There is also a succulent garden with species from around the world. A palm house. Giant green spaces for picnics, trails around the park and along the water for runners and walkers. Benches to rest all along the park. Let me repeat, this is a huge park. By the waterfront you have a great view of the harbor bridge as well as the opera house. There is a small visitor center, a snack bar restaurant and also a fine dining restaurant. Various tours are offered if you feel like learning more about the plants or the birds or the history. Upon returning from Taronga Zoo to Sydney Harbor's Circular Quay, we continued our sightseeing and exercise at the Royal Botanic Gardens, which is adjacent to the Sydney Opera House. We walked along its well-paved, well-maintained waterfront pathways and into a few of the 15 various themed areas (Australian Rain Forest, Rose Garden, The Calyx, Fernery, Palace Garden, and Australian native collection). These gardens offered stunning views, a peaceful oasis, self-guided tours, and free Wi-Fi. Also, the Royal Botanic Gardens is home to the National Herbarium of New South Wales, which plays a leading scientific role. It took us several hours to complete our walk because we stopped several times to admire the various trees, plants, and flowers in different areas, before my allergies told me to exit the gardens. But, we saw many visitors and residents, families, couples, or singles making their day in the gardens through exercise or relaxation. Along the way, we also saw several well-dressed couples staging their wedding photos with professional photographers, the gardens providing beautiful, natural backdrops. We'd love to return to complete admiring the garden grounds, but I'll make sure to take medication before going, as I didn't realize how sensitive I would be to the native plants, trees, and flowers. read more

This garden was right across the street from the hotel where we were staying and we had some time to kill so why not enjoy the fresh air and colorful flowers. My fav was the rose garden. We were just in NZ and none of their roses were blooming but they were in full force in Sydney. So beautiful. Lots of views of the bays and harbors from the garden. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens the second time I attempted it, lol. The first time I was rained on and thus skipped most of it. I'm glad I was able to make it back another day. The lush beauty of the botanical gardens is unmatched. And the plants are well taken care of. I particularly liked the succulents garden. I wanted to touch all of those plants but didn't of course. Most of those succulents are spiky anyway! Then the gardens go on forever and you can actually take a lovely walk through them that ends at the opera house. It was likely the most wonderful stroll I've had in my whole life! It's nothing but scenic, amazing views. This may be my favorite part of Sydney, and it's all free! read more

I highly recommend booking a free Guided Walk of the Royal Botanic Gardens when visiting Sydney! The Guided Walk lasts about 1.5 hours and are volunteer based. The meet up location for the start of the tour is at The Garden Shop and donations are accepted there. We had the pleasure of having Cathy as our guide. She was so sweet and knowledgeable. Walking around the Royal Botanic Gardens was beautiful, but the amount of information I learned about the history of the gardens and interesting facts I'd probably only hear from the guide made the experience even more enjoyable. Cathy also made learning about botany super fun and interactive! Aside from the tour, The Royal Botanic Gardens is free to enter during normal business hours and makes for a nice peaceful stroll after a long day in the city. read more

Royal Botanic gardens is a must-see if you're visiting Sydney and it's the oldest botanic garden in Australia. The garden opens quite early so head here prior to going to the Opera house, which is about 10 min walk. There's plenty of trees and plants to admire and the views are amayzazing. The paths are paved and there's benches to sit and relax, or have a picnic on the lawn. I came here with my mom and she stopped multiple times to snap photos of the plants, which have little posts that indicate what they are. Plants from all over the world are here. Flowers, palms, succulents, ferns and much more. You can easily spend 2 hours walking around viewing the greenery and taking in all the views. You'll see cockatoos flying around in their flock and green parrots chillin. Further into the gardens you can find a cafe to grab coffee, tea and food and use the restroom. It's a small trek to get to the viewpoint/overlook of the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge but the views are worth it. Just keep it mind the sun will beam down on you so wear so good sunscreen so you don't burn and use an umbrella. Overall, I enjoyed wondering around the gardens and look at all the plants and trees they had. I would definitely come here again for a picnic to max and relax. It's located on 15 hectares (a bit over 37 acres) of land on the edge of Sydney Harbour and is home to more than 27,000 plants from around the world. Australia has approximately 24,000 species of plants, 87 per cent of which can be found nowhere else. With climate change, habitat loss and the extinction crisis, the garden is part of an effort to conserve plant species and protect life that depends on them. It's a scientific treasure! Nothing like waking up too early on your first day in Sydney. Nothing is open except the Botanical Gardens. Perfect. It was on my list and what better way to start the day. There several entry gates all around the 74 acre park that was established in 1816, the oldest botanic garden and scientific institution in Australia. It is open every day of the year and access is free. I entered through the Government House gate and wandered the paved trails along the Greenway Terrace, Herb Garden, the Dragon Tree Lawn, and Twin Ponds to Farm Cove. Following the shoreline to Queen Elizabeth II Gate. Here you can enter the back of the Sydney Opera House. Coming back into the park I headed to the Waterlily Pond, Amphitheater Lawn, Australian Native Plant Garden, making my way to Victoria Lodge and Gate. Following the inside trail to Bicentenary Garden, Lion Gate, Succulent Garden, Maiden Pavilion, Begonias, site of the First Farm, Wollemi Pine, and the Sydney Fernery to the Woolloomooloo Gate. This exits to the Art Gallery of NSW. There's so much plant and animal life to see. Most of the plants or gardens are well labeled. Lots of morning joggers, the occasional tour group, and I like me the solo wanderer just out enjoying the nature and warm sunny morning. The trees in this garden are huge and lush and there are lots and lots of nice, shady spots and even some lizards. You can find tons of Australian ibises wandering about and parrots flying in the trees. This major botanical Garden located in the heart of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia opened in 1816. This garden is the oldest scientific institution in Australia and one of the most important historic botanical institutions in the world. The grounds are meticulously maintained. Flowers, shrubs & trees are colorful, unique and beautiful. Many runners & bikers followed the path along the waters edge. Many had blankets on the lawn & were picnicking. Trees were clearly marked & descriptions provided. There were many benches to sit & take in the surroundings. Paths were well marked with distances detailed by time & distance. If you come to Sydney, you simply must get to the Royal Botanical Gardens. The gorgeous gardens and harbor views are some of the best in the city. During the many long, long months of lockdowns, this was within my 5 km limit (yes, really, that was a thing down here) and we spent many hours in these gardens enjoying their beauty and serenity. A few things I love the most: -- The ferns! Find this on the map and go wander inside the "Fernery" filled with mist and wonder and gorgeous ferns of all varieties. You will feel like you are in another world. -- The giant Moreton Bay Fig trees with prehistoric looking roots. -- The water gardens filled with Lillies. -- The harbor views are some of the best in the entire city. Go early if you can, especially in the nicer weather. Take public transportation to avoid the parking situation. Finally, take a picnic and a blanket and enjoy a glorious afternoon here. read more

Nice leisure walk along well manicured lawns... there weren't too many flowers during my visit but it was still nice to take a nature walk that's not too far from other attractions (Sydney opera house is about 8-10 mins walk). A great (free) way to spend some time! The RBG were on the way from our Potts Point apartment to the CBD, so we found ourselves transversing them several times during our stay. It's a huge swath of land with both formal and informal landscapes. Paths are really well marked at crossroads and tell you the average walking time to specific destinations. We visited in spring and saw some absolutely beautiful displays (too late for cherry blossoms though). They do a nice job with labeling plants and trees as well. Keep your eyes open for lots of birds too - we saw tons of colorful lorikeets, noisy cockatiels and of course the ever present ibises and turkeys. I even caught a very brief glimpse of s tree possum. read more

I spent a lot of time in these gardens in my week in Sydney. First they are right there downtown by all the touristy stuff. AND they are a respite from the crowds and urban environment. Plus the are HUGE. Loved the Pollination exhibit. And all the trees and the random birds. I enjoyed standing in the middle of a clump of bamboo and listening to the wind as it rattled through. There are so many different areas and so much to see! I do think my favorite thing might have been all the adults in professional wear who were napping under trees on their lunch breaks. Okay so I love nature and I love these gardens. Grab a map because they're HUGE. The must-sees for me are 1. The eels in the pond! What? Where did they come from? Why do they come back? WHY DO THEY STOP AND STARE YOU IN THE EYES? 2. The cockatoos. A pack of wild (but tagged) cockatoos hang out and wait for visitors to feed them. Friendly birds, but they have talons/claws. So if you feed them, they WILL land on you - wear long sleeves. 3. A stunning view of the opera house. No matter the time of day. 4. Bamboo forests. When the wind blows the bamboo sounds like it's going to shatter. I found it fascinating. Mrs. Macquarie's chair is overrated to me, but it's a fun photo opp for those who want to see it. A stone throne is kind of cool. Plan to spend a couple hours exploring and seeing what beautiful things you can find! read more

The botanical gardens provided for a nice little walk for an hour or so, but the signage is so unhelpful. They should work to make them less ambiguous, because a lot of them point in one direction, and then you follow, and then you're confused because either the path twists and turns or there aren't more signs telling you how to get to where you want to go. Anyway, the lake was the highlight for me. I checked out the fern gully, the rose pavilion, Long Island, and the herbarium, but they were all kind of a letdown. Wish I got to see some flowers. Maybe March isn't the time to go here. read more

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney is a site that I would give 6 stars for if Yelp allowed this. This garden/park located next to the Sydney Opera House and on the shores of Sydney Harbour is absolutely gorgeous. I visited last May and was amazed at how huge and beautiful this park was. Since it is so large, there are plenty of places to lay on the grass here when the weather is nice. It is the perfect place to have a picnic in the city. Throughout the gardens are many varieties of plants and flowers. The gardens also serve as a habitat for native Australian birds. If you are feeling peckish, the gardens has a couple eateries including a cafe and a restaurant. And if you happen to visit in late May or early June, make sure to check out the Vivid light festival displays here. Since it is right next to the Sydney Opera House, it makes for a great place to take a picture by the water at with the Sydney Opera House serving as a backdrop. And the best thing about this spot is that it is free which I am incredulous about. It is nice that the citizens of Sydney have this park to enjoy year-round. read more

Trip taken in the TBC, aka the "Times Before Covid": The tour bus dropped us off in the gardens for a great view of the Sydney skyline including a twofer, the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbor Bridge. I enjoyed the trip with Colette Vacations. There were lots of advantages to having a travel company take care of all travel necessities like booking rooms, transportation, transfers, admission, and most meals. However, this trip also reminded me of why I like independent travel. All time, even free time, on a packaged tour is accounted for. You can go off script but making your fellow travelers wait while you decide between this tchotchke or that is pretty rude and uncivilized. I often felt rushed on this trip, as we were hustled from one destination to the next. We just had time for some photos then back on the bus. Opera House? Check. Bondi Beach? Oh, here we go. As we zip by on the bus. And there it goes. Check. I appreciate seeing all these sites but I also wanted to experience them, not just check them off the list. I wanted to explore the gardens but we didn't have time. I ended up not even buying the group photo because while it had a nice cityscape in the background, I looked awful. The camera caught me mid blink. To be fair, we were given choices. My sister chose to hike up Harbor Bridge. Our hotel was located between Darling Harbor and Paddy's Market so I decided to walk around and explore the area instead. But I didn't want to have to make a choice. If I skipped an activity, I felt like I was missing out. I wanted to do it all. In the end, I decided to think of this trip merely as an introduction to Australia. I hope to return someday and take more time to explore on my own, not just zip by on a bus. read more

This review should be self-explanatory. It's a HUGE garden that could take days, weeks, or longer to truly appreciate. Not only is it beautiful to look at, there are multiple educational displays. There are sections on herbs and medicinal uses of plants. There is a section for African plants. There is an aboriginal section. A tropical section. They even have a section for experimental plants from other countries/regions to see how they will do in Sydney. The gardens really try to help people see how plants affect their world. There are multiple benches to sit on along walkways, ponds, and fountains. Many birds to enjoy. Also a path along the harbor to enjoy. Splendid. These gardens are a nice respite from the busyness of the city. It has lots of grassy areas (perfect for picnicking), views of the harbour, flowers/flora, and is home to the governor's house! It is also host to The Calyx, an instagrammable greenhouse where Venus fly traps and a flower wall lies. Restrooms are nicely spread out and the walking paths are easy to walk on.
