If you're into pottery, tableware, or anything to do with fine china, Royal Delft is an absolute must! The museum has such a rich and fascinating history, and it's the perfect size to explore without feeling like you're in a marathon. You'll learn all about how their iconic Delft pottery is made, and it's honestly so cool to see it all come to life. Before visiting, I bought both the museum ticket and their high tea package in advance on their website -- super easy and totally worth it. The bonus? On our way there (we took the tram from Den Haag), we accidentally stumbled upon the actual spot that inspired Vermeer's "View of Delft." There's even a replica of the painting right there so you can compare it to the real view Vermeer saw back in the day. How amazing is that?? Such a serendipidous find that made our Delft experience even better. By the time we got to the museum, we were--surprise, surprise--already hungry . We showed up way too early for our high tea reservation, but the staff was so kind and told us to come back in 15 minutes while they set up a table for us. Perfect excuse to "tour" the gift shop! And wow, that gift shop is dangerous for anyone with limited luggage space. They have everything -- vases, Christmas ornaments, gorgeous tableware, adorable Miffy collections, and all sorts of Delft blue goodies. I wanted to buy everything. But alas, since this was near the end of our trip (and I still had a week in Amsterdam to go), I had to restrain myself. Next time, though? I'm coming back for the tulip vases. Sooooo pretty. And the Miffy figurines. And the Dutch houses. Ugh, the list goes on! Once I finished my ooh-ing and aah-ing, we headed back to the café for high tea, and our table was ready. The staff was so lovely -- they explained every sweet and savory treat on our tiered tray, and the tea selection was solid. The food itself? About a 3 out of 5 if we're grading just on taste. It's not like a fancy hotel afternoon tea, but it was perfectly nice. Plus, the atmosphere makes up for it -- there's a beautiful garden where you can sit outside, or cozy indoor seating with big windows looking out. We chose inside (it was too chilly for us desert people ). After tea, we did our self-guided tour through the museum and factory area, where you can actually watch artisans painting and crafting pottery by hand. It's mesmerizing! I had no idea that Delftware originally took major inspiration from Chinese porcelain -- especially the classic blue-and-white style. They even show side-by-side examples of early Dutch copies and the original Chinese pieces, and you can really see how the Dutch designs evolved over time into something uniquely their own. All in all, Royal Delft is 100% worth visiting. The museum is fascinating, the staff is warm and welcoming, and the café is a lovely spot to rest your feet (high tea optional, but fun if you have time). Prices were pretty reasonable too -- high tea was €63 (about $73 USD) for two people, and museum tickets were €34 (around $40 USD) for two. Known for the iconic blue & white floral dishware, Royal Delft has been making high-quality items of all kinds since 1653. This is the only surviving factory left out of 32! We stopped here as part of a bus tour from Amsterdam. We were rushed through the factory tour, which was interesting, and we were shown briefly how this earthenware is made and the different methods used to decorate it. Delft uses cobalt oxide which, when painted or transferred on, is a dark gray / black color, but when it is baked in the kiln, that's when it turns blue! We were able go through the comprehensive yet not exhausting museum portion of the factory on our own, and it was interesting to see the range and variety of Royal Delft creations. Royal Delft has survived for over 400 years because of their ability to adapt to current trends. The shop is huge and pricey. However, if this is your jam, by all means, have at it. (Going into Delft offers some slightly better deals on Royal Delft & other Delft brands.) Overall, this is a good experience if you are in the area, but for me, it wouldn't necessarily have been something I'd have gone out of my way to see if it wasn't a part of this tour "deal." Tickets are 17.50 Euros. There is a cute cafe called Brasserie 1653 on site and a lovely garden as well. If you are staying in the Delft area, the museum offers different activities such as painting your own figurine which you may find worthwhile. Peace. read more

As part of our bike and boat tour we biked into Delft where a tour of the famous pottery factory was given. The introductory movie was helpful in understanding the history and the process for making this distinctive china/tiles/pottery. The displays and the audio tour that followed gave even more information if you are really interested in the details. It was more than I needed to know. I was hoping to see a bit more action in the factory but not much was going on. The shop at then end was stunning, actually the prices were stunning! I had no idea how expensive these products are - wow! Worth the stop for this important piece of Dutch culture. read more

Classic touristy trap but still worth visiting because you are in Delft! You can really walk here from the train station. It's not the closest walk but a good 15 minutes along a beautiful canal. It's a fascinating display of the history of the Delft pottery and art work. I love Delft and everything related to it, so this is a good option if you have time on your trip to this beautiful city. read more

Arriving in Delft, our Globus tour stopped at a brick industrial building named De Porceleyne Fles (The Porcelain Jar). It is the home and manufactory of Royal Delft. The building also contains the Royal Delft Museum. A tour of the premises began with the Delft workshop where craftsmen were forming the pieces from clay, preparing them for painting, painting designs on the formed pieces and then glazing and firing them. (We sort of saw the process in reverse order.) The museum displays Delftware pieces old and new including a reproduction of Rembrandt's Night Watch in Delft tiles. Of course, there was also the opportunity to purchase Delftware. It was a most informative tour and I learned much about the production of Delftware. read more

I will be completely honest when I say I only went to Royal Delft because my mom wanted too. HOWEVER, I was presently surprised with the tour. You get to see real artists creating and designing the pieces. The audio your videos pretty much repeat what's on the plaques, so I didn't read many of them. I recommend a tour with a live guide and painting session. Inside this museum you'll see the delft blue paint that's renowned and both traditional and contemporary designs. You'll learn how art tiles are used to preserve legacies and moments. The best part of my experience was walking to the back to the studio to see a demonstration of how the plaster molds works and the bisque and glazed ceramic pieces. I don't know the cost because it was arranged by the student group I was going with! read more

Only July 19, 2017, while enroute to Amsterdam, I drove out-of-my-way expressly to visit Royal Delft. I admire delftware and looked forward to my visit based on the many positive reviews. On arrival, near 4pm, there was no one to be found at the tour desk. After waiting about, there was no one to greet me either. So, given conclusion that no more tours were available that day, I ventured alone in search of the gift shop, to make the best of it. Along the way, I passed through a cafe and the workshop without greeting or assistance from several employees. Once in the gift shop, I observed three employees. I enjoyed browsing while they assisted my fellow shoppers though it began to seem odd that I was not also being helped. I entered the custom order area to get information and did so with its lights off (the door was open) and without anyone coming to my attention - twice (I had figured that the first time was a fluke, but no). I tried to get the attention of a gentleman who worked there, but instead watched him pass me by to help other guests. As the other two employees soon seemed to vanish, I approached the gentleman again, directly after he concluded his order with expectation that they would soon close. He noted that they had already closed, but apologized and accepted my modestly large order (including master work). Given the size and value of my order, he offered their shipping service (21% DHL shipping + 21% insurance) for which I happily paid based on his explanation that it would arrive at my USA-based residence within 4-5 weeks. After 6 weeks, I contacted customer service to inquire as to my order status. With limited apology, I was informed that the items had not yet shipped and...given the 4-5 week shipping expectation, they were only 1 week behind; so, I should not be concerned, expect any discount, or receive expedited shipping. There should be some obvious arithmetic flaws there; but, for 42% surcharge I believe it fair expectation that in the event of "shipping delays" first brought to their attention by a customer, one might expect a bit more care than "oops". Worse, when asked for any other consideration given that it would end up to be 7-weeks before I received my items, their Duty Manager, Ms. van Steenbergen, deemed it best to not reply at all. Lessons Learned: 1. Save Royal Delft for the tour groups 2. ...and stay in Amsterdam as I was unable to recognize savings from buying direct and would assume the same would apply to others 3. ...or go to Gouda where there's more to see, still plenty of delftware, AND cheese 4. ...or, if you really have to go: arrive early, lower your expectations and skip the "tourist trap" of a gift shop where their all too pleased to be selling refrigerator magnets to bother with you. Certainly, at the very least, take whatever you buy with you as their "shipping department" is as of much quality as their customer service; little at all. read more

This museum is very close to TU Delft and it is beautiful inside and out. Great for a quick visit between work commitments. It was busy with tours and individual visitors. Entry is €13,50 or €8,50 for groups and students. The ladies at the front desk were very helpful, and the listening tour was great! Loved the variety at the shop too; they had a beautiful umbrella I regret not buying. They charge 10c for a plastic bag. read more

Royal Delft is a pretty good stop if you're looking for the iconic blue and white tin-glazed pottery. They also do tours and workshops giving you a really good look at the history of delftware. The shops have plenty of souvenirs to choose from. Lots of varied magnets and smaller trinkets at reasonable price points. Obviously, the much more grander items will be a much more grander prices. If it looks expensive... it probably is here. That said, it doesn't hurt to appreciate the fine details and the beauty of this pottery. Definitely not one to be missed if you're an aficionado of this type of pottery. read more

You actually get to see real workers making the pottery from start to finish. Of course the tour ends in the sales shop but getting there is pretty interesting. They have a cafe on site.
