Back when I went there it was still a school for all age groups. It has been several years since I was last there, but I worked first hand at the renovation of the school to make it more suitable for kids. Everything at the school was renovated in order for it to be suitable for kids, from toilets, to stairs, chairs, and table. When I was helping with the renovation of the school, I met many of the teachers that were going to work there, and those who I met seemed to be well educated teachers, that would take good care of any students going to the school.

Upon my inquiry the adjacent Georgain building houses the mixed primary and prep school. Children from different geographical and cultural backgrounds go to study and is a local community school run by a trust fund and its members. Not much green space to it I thought, its entrance grounds are very cold and grey. Quiet an air of Victorian rigidness and emotionless warmth to the place. The running and exciting shouts of little kids distracted me from my dissection. The security is superb, you can't walk in without someone opening the gates. I wonder how disciplined the young children are trained to be, especially when you have a pot-pourrie fo culture to manage. I spoke to one of the teachers who was friendly and calm in nature, she was looking after the kids in their break. The localtion of this school is important because the local community around rough Hackney, they are able to give their children a safe and cultured environment to develop. Students form St. Helens are almost guaranteed a spot at these two excellent Secondary schools, which combine for Sixth form. A brief history of the school St Helen's is a Catholic Voluntary Aided Primary School situated in the London Borough of Newham. The first school in the Parish of St. Margaret's was founded in 1870. This was destroyed by the heavy bombing of London during World War II. A statue marks the spot where the bomb landed. The present school was rebuilt by Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, in 1951 and is now part of the Diocese of Brentwood. The bungalow style building is set in beautiful grounds which includes a pond. The building is horseshoe shaped and includes a large assembly and sports hall, separate dining hall, library and a new computer room to which all children have access. My favourite was stew, and I always asked for extra gravy! At that time Mr Walsh was the headmaster. Infant's teacher was Mother Evereldus (not sure how it is spelt) but we called her Mother 'even-elp-us', behind her back. We didn't have a uniform in those days, but we infants wore smocks over our clothes, pink for the girls and blue for the boys - and we were given rusks at break time with our bottle of milk. I also remember Miss Hastier who wore a beautiful heavy bracelet with blue stones - if you misbehaved, she made a great drama out of removing it before smacking the back of your hand. Everyone's favourtite teacher was Mr Scanlon or 'scallywags'. If you misbehaved he gave you a 'wiggins' - pulling at the short hair at the side of your head. But he was full of fun, he played Mozart when we had quiet reading time, trying to instil a bit of culture no doubt, and I remember one winter, he threw a bucket of water into the playground so that when it froze we children could slide on it - no worries about health and safety then He worked hard to give us all a good education and 30 of us in his class passed the 11+, not bad for an area where the pass rate was 12% - so a lot of us owe him a lot.

The best way to know is to simply ask parents of children who go there- if you are interested i recommend to talk to parents - you will simply discover what a wonderful school this is.

I always hated my schools, but my little brother was very happy at this one. Although it is Church of England, the children are taught about different religions from the start, and the pupils are from a big mix of countries, cultures and backgrounds. The only drawback is the lack of space. It is a small, friendly school with a family feeling to it. But the playground is tiny though well equipped. What is particularly cool about this school, though, is its survival flanked by two peep shows in the heart of Soho. Be prepared to see bruised and drugged looking teenage girls slinking and smoking outside the dodgy doorways, but never fear! The friendly neighbourhood bobbies always stand outside the gate at home time to ensure all is well. A local policeman also escorts the children and teachers to church for Christmas shows and whatever whatnots people get up to in those places. One day when my brother was seven a gunman escaped from a neighbouring brothel and took refuge on the school roof, but all was well as while armed police took over the school walls the teachers took the children for a picnic in the safe haven of nearby St James' Park. A lovely, friendly school - just make sure you're prepared for all those birds and bees conversations early on as it's pretty full on outside the school gates.

I too am from the United States and I have nothing but admiration for the school where my four nieces and nephews have been blessed with amazing educations. IN fact, I have been so impressed that over the years I recommended it to other Americans moving to London for work. Two couples who have had their children there (family of five and four) were very happy. In fact, one family left London to return to the US and missed the school so much that they returned to UK. All of those children are grown now and are in excellent schools, two of them at Westminster. By the way, all but two of the eight children I personally know are all...wait for it...BOYS. In addition, I have had the true pleasure of watching several Heathside Preparatory School musical concerts over the years and seen those children perform admirably. All are supported so beautifully by the teachers that you can see the children's confidence emerge more and more as they play solo or in concert. It is very moving.
