1/5 We didn't mind the wait because friends talked about how nice the experience was just a hour before. We get seated and the server comes after 15 minutes to get our drink order. Half a hour later passes and I have my drink the person I'm with still didn't get their iced tea. I place my order for a Spanish omelette and it comes in about 20-25 minutes. I get that the kitchen is backed up but it's hard to forgive that the food came out cold. Reluctantly, I sent it back and waited another half hour for a Seafood Omelette to arrive. At this point, they said they could remake it. I asked them to take it off the bill and I would just get the check. At this point, I feel like I was being taken hostage because now I had to wait another 20 minutes to get the check. A lot of going back for forth for mediocre service and cold food. The least they could have done is comped the iced tea while I was waiting. I guess every dollar counts when business is bad. By the way, the manager came over and didn't have the wits about her to apologize. First of all do not be dissuaded if at first you cannot find the entrance to this clever venue for breakfast/brunch on Broad Street. On a Sunday morning following a windy, cold, 2024 Shamrockin Run New Orleans 5k race we were yearning for a warm spot, hot coffee and a delicious breakfast. Just know that the address of the location we visited is South Broad Street but the smart parking lot and entrance is just around the corner on Banks Street. Ruby Slipper Cafe was a highlight of this spring's culinary expedition to New Orleans from Houston. The waitstaff provided very amicable and prompt service. Accompanying my delicious cup of coffee was the "One Tomato, Two Tomato"; a friend green tomato and a grilled red tomato served over a biscuit with two perfectly poached eggs topped with a delicious hollandaise. The fresh crisp side salad with a nice refreshing surprise. We arrived by 9 am on a Sunday morning and had no trouble snagging a table. But by 10:30 the restaurant was filling up with tourists and locals with a wait line starting to form. This location pays homage to its neighbors who survived and rebuilt after Katrina and the fact that the building was formerly a union hall adds to the experience. If you are a breakfast person in New Orleans, try one of the Ruby Slipper Cafe locations. read more

We did get a little annoyed that we were not able to sit at the bar even though it was available, they wanted us to wait until we were next on the list to be able to use the bar to have brunch. Edit* (1/19/20) Upon moving to Broad St they immediately became my favorite location. I do have to fight with tourists now but once they began using the reservation app it's bearable. Plus you can play corn-hole on the lawn while waiting if that's your thing. It is very spacious and has varying types of seating including outdoor. They have changed a few things since writing my original review years ago (9/13/17). I prefer bar or the neighboring tables to it because I'm usually a Sunday brunch go-er and I like to have the option to watch 'sport-ball' while eating. Their drinksssss and their biscuitsss, as a wise woman once said, yum-o! Special of the day is usually pretty interesting too. They have something for everyone so don't be afraid to take a large group here. Service is always great. The kitchen staff doesn't ever seem to be affected about the volume of customers, they still crank out the orders super fast. I don't know what else to tell you besides Just Do It. read more

This is a must have in New Orleans for breakfast. There are a few located in the city--the French toast bites are crunchy and deliciously coated in cinnamon sugar. We came here right when we landed for breakfast, then came back right before our flight out! This was our favorite breakfast place we tried. The wait wasn't really long (about 10 minutes) and our food didn't take too long to come out. We tried the crawfish cake, blueberry lemon stuffed French toast, omelette, French toast bites, pancakes, and the bayou shrimp Benedict. The crawfish cake was seasoned great. The French toast was a bit sweet with all the flavorings all over it, and they could have done without the sprinkles, but it was still good. The sauce that was on the Benedict was to die for! Seasoned to perfection and I've never had a sauce so good! The omelette was seasoned so well and so good. The pancakes were light and fluffy and the French toast was super good too. I consider myself to be quite the brunch connoisseur, and Ruby Slipper Cafe was the PERFECT bruncH spot! While there was a wait for a table, the bartender called us over to sit right down at the bar area. He immediately took our drink orders and gave us his suggestions for brunch. The menu was very extensive, with something for all tastes. I ordered a Bloody Mary that was delicious and served with choice of flavored vodka and a skewer of goodies on top. The bartender talked very highly of their homemade biscuits, and they did not disappoint. I also had the eggs, bacon, grits, and a fried green tomato. I absolutely LOVED the ruby slipper. My boyfriend and I went before our Mardi Gras festivities and had a great time. We used Yelp to put our name on the waitlist about 15 minutes before we arrived and only waited 15 minutes once we got there. They had an outdoor courtyard with games like corn hole and Jenga, as well as drinks for while you wait. We ordered a drink and the server only filled our glasses half way. I am a bit embarrassed to admit that I live right down the street from Ruby Slipper in Mid-City and had NEVER BEEN HERE. We came in on a weekend, and it was PACKED. We knew this was likely, though, so we hung out with some drinks from their outdoor bar window - good stuff! The staff here is AWESOME, too. Just super friendly and amazing. We got in and sat at the bar, and ordered a pretty sweet feast. First, the Costa Rican - a delicious mix of eggs, salse, avocado, beans, and plantains that was amazingly tasty. The chorizo in this dish was killer, too. Super filling, highly recommended. Second, we tried the hot fried chicken sandwich. It was not too spicy (a little hotter would have been good with us, honestly) but the flavor was great. Fries were good, nothing super special. Huge sandwich, though! We got some beers, as well, and the "morning margarita" is a great, light drink, too. We now know why so many folks love this place! Although it was crowded, our service was prompt, our order was accurate, and our server delivered it to us with a smile. I had the Skinny Migas omelet, and so did my hubby. I would never guess that there was anything skinny about it. It was full of flavor, and was so satisfying. My daughter had the French toast batons, and goodness - they were delicious! The potatoes were pretty good--basic breakfast potatoes. My friend enjoyed her meal (she had some sort of fish option) but my supervisor did not (she had personalized avocado toast). The restaurant seemed nice and clean. It was slightly tight in the dining area we sat it but it's passable enough for wheelchairs and the like. Service was great. Fried green tomatoes were perfection. Spanish omelette with grits and goat cheese was made well, per my niece. It was all delicious, but the communication was a big factor. We sat at the table for over five minutes before a waitress approached us. I'm most certain the three people standing at the hostess podium could have done a better job with relaying to the waitress that another couple were in her section. The waitress though, Diana D., she was amazing! Polite, courteous, helpful, and even offered to address the bill because of the preparation of the food. Although this location has changed from the original renovated corner store location opened as New Orleans was recovering from Hurricane Katrina, Ruby Slipper continues to deliver innovative Cajun inspired breakfast foods with Southern warmth. The Ruby Slipper reference translates to the Spirit of New Orleans in post-Katrina recovery, in that "there's no place like home." In the spirit of Urban renewal, this location is also housed in a historically renovated building. Built in 1951, it was a carpenters union hall that had been empty post-Katrina. The renovation features permeable paving to help improve storm water drainage (and is much easier than the limited parking for the original location). You can sit outside on the patio or let the kids play games on the lawn as you wait for your breakfast. Too many delicious choices, but over the years.... Love the Eggs-traordinary benedicts. Usually go with The Peacemaker which is a mix and match of any two. Favorite is the Smoked Salmon Bennie with the caper and dill hollandaise, but the Corned Beef Bennie is great as well. The Chicken St. Charles is like a twist on Chicken and Waffles. Their French Toasts are so delicious. Our last one was stuffed with cheesecake. Who doesn't love dessert for breakfast? You can also get a "flight" of pancakes which is a perfect option for someone who can't decide what to choose. For omelets, our favorite is the hot-smoked salmon topped with dill hollandaise and flash fried capers. Tip--if you make omelets at home, take their "recipe" and use goat cheese. It is sooo good!
