It was started in 1949 and unveiled on 27/07/1951.I know this because I was there as a young boy. It was donated by Nancy Price, who lived locally, supported by Members of The Peoples Theatre, London. When first opened it had a bubbling water supply with a drinking pool for the birds. There were two carved pidgeon statues but, sadly, these got stolen. The material is Forest of Dean stone, with incut black lettering, stating "In memory of Warrior Birds who gave their lives on Active Service 1939 1945 and for the use and pleasure of living birds. I went back the other day.it is now fenced off and padlocked, (though I managed to gain entry) and found no bubbling brook, no drinking pool and all overgrown!! So sad.glad I had the happy days of youth to remember it all.

It honours the Fallen during the South African War 1899 1902. It is a polished obelisk of red/grey granite with sans-serif lettering. It faces South and has a semi circle of flag poles to the rear. Interestingly, Private Wiliiam Cooper's name is carved here. He fought at Rorke's Drift against the Zulus in 1879
