I'd give this place 20 stars if I could. My 5 year old son and I did private lessons with Lee and Philippe. They were exceptional in every measurable capacity. Philippe (a pro surfer) took such great care of my son. I was pretty nervous for my son at first being out so far but he was never more than an arms reach away from him at any given time. Within 20 minutes of the lesson I was able to relax more. It was an absolute blast. Lee was funny and informative and an exceptional host. Top 5 best experiences of my entire life. Thank you again Lee and Philippe! You guys rock

10/10 recommend! I've never surfed in my life, nor am I very coordinated. I was able to get up and ride a wave a handful of times! Steve was the instructor and not only was he very knowledgeable, he was funny and friendly and defiantly made me feel super comfortable out on the water. The price is just right, very affordable and they give you everything you need. I had an amazing time and will definitely try again next time I'm here! Tip: sign up for the first class of the day... it's early but far less crowded than the mid-day classes. The photographer, Rick Larsen stands on the beach and gets all the action shots! After it's over, for $25, you get all the shots he took emailed to you. Making us look like pros out here!

My boyfriend and I booked surf lessons at the Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy on May 4th, 2022. Check in was super quick, they even had a photographer offering to take photos of us during our lesson ($25/person), in my opinion, it's totally worth it. They provide water shoes, UV long sleeve top, and the board. Kayla was our instructor and she was amazing!! She coached us before we got in the water - water safety, where to stay in the water, how to stand on our board, dismount, speed up or slow down l, etc... she also gave continuous feedback/instructions when we were in the water, which was incredibly helpful. My boyfriend and I were able to ride 90% of the waves she set us up on. And cherry on top, she so friendly and was awesome person to hang with overall. Thank you for an incredible experience, we will definitely be back!

Earlier today I had the distinct pleasure of taking a surfing lesson with Rafa and it was an absolutely fantastic experience! Rafa is very knowledgeable, has the patience of a saint and overall was an excellent teacher. In addition, everyone that i interacted with at Royal Hawaiian was great. This is a very well run group that is dedicated to making their students successful and I would highly recommend this academy.

Aloha, my family just returned from Maui and wanted to share our experience that we had with Royal Hawaiian surf academy. As you know they did loose their shop in the fires in 2023 so they are doing in mobile. They are trying very hard to get the business back. They are great team and bottom line they make sure that you have fun and safe. If you are looking for surfing lesson in Lahaina area, give them and yourself a chance.

This place literally blew us out of the water! I'm in my 40's and thought it would be fun to try this with my super active teenagers. I never imagined I would get up, let alone on my first wave. I felt super ready and had such a great time. We were all smiles! I would recommend this anybody! Lee and Steve were the best! We were so spoiled!

Post-lesson enthusiasm

We loved our surfing experience so much; our kids came back the next day for more! We scheduled a private lesson (due to our son's age & their requirements) & semi-private lesson for my other son & husband. They all had the opportunity to take on multiple waves & had an incredible time. Ricky Larson captured amazing photographs during their time, while I took videos from the beach. When we asked our sons which experience from our trip they wanted to do one more time, they both said, surfing immediately! I called and requested Dreyson for our younger son's private lesson because he had been so great with him the day before. We lucked out & our older son was able to get a private lesson with Tavner (instead of his group lesson) because someone didn't show up. They had the best time, & we felt very safe having our children on the water with them. We could not recommend them more

Action shot!

My sons (16 & 18) had such an amazing experience with Royal Hawaiian. They did a two hour private lesson and the instructor had them up and surfing right away. They had so much fun and can't wait to do it again. The photographer got so many epic photos of them in action so we can relive the experience! We will definitely be coming back to Royal Hawaiian on our next visit. I highly recommend this company!

Had an amazing experience learning to surf at Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy. Our instructor JB was fantastic! Felt very comfortable with the safety rules and surfing steps before he took us into the water. I was able to get up on my second run- and it was smooth surfing from there. Great experience- would highly recommend!!

I come here regularly for equipment rental whenever I'm in Maui. The front desk guys, are always friendly and helpful and really treat you like family. On this visit they gave me a Kazuma board to use and it was amazing. I liked the board so much, I rented it a second time. No nonsense, competitive rental & lesson rates too! They recently moved from the old location on Prison Street to 505 Front and it is so much more convenient to the beach and I don't have to carry my board quite so far. Definitely the place to go for surfing or SUP lessons or equipment.

These guys were AWESOME!!! Love their vibe and they were so kind to our family of 3. We took our 7yo daughter surfing for the first time and she did a private lesson with T and he took great great care of her. He tried so hard to make our shy girl smile. He might've gotten a few teeth to show by the end of their session. We did a semi-private lesson for me and my husband and Josh was great and super encouraging. Would highly recommend this company and these specific instructors. Get the picture package it's totally worth it!!

From the initial communication and detailed information provided beforehand to the beautiful location and overall organization, everything was seamless and professional. Theo was an absolutely fantastic instructor. As a parent, I was nervous because my son had never surfed before, but Theo immediately put us at ease. He took the time to explain his approach, including why he wanted to start on smaller waves and ease my son into the experience rather than pushing too hard too fast. That thoughtful approach made all the difference. Theo was incredibly encouraging, motivating, and patient throughout the lesson. He paid close attention to my son's energy level and knew exactly when breaks were needed, which was especially important for a young child. He struck the perfect balance between building confidence and keeping the experience fun and positive. I was also extremely grateful for Theo's communication with us as parents. He kept us informed, answered our questions, and made us feel comfortable every step of the way. Overall, this was an outstanding experience, and I cannot recommend them enough!! If you're visiting and considering surf lessons, do it. In fact, I left wishing I had booked a lesson for myself as well! Thank you, Theo, for making my son's first surfing experience such a memorable and positive one.

LahAina Surf Shack has amazing instructors, and will get you into the right waves regardless of the conditions. Talvi and Gianna from LSS hosted me and my son at Guardrails last week. It was my son's first time surfing, and I asked him whether he wanted me to teach him myself or if he wanted to do a surf school. I have a whole life of experience in the ocean: swimming, surfing, diving. My son is not like that; I've never pressured him to swim or surf, and until the last year he hadn't been remotely interested. When he found out we were going to Maui he started asking relentlessly, albeit cautiously. He wanted to go with a surf school so he could learn from the pros. Okay let's go! I signed up several weeks in advance not knowing what the conditions would be like, and last Tuesday the waves were pretty small. I signed up for a time later in the day (midday, when it's usually windier). I explained to my son before we left our rental that morning that all of these different factors come into play in surfing: tide, wind, swell direction and interval, sea floor shape (bathymetry). When we got there, all of those things came into play, to create not ideal conditions. Several other surf schools had congregated around the general area of the break. Talvi and Gianna greeted us, and went over some practice catching a wave and standing up on the beach. In between moments Talvi, Gianna and I chatted about where we should head toward and we agreed that a little higher up the reef than others were sitting. Talvi helped my son get into the right spot over and over again, the few waves that came through he would line him up and get him onto the best waves, while the other camps were not in position to catch the few waves that were coming through. Gianna and I traded off the waves in between. Eventually the other camps went in and it was just the four of us. The tide swamped just about anything from breaking and we called it quits right on time. My son was fully exhausted, and Talvi had gotten him onto more than a handful of waves. My son was anxious and nervous to fall, so he didn't get up from his knees; but Talvi got him in the spot and he had the opportunity to stand up and helped guide him on the wave and kept him going the right direction and pulled him off the wave before he got washed up in the shore pound. To me, the most important part of the experience was to help curate a positive experience that doesn't push a new surfer into an experience that leaves them scared or afraid to do it again. That is what I wanted, and LahAina Surf Shop, Talvi and Gianna gave us that. It's the perfect spring board for him to go try more, just with me back home in California. That is a true gift! Thank you! It was genuinely wonderful to get to meet these two local surfers and amazing ambassadors of the sport. Would recommend to anyone.

He was so knowledgeable and helped my dad and I have fun on the water. He taught me how to paddle out smarter and the mentality to charge waves. My wife and I booked with Bully in 2025 and had an amazing time with his two professional staff instructors, 1:1. We just wrapped up our third lesson with Bully today--my wife and I rode so many waves it was a blast, and Bully made sure my mother-in-law crushed it during her first time surfing as well. Unlike chaotic group lessons, Bully brings a 1:1 approach where I feel safe and empowered out on the water. If you're traveling to Lahaina or Kaanapali booking a lesson with Bully Surf School is a must!

I would not hesitate to say Bully's is the best surf school in the world, not just Maui. Bully is an incredible teacher who shares his passion for surfing and respect for the ocean. Bully and his team of coaches made us all feel confident and safe in the water. Our entire family caught waves, including not just the kids, but the out of shape older ones too! Bully and his entire team of coaches (shout-out to Theo, James, and Ashley) were positive throughout the entire lesson. The energy was infectious. It was easy to try when we knew every attempt would be met with joy. It was incredibly helpful that even with a group lesson, we each had our own surf coach; we could each learn at our own paces and our coaches were able to give us personalized instruction. The equipment was top-of-the-line and really helped novice surfers like ourselves. The boards were light and forgiving and much better than typical foam boards. We can't wait to come back to Maui to take more lessons with Bully and his team. We made memories today that will last a lifetime and learned lessons that will remain in our hearts and guide us through life's challenges. Just breathe.... Both of my kids can surf, but my wife and I have never attempted it until we met Nick and his lovely family. Communication was great, Nick is a *TRUE* local to Lana'i, and he took us to a spot that's a 45 min drive from Lana'i city to a remote beach on the north east end of the island. Nick had all of the equipment for us to try, and both my wife and I were able to get up with Nick's help. We really enjoyed our time with Nick and I would highly recommend this. They only reason I can't give this 5* is that it was a bit on the pricey side after seeing the cost of surf lessons on other islands, but we were anxious to surf and still had a great time!

That is where Nick came to the rescue! We hired him to take my husband and daughter surfing and it was the best thing we did our entire time on Lana'i. We rented a jeep for the day at the Four Seasons where we were staying, met Nick and Kawai in Lana'i City, then caravanned to the other side of the island to Lopa Beach. It's a trek on an unpaved road, but it is beautiful and gives you the opportunity to see the north side of Lana'i and its stunning views. Surfing: Lopa Beach was empty and we were the only ones there. Incredible! The waves were absolutely perfect for beginners and were consistent. So many waves to catch over and over again that landed on a soft, sandy beach. Nick and Kawai brought the right boards, rash guards, and booties and gave all the right instructions to get my husband and daughter up and surfing on practically every wave they tried to catch. It is clear that Nick is an expert on not just surfing, but specifically surfing on Lana'i. The added bonus was having Kawai there, as my daughter absolutely loves surfing with and getting some surf tips from female surfers. The history lesson: Beyond just surfing, Nick and Kawai are absolute gems to talk to about the history of Lana'i and all of Hawai'i. As natives of Hawai'i, they have an incredible amount of information on the history of everything that's ever happened there. It's wonderful to not just learn so much about the state we love to vacation in, but to find people so passionate about Hawai'i culture and its history. Please listen and learn from them, not just about surfing, but about all of Hawai'i. You will leave a better person and will find yourself feeling like you can truly hang out with Nick and Kawai in another life...that life where you move to Lana'i. ;) Do not hesitate -- book a lesson with them!
