There was an actor who played both a mayor and Elvis himself, and this actor came along and spoke with our table. He handed my daughter a piece of paper and asked her to do up a poster promoting his good qualities and essentially helping him to get elected as mayor. My daughter being a very artistic person was happy to comply. We thought he might actually come back for the poster and use it somewhere during the performance but he never did follow up on this. Seems like he did it just for a fun, interactive element but I think it would have been good if he'd actually followed up on it. It kind of left us hanging all evening, wondering if he'd come back for the poster. Aside from him, there was mainly one other server/actor who was attending to us throughout the evening. He was in costume and played along by putting on a voice fitting to the time and place that the story was set in, but he didn't seem to be an actual character in the play. Just a side actor meant to fulfill the so called interactive element. Food was decent but not stellar. It was a 3 course meal. We were fortunate enough to have gotten a bday discount on our tickets as well as being able to have our two daughters order from the kids menu even though they were both technically over the kids age limit. So...5 stars for the customer service that we received, even before attending this performance. A basket of bread and butter was placed on the table and we all got salad as our first course. My daughter ordered Mac n Cheese with some tater tots on the side for her main entree. It looked super filling but also very tempting. I sort of wished I could order some tater tots for myself! I ordered a Vegan Spinach Tofu lasagna for my own main entree. It wasn't bad but I think a slightly larger serving would have been preferred. I was eye my daughter's tater tots and Mac n Cheese both because they looked tasty and because I was slightly on the hungrier side with my lasagna not being nearly as hearty a serving as my daughter's kids meal! We all ordered chocolate cake for our dessert with mine being a Vegan chocolate cake. Oh, and for our drinks we ordered a jug of Shirley Temple. If everyone at your table is agreeable to Shirley Temple then I'd highly recommend getting a jug of it for the table instead of everyone ordering individual cups. The jug ended up being cheaper and much better value as we were able to get more than one serving per person with the jug. Aside from the fact that I think the performers could have interacted with us more, this was still a super fun evening. The music, dancing and drama were all very enjoyable. They also asked audience members who were celebrating birthdays to come up on stage (that included moi), and people celebrating anniversaries got to go up on stage as well. So...there was that for an interactive element. I got to go up and do a dance on stage. Basically, all us birthday people were imitating the dance steps of the actors in front of us. This was fun. Just that when I had read online about this being an interactive experience I had kind of envisioned the actors coming up to our dinner tables and having conversations with us. Coming up on stage to do a birthday dance though was quite a thrill, as was hearing the entire room gasp when I got asked my age and people were all shocked because it seemed everyone in the room thought I looked way younger than I really am! Not quite what I expected but still a most delightful experience that I would recommend for anyone looking for something fun and memorable to do in Calgary!

Set…read morein the heart of downtown, this 100 year old historic building still conveys its original pride in its golden leaf mouldings, the original theatre ceiling and original walls. Most of the architecture has been updated and the lobby area houses the sexy and sultry Velvet Restaurant. The main theatre is a jaw dropping thing to experience, from the catwalk you see an expansive area with rolling seats that can be set up as a classic theatre formation or can be set up against all four walls with the stage in the center. The hardwood floor is rich and dark and the brick wall is an interesting urban feel which could house really unique staging. The theatre was renovated by theatre diehard loyalists and you can tell the dedication that has been put into this venue as everything is so well taken care of. There is a killer mezzanine area, with a bar that presently has been popular for wine and scotch tasting events. The only criticism I would have is because of all the historic restoration they are not so open to hosting youth events there but it is understandable considering the fine details of the architecture. All in all the place is a superb location and akin to theatre spaces I have seen in New York City and Toronto, but it's not its grandness is all right here in Calgary.

They had Juno winning musicians masterfully creating the sound for this old film. I was blown away by the beauty and history of this theatre! I have since attended several events and loved them all. This theatre has heart and soul and artists to run it. It's an incredible space with more history and nooks and crannies that any other joint in our FINE City! I have 2 complaints but I think they're universal to theatres and event centre's in general; there need to be more ladies bathroom stalls or make all the bathrooms gender neutral. Second is that seats should be staggered so that you're looking over someone's shoulders and not into the back of someone tall's head.

What I love about the University Theatre is that it is intimate. It's tinier than other theatres, which means you're not going to be too far from the stage no matter where you sit. Since this theatre is on campus, it features a lot of events that showcase local talent and arts. The sound system, lighting and dressing rooms are comparable to other theatres in town, and tickets to attend shows here are normally extremely reasonably priced.

I purchased a couple of tickets for my sister and myself to a little production one night. The tickets weren't expensive at all - $25 for a couple hours of entertainment is definitely worth it. Even though I didn't get to experience any sort of paranormal activity I was thoroughly pleased with the whole evening. The play was interesting and appealing; the seating is limited, so therefore very intimate; and there was always the added excitement of having a run-in with a ghost. I'll probably head back to the Pumphouse Theatre the next time I'm in the mood for a play... or when I'm hoping for a good scare.

I suggest you make good use of said intermission and stretch your legs!! Also, the Pumphouse is tucked away off the beaten path meaning that no eateries are in the area. Do not expect to stop at a restaurant before the theatre if you only want to park once. No restaurants are theatre-adjacent.
