for services which gave me no confidence working on people I didn't know. I raised a formal complaint but it was not managed as per procedure and the College was unable to take an impartial view. I appealed my complaint to the Skills Funding Agency who agreed to progress a number of the issues. Their support was subsequently withdrawn due to these issues being 'historical', which they would be by the time I had exhausted the complaints procedure! I have received my qualification however my love of hairdressing is now tainted and I have no confidence in my ability.

The architecture is really awesome and throughout the day spent in Ravensbourne you enjoy a lot of sunshine as the windows are merged with in the block-like structure of the building. Views are also outstanding as sitting in one room you can ponder on the Emirates Air Line as well as the oval of O2 that is just a footstep away from this place. I wish more events were organized in this space as traveling to North Greenwich would be much more exciting if to only visit Ravensbourne. Inside the layout is quite exceptional with lots of open spaces and ad-hoc meeting pods. This is a prime example of co-working space as well as modern office design.

I loved the displays of work by students and the idea of being able to check out classes before signing up. Mind you, the hour's taster was not really representative and confusing rather than enlightening. I have also been for a couple of events as Ravensbourne is regularly used for conferences. Most recently I attended a 2-day conference by the Craft Council which was extremely well organised in perfect setting. The college is located right next to the Millennium Dome and provides a good excuse to have a nose around an area I wouldn't normally visit.
