Jonathan was great and very friendly. We started with coffee. It was delish and fresh. For my meal I had the biscuits and gravy. It came with eggs, bacon, and a fried green tomato. Everything on this plate was absolutely delicious in flavor. The sausage gravy was one of the best I've ever had. Biscuit was airy and delish. This meal was made with love. The ambience here is casual. The food was generally good. I highly enjoyed the fried green tomatoes but wish they gave more in an order since they were really small. The breakfast tacos were in what appeared to be store bought flour tortilla (not great) so I ended up just eating the insides of the tacos. However,they were kind of bland and needed some seasoning. My friend who ordered the shrimp and grits enjoyed it thoroughly and my other friend said the fried chicken eggs benedict was lovely. The biscuits are fluffy and buttery so I highly recommend getting one to try. The amaretto iced coffee was a major favorite as was the blueberry lavender mimosa. The mimosa came in a full wine goblet rather than a more traditional champagne flute but not to worry because you can ask to take it to go if you can't finish it up there. I typically visit NoLA every September. There are lots and lots of great restaurants in and around the French Quarter to choose from, but the Ruby Slipper stays on the top of my list. We typically visit the location in the French Quarter, but since I visited 2 weeks after Ida this year, that location was closed. Yelp helped me identify that this location, just outside the Quarter was indeed still serving food. We walked the 4 blocks from Esplanade to find the restaurant tucked inside an old bank building. Because our visit was right after the hurricane, mostly locals were inside. The restaurant was unusually quiet and the menu was greatly reduced because shipments were still being affected. Still, the staff were all very friendly and great at communicating why things weren't quite "normal". I ordered the Blackstone Eggs Benedict and my friend got the Peacemaker, another version of eggs benedict. Both were delicious. Aside from the top notch brunch menu and boozy coffees or cocktails, it's really the people and the atmosphere that does it for me. The restaurant is really queer -- in a safe welcoming and celebratory kind of way. There were lots of Pride flags and t-shirts both for sale and on the servers. Many of the servers were a part of the LGBTQ community, as were many patrons. It's always nice to walk into spaces that exude queer joy. Our server was really friendly. He flirted back with my friend and even pulled up a chair for a bit to share some of his experience with the city during Ida. If I hadn't already been sold on the food and atmosphere, the story he shared about his company (the Ruby Slipper) would have done the trick. He explained that the ruby slipper has several locations. Four or five, I believe. The main location in the French quarter has a giant walk-in freezer. That seems to be the location where they store the majority of food for the restaurants. After the hurricane, the city was without power. If you don't have power, you can't keep food safe. The ruby slipper wanted to ensure that not only the food was used, but that their workers weren't left without hours and a paycheck. They invited their workers to help unload the freezer, and cook meals each day. The meals were then delivered to a free food location the city had established, to help those in need during the power outages and hurricane crisis. He shared that the first day they made over 150 Poboys. The next day they made gumbo which served over 100 people. They did this until all the food has been used. As if that weren't kind enough, they went a step beyond to ensure their workers were still paid. They offered everyone the opportunity to continue working inside the restaurant, at a flat hourly rate, doing deep cleaning. Our server was so grateful for those hours. He himself had been without power and taking cold showers for over a week. When looking to support a small, local business, it's stories like these that matter. The ruby slipper has a great atmosphere and serves some really delicious brunch foods, but it is the care and intention behind the company that make me sure I will visit the ruby slipper every single time I visit in New Orleans. read more

My friends and I dined here twice during our 4 day stay in NOLA. The food is absolutely delicious, but what really sets this place apart is the entire staff who works here. want to give a very special shout out to the man with dreads who buses the tables. I apologize if the description of his role is not accurate but that is what I observed him doing. Other than that, he made sure to verbally welcome each and every guest and thanked them for their time. On our second visit here, he remembered us and called us "fam". I made a comment to him about how his friendliness was admirable and he immediately told us that mental illness is a real thing and you never know what people are going through so that's what he keeps in mind whenever a customer walks through their doors. This comment has stuck with me and I think about it all the time when I'm at work or just going for a walk, running errands, etc. I couldn't find the right words to respond to him in that moment so I just want to acknowledge him in this space.
