We were long time customers at Japan Auto Works and loved going to Kenzo for the past 10 years, but Kenzo retired and the level of care with the new owners has not been the same. We started searching for a new mechanic for our 97 Toyota Forerunner and stumbled upon Byron at Ross Valley Auto Repair. We just needed a diagnostic at first to identify why we weren't passing smog. Byron is super knowledgeable with Toyotas and got us fixed right up for cheaper than I was expecting. We have gone back now to do a lot of the deferred maintenance on the vehicle and decided to finally upgrade the suspension and add a 7 pin trailer harness brake controller for pulling a dump trailer. I got the car back today and I absolutely love the new ride. I couldn't be happier with the level of service and quality of work. Often in Marin you get barely mock concern for an older vehicle but there is nothing wrong with our Toyota and now it rides better than it has in years. Our 2006 Jeep Wrangler unlimited had an engine problem that other great mechanics were puzzled about and did their best to resolve but the problems came back. After replacing a number of parts that the diagnostics indicated caused the problem, the problem persisted. One part that continued to pop up was the camshaft sensor( its like a distributor in older cars). It was replaced by one of our other long time favorite mechanics. He said get another opinion. Our son recommended we take it to Byron who had many years of experience at Parker Jeep. Byron tested and like a "horse whisperer " he swapped out the new sensor for one in the garage. He road tested and engine light off. Second was the notorious Jeep "death wobble ", parts had been replaced and the wobble would recur. He replaced a suspension part and showed us how the bushing was worn. My other mechanics and a front end guy had tightened, replaced a stabilizer, new tires, alignments and after a while death wobble again. It was one part not replaced and had never been removed to inspect. Now Death wobble gone. Some other needed repairs were added. After 2 days of work, both problems resolved. It has been about a month since the work and all is great. I held off in the review to see if the two problems fixed were actually fixed. Great. Byron is down to earth. Tells you with precision what he recommends and why. His pricing is very reasonable . Big trust in Byron! He also works in all cars. Call him and talk about your issues. He will ascertain the potential cause as you discuss the problem. Byron doesn't just rely on the code reader. He knows mechanics and goes beyond relying only on the codes. My wife and I owned a 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and found Ross Valley 4x4 on Yelp. I have to say that Rick (he is Ross Valley 4x4) is a great Jeep mechanic who tells it like it is. It's rare that you can find a mechanic that not only has the expertise, but is also trustworthy - Rick is both. We've since have sold the Jeep to a proud new owner, but we went to Rick for about 8 months of the 2 years we owned the vehicle. Rick just fixed CheroTank from 3,000 miles away. Tank now lives at the tip end of Cape Cod and we have a terrific local mechanic but no one guy can be an expert on every make, model and year of vehicle. Tank was screwing up. Awful noises to the point where nobody would ride in it. I asked Pat, the great local tech, if he'd mind talking to Rick and together they figured out that someone (a late and not lamented Jeep dealer in downtown SF) had put the wrong fluid in the transfer case. I had him complete some work on my Audi w5 that the Audi dealership recommended I take care of, except they wanted to charge me a ridiculous amount of $$ for the job. Byron, got the job done for half the price and twice the speed. A couple of weeks after that, the car broke down on my way to work and I called him in a panic. It's getting old. He said I could have it towed to his garage that morning. He diagnosed the problem ( fuel injectors drama) and had it fixed and back to me in a day. I have been bringing my Jeep here for 4 years and each time his fairness in repair has been exceptional. I have no fear bringing my Jeep in for diagnosis as I have learned Rick will actually work to find ways to save me money on repairs. Case in point, I have a known Jeep problem with my reverse light switch. Obviously these lights are important and Rick did let me know if the switch completely dies my Jeep will not start so Rick did some research and has found away to rebuild the switch versus ordering a $ 350 part. Its saving me a lot of money. This is the car I drive my 5 year old around in and he always make sure my vehicle is in tip top shape. I refer everyone here and you owe it to yourself to have him take a look if you are considering repairs. He deserves the highest possible rating for Auto service. read more

I agree with all the other 5 star reviews that Rick has received. I've brought my Jeeps to him for over 15 years now. I hate it when I have to get a repair, or even an oil change, anywhere else! I have absolute confidence in Rick's ability to diagnose and repair any Jeep problem. He knows every model's and year's idiosyncrasies. He knows what has to be repaired before you drive another foot, and he also knows what's not worth it. If something is real expensive, he is very helpful deciding whether or not it's worth making the investment. If I were buying a new car, I would seriously consider buying a Jeep so that I could have Rick as my mechanic, even if I really wanted to get a different make of car. When I go on long trips, I know that I can call Rick if I ever have a problem, from wherever I am, and he'll have the most practical advice about what to do. If you have any sound or symptom coming from your Jeep, drop in to Rick's garage and ask what it is. Sometimes they indicate a risk to your engine or safety that you don't want to take; other times they can wait to be repaired. It is quite wonderful and so very rare to have such complete confidence in a mechanic, or any service provider.
