The layout is a bit disjointed as another reviewer mentioned, but the fourth floor is typically where our family spends the most of its time, so not too much of an issue for us. I have also worked remotely in the library on days when my offices were closed and it was a nice quiet place to get my work done -- that is, up until around 3 p.m. or so when teenagers pop in and are a bit louder. Another really great thing to know about our library is that they house a "library of things" where you can check out random things like a metal detectors, bolt charger, karaoke machine, label maker, telescope, binoculars, and much more.

I guess they really wanted every to know that the town is indeed right on the ocean. The library was completed in 1887 and is built from New England ashlar stone. Designed by the famous New York architect, Charles Makim, it is a wonderful and lovely library that has hardly changed during the decades. A children's room was added in 1965 and some renovations done in 2005 to bring it into the 21st century, but most of the library still looks, feels and probably even smells like it did when it was built. A relatively small library, it's certainly not a place to find some obscure tome or do some serious research. It is a great place to relax and enjoy the anachronistic ambiance and décor. All kinds of cool paintings, sculptures, lighting and woodwork all over the place. Everyone here is friendly and talkative and it's as much as a meeting house as it is a library. Small, cramped, and difficult to walk in places upstairs, there are books and stuff placed where ever there is room. A very, very cool and unique library, one that seems so right for a quaint and odd little town called Manchester By-The-Sea.

When I came through the front door on my third visit a librarian recognized me and asked if I had picked up the two books that had come in. She went to the hold shelf and picked out my name. I was shocked that she not only remembered my face, but my name after one interaction. Experiences like this reinforce our decision to move to Gloucester.

The…read moreonly reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because it is very small, and therefore has a smaller selection of books than the Main Branch in Peabody, but I think the good far outweighs the bad here. The building was recently renovated and looks beautiful. It is a one-room library with a circulation desk, a childrens department, a fiction and non-fiction section and a reference/periodical area. What makes this library outstanding is it's staff. They are always willing to bend over backwards to accommodate their patrons. They are never condescending and they go the extra mile to get their patrons what they want. The beauty of the library system around here is that if your home library doesn't carry what you're looking for, they can usually order it from somewhere else, and having been numerous times to all 3 libraries in Peabody, I can say with assurance that the South Branch staff works harder than any of the others for their patrons and they always do it with a smile on their face.

On the other side of Essex Street from the Salem Public Library is the Salem Athenaeum. For the…read moreenjoyment of the tourist as well as the Salem resident is this beautiful building located within the McIntire Historic District. Usually in front of the building is a posting of whatever is current within the Athenaeum. Upon entering the building, immediately to the right, before the central corridor, is the room dedicated to current exhibits. When I was visiting last May, there was a display of 1st edition copies of Mark Twain books from the collection. Further into the Athenaeum is found the shelves of new books for subscribers. It is very interesting to compare this set of books with the new books across the street at the public library. I remember hearing the sounds of Mandarin emanating from the second floor--an example of an activity taking place at the Athenaeum. A glimpse of the lovely rear garden is visible from within the Athenaeum. If you are lucky to be walking in front of this building during open hours, take advantage of the opportunity to spend time inside.

I met a few of the staff while there, they were pleasant and helpful. I discovered they have been doing renovations and have moved furniture, including the circulation desk. It looks great and appears more user friendly. The renovation included the addition of a small workspace. It's not the greatest, but it's certainly adequate to be able to do work there. My experience was great. The staff was very pleasant and helpful and it was nice to be able to go to the library in my hometown. I also appreciated that I didn't have to pay for parking like I do in NBPT. As I have used many local libraries Amesbury doesn't hold up. I recommend Amesbury look to build a new library. Check out Salisbury, Merrimac and Newburyport libraries, they are amazing. Please Amesbury- consider building a modern library.

I usually use their website and request the books to be put on hold that I want. They can send you an email or text when the book arrives which is very convenient!
