Pretty good pub located on charming Rose Street and came recommended by another pub close by that did not serve food. They had plenty of traditional pub options along with some American-influenced items. Opted for the wild boar and chorizo pie which came with mashed and roasted veggies. The pie was very tasty with a flaky crust and plenty of flavor. The veggies were also quite good, however the mashed potatoes were a bit flavorless. It paired well with the draught Scottish Heavy Ale which complimented the flavors. Prices were good although the service was a bit slow. read more

4 hangry women of a certain age landed thankfully at the only pub still serving food at 9:30. We would have been happy with any offerings but the pie with beef and mushrooms, salmon steak and green salad were all at gastro level. Berry and apple crumble al a mode . Had a great night at Rose Street brewery tonight! We were walking around downtown Edinburgh and just happened upon it. The pub is downstairs and the restaurant is upstairs. The pub was really busy and we were interested in dinner so we went up top. The atmosphere was great and our server was super friendly and helpful. Wanting to take in all that we could during a short trip, we opted to split a trio of meat pies and their fish and chips. The fish and chips were really good, but the meat pies absolutely stole the show! That's what they were famous for and now we know why. I don't drink, so I can't really comment on the drink selection, but I would go back again in a heartbeat. They have other Scottish classics (like haggis) that I would like to try. As odd as it sounds the folks at the table next to us ordered it and it looked really good. read more

Rose Street Brewery is a fine chain pub (part of Nicholson's) along trendy Rose Street in Edinburgh's new town. It was hopping when I visited, and I just barely got a table. Trying to power through a day in Edinburgh after an overnight transatlantic flight, we were looking for casual and quiet. And a beer or two. Maybe walking up and down touristy Rose Street ain't the best place to do that, but we might have picked the best one of the bunch for our limited purposes. Early on a Thursday evening, the street-level pub was pretty quiet, and the first-floor restaurant was even cozy and sedate. (Although apparently recently remodeled, so it didn't quite have that vintage feel this place is plainly shooting for.) After eating airplane junk and then a heavy-duty haggis-neeps-and-tatties lunch (see prior review), I wanted lighter fare. Scottish salmon and cullen skink hit the spot. Never had had the latter, I don't think, and it seemed like a better version of the New England chowder that you get in the U.S.--great smokiness from the smoked haddock, and a stronger presence of herbs. When I got my Nicholson's Pale Ale, I began to realize that we had made contact with the Nicholson's empire of pubs that we soon learned has a dominant presence in the central part of the city. Nice cozy restaurant on a Main Street, Rose Street...lots of restaurants here. We were looking to have dinner around 7pm but so was half of Edinburgh! When we got in line to get in we were told they don't rush anyone seated but we decided to wait. It wasn't long and our server was very quick and efficient. We wanted local food and heard "pies" were good so I got a chicken, mushroom and truffle sauced pie.. delicious; with mashed potatoes , greens and carrots. Bruce got lamb and haggis pie in a little casserole pan with mashed potatoes on top. With a pint of beer we were set to go! read more

Rose Street is a pedestrian mall area with lots of shops and restaurants. Always looking for a brewery no matter where I am, we ran into this establishment. It is a two level building. The bottom area is a pub which is for ordering drinks only. The upper level is where the restaurant is located. There is plenty of seating downstairs but can be crowded upstairs. We ordered a flight downstairs first to try some local beers. We then headed upstairs for lunch. We started with the Smoked Scottish Salmon (the best smoked salmon), fish and chips and for dessert we were told we had to try the Cranachan which is a traditional Scottish dessert. All of our lunch was great. Our waitress was very nice and loved her suggestions. There were a few other things we wanted to try but will have to wait until next time. read more

Just a huge disappointment. I moved to the States about 20 years ago and had told my family and friends about this place. The bartender had an attitude and made up a law about having only 10 people allowed in the (empty) bar. Our group of 12 family and friends were between 18 and 60 years old and we were spending some time traveling Scotland after my wedding two days before. Until this moment everyone had commented how friendly this country was. I would advise groups, particularly Americans who would like to spend some real money to not bring it to this place. read more

I love this wee place. Edinburgh has done well to preserve the old school pubs in the city centre so that they can be enjoyed by new generations. The Rose St Brewery is very quaint, the upstairs lounge is my favourite part of the pub. Carpeted floors and old pictures of the city line the walls. A plaque boasts it as being the Pub of The Year in 1985. I popped in for lunch here and ordered a goats cheese salad - very unlike me as I'm a huge carnivore, however it sounded light and refreshing on the menu, and light and refreshing it was. It came with two huge chunks of goats cheese on a bed of mix salad leaves and seasonal veg with a light dressing. With a nice Guinness this it hit the spot perfectly. Staff could have been a bit more attentive, though I doubt they get much training. Nevertheless it is a boozer, so expect nothing more! Kudos Rose St Brewery, and don't ever change! read more

The Rose Street Brewery is yet another pub on the pub central Rose Street. Situated in Rose Street, the Rose Street Brewery is right in the centre of the city and it is just around the corner from the main shopping street in Edinburgh, Princes Street, and so it is a convenient place to reach. I have only been to this pub once, and if I am brutally honest, I wouldn't really want to go back. Its not that there is anything particularly wrong with it, but nor is there is there anything right with it either. Rose Street Brewery is pretty bland and characterless, and it indistinguishable from most of the other pubs in the city. This pub serves the usual selection of beers, ciders, wines and the standard range of spirits and the drinks are priced pretty competitively with a large glass of the house wine costing less than £5. Food is also served here and there is a pretty good selection of meals on their menu including steak, pies and fish and chips which are also well priced. Rose Street Brewery is a pretty characterless pub and there are plenty of other pubs in Edinburgh with more about them. read more

Last night near 930 my wife and I were trying to find something good to eat before everywhere closed. We took a chance on this place and we're glad we did. Friendly staff great food. We eat had the Cuddle Skink soup to start, which was as good as most chowders in the states but less heavy. For our main meals I had the Crofters pie, which was similar to a Shepard's pie but with slow cooked lamb and haggis instead of beef. It was savory and delicious. This is a decent pub but no longer a brewery and has not been one for years. The atmosphere is light and there are fun local facts and pictures posted around (extra star). The location is split into two sections with a restaurant above and a pub below. That said, BEWARE their food or at least AVOID the fish and chips. I ordered a Bass ale with fish and chips to chase it down. The chips were not memorable. The fish, however, was...in a bad way. It was sweet! Sweet, battered fish. Previously, I couldn't have imagined such gustatory torture. Then I ordered fish and chips and was served what amounted to a FISH DONUT, with chips, and peas sloshing about. #FAIL. read more

I should have read the reviews. But I saw 3 stars, 'A-OK' and thought this'll do for a quick pub lunch with the boyfriend. Oh, how I was wrong. Décor wise, the Rose St Brewery is lovely. Drinks, service, all fine. Food? Don't. Don't bother. I ordered the steak pie, and when it arrived I lifted up the pastry lid to reveal about 4 tiny bits of meat and two even smaller pieces of carrot sitting in a puddle of gravy. And I was going to be charged nearly £8 for what amounted to some pastry and mash, and very little else? Eh, no thanks! So I sent it back, cancelling the replacement as by this time I needed to head back to work. The only reason I'm not giving it 1 star (because really that 'pie', if you can call it that, should never have been served), is that my boyfriend's bangers and mash were alright - but nothing more than that. read more

This places looks like a charming pub which ought to be able to do good pub lunches. Wrong. We waited over an hour for limp, soggy sandwiches and when we asked the barmaid how long our food would be she barked at us that the kitchen was busy. That may be all well and true but in what kind of professional establishment does it take an hour to rustle up three sandwiches? As this is the case I may go as far as to quote Home Alone 2 and ask "what kind of idiots do you have working here?" Only the finest clearly. The staff are rude and unhelpful, the food not worth the wait and therefore overpriced. Save your money and go to Marks and Spencer and pick up a sandwich, it will be miles better. read more

Found this little gem our first night in Edinburgh for some great Scottish comfort food. Started with the vegetarian scotch broth. Amazing flavor and warms you right up. Very good (little random facts about Scotland around the walls are a great conversation starter) Staff. Left a lot to be desired. Food. Ew. Like Kari S. I had fish and chips and like Kari S. I found it less than appetising. My fish was dry, not fresh and the chips were cold and seemed to be frozen. I asked for no peas and it came with what looked like extra peas. I was not amused. Its just an OK bar. Just hit me with £3.75 a pint, so so for the centre of town. Well here I am on a bleak midwinter tale, oops where did that come from? Here I am on monday 27th January @ 13:47. Myself and another couple in. It been a sort of once a week place to drop in. The staff today are friendly enough. They do meals upstairs, I think at night time. Its always busy in the summer months with tourists grabbing the outside seating area. Today seats damp and vacated outside. I wouldn't say its my favourite pub, but an OK place to pop in after shopping in town. Ahh well, time to move on. Finish my pint. Hey ho away to go! read more

Rose Street pubs in general are mostly quite similar. Unlike the noveau riche trashiness of George Street nearby, they almost always play up to the traditional, village High Street feel that permeates Rose Street itself. This doesn't always work, as traditional style pubs tend to be at their best when it's a steady band of local characters who come through the door, which isn't always likely in an area where no-one actually lives. It's alright, but feels a bit bland and somewhat of a non-event. The crowd of rowdy, incredibly drunk middle agers didn't exactly add to the atmosphere. read more

Not a brewery (there used to be one long ago), but a very friendly pub serving three beers (2 from Caledonian and the delicious Dark Moor (from The Kelburn Brewing company)). The bowl of gnocchi I had was quite tasty too. There are some nice historical pictures, tidbits and quotes on the walls, which are interesting to read. read more

This is a really nice pub. They used to server there own brew many years ago so when my uncle took me there recently he was disappointed to find they no longer do this. I really nice touch was that around the pub. On the walls there random facts about Edinburgh and Scotland, which is a amazing touch it would be good for a conversation starter. After strolling rose street looking for some food on a saturday night and trying to avoid hen and stag partys we came across this place. Went straight upstairs to the restaurant and got seated straight away. The room wasnt crowded with tables and noise but full. The service was very good and food was also very good. We had three courses and where not rushed during the meal to vacate the table to get more in, although several people arrived wanting a table. As a one night visitor to Edinburgh and looking for a place to eat and drink, I would recomend this. Free wifi with the password on a chalkboard. Resonable price for both food and drink. read more

Had the Chicken, leek and Brie meat pie and it was amazing! Perfectly cooked. Not overly heavy with cream/gravy. Crust surround was that JUST RIGHT flakiness. Huge, I could share slices with two others and it was still enough for me. Comes with mash and veg as well. Party also ordered Burger - they loved it! I had a taste, wow, that was some yummmmmmmy beef. Third person had the sausage and mash - very tasty indeed. They have my Guinness on tap here! They give you a review card, if you go online and fill it out you get 25% off your next meal. Will need to go back to order a burger! read more

The Rose Street Brewery is a great place to go. Split on two levels you have the restaurant upstairs and the bar at ground level. It was just refurbished last year and the place has a more sophisticated look now. They have a great selection of real ales and beers and the food is varied and of a good standard, they also do a great T-bone steak. When going for food it is on a first come first served basis but it is worth waiting for. There are also changing specials on there food and real ales which the staff will point out if required. read more

Milnes is on two levels with two bars and a great ambience no matter if you just want a drink with your mates, or a bit to eat as well. I prefer the lower level, just underground. The music is contemporary and not played too loud, the food is fairly standard pub food, but done well, and the staff are on their toes, friendly and polite. During the tourist season this is a frequent haunt of tourists, but don't let that put you off. Early evening is the best time to go, and the lower level is bigger than the upper, so you're more likely to find a seat downstairs. I understand that Milnes is one of a chain of pubs, but it feels standalone and unique. read more

Despite having lived in Edinburgh all of my drinking life this isn't somewhere I remember being in very often in the past, if at all so I can't compare it's post-Nicholson's version against the original. It is though reasonable enough when held up against the chain's other establishments in the city - real ales, well stocked spirits shelves, TV showing sport etc. There is no brewing on the premises though (taht may well have been the case for years). read more

I am a weird duck. Sometimes I like to drink tea and code in public places. People react in fun ways occasionally. I came here after all the cafes in town closed and I needed a nice little nook to get shit done. The place does the trick for sure, it's super cosy and pretty scottish; with cozy little booths left right and center. I had the chicken pesto with chips and it was ok. The cider was nice. It's not the spot for earth-shattering culinary experiences but it'll fill your belly for sure. When I asked for tea the foxy scottish server didn't blink. I think she had me pegged as some sort of foreign weirdo the moment I ambled into this pub. After arranging said drink, she (very politely) asked me why the fuck I would order tea at a pub bar. Amazingly enough she followed it up with an amazing list of local cafes that I now love dearly. She is a champ. 5 stars because that lady was super nice. Chances are I'll never see her again, but god do I wish the opposite. read more

This is a busy pub situated on Rose Street. When i was there with friends we ordered decent food from the extensive fod menu. They also have an upstairs for food only, with a more restaurant type of menu but we wanted the pub atmosphere. Not too expensive though the pub does get really busy at weekends and is often a stop-off for hen and stag groups. There were 2 hen groups in the night we were there. Some pubs on Rose street don't let them in but this one does. So as long as you don't mind a few noisy drinkers it's okay! read more
