The challenging part is knowing what this once 'was'... A tremendous stretch of shops, bars, retail... They still have shopping (The Bay recently closed, Nordstrom closed, Saks closed). This is a nice area with a large closed road where patrons can walk to dining and shopping all lined up along the road. There's a large plaza that's open where it appears they put on shows/events. There's also a mall with a huge food court offering plenty of dining options. read more

Rue Sainte-Catherine is the main street that runs east and west through downtown. This is also one of the bigger and busier street. There are many restaurants along this street. The street also cut through Quartier des Spectacles. The street is extra wide and certain sections of the street are not meant for cars to drive through. Rue Sainte-Catherine runs east-west through downtown Montreal. I was recently hanging out on Rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest. I didn't have a chance to go Est! There are a ton of stores. I managed to squeeze in Miniso, Best Buy, and Starbucks in on my last night in Montreal before heading to the Just For Laughs comedy festival. This festival shuts down a good chunk of this street. It was cool to walk along it and not deal with traffic, which can be atrocious! It's a good area to shop and dine. I had dinner at Biiru that evening, which is just off this street. It was fabulous. Before I left to drive back home, I visited the Royal Bank on this street. I liked that I simply walked a block from my hotel and had everything that I needed. Rue Sainte Catherine (St. Catherine St) is the main east-west street in Montreal. Most of the action I'd say is between Guy and St. Laurent. Along this stretch, you will find lots of stores and restaurants. The street reminds me a bit of Yonge Street in Toronto, but it's obviously not as long. St. Catherine between Guy and St. Laurent reminds me of Yonge St between Bloor and Wellington. Retailers are mostly big chains. Restaurants are a mix of chains and independents, but more of the former than the latter. The street is always busy, and at night it is full of loud drunk university kids. Also, since the legal drinking age in Quebec is 18, in the summer the street is filled with 18 year old American tourists, lol. St. Catherine is not my favourite street to take a stroll. I prefer wandering around on St. Laurent or Duluth or St. Paul, but it's where a lot of the action is, so depends on what you're looking for. read more

I mainly walked Rue Sainte-Catherine after seeing photos on Instagram of the Pink Balls which is in the Montréal Gay Village during the summer season. Seeing all of the photos online of it, I knew I had to see it in person during my one day in Montréal. I was pretty dumb because I somehow thought it was a short distance from my hotel (man was i wrong) I was staying at Delta Montréal and it was a good 6 km round trip (granted I wandered a little to take photographs of the art on the side of streets and buildings). Besides being a long walk, the display of the pink balls over Rue Sainte-Catherine is really unique and picturesque. The only downside was I would get a lot of people walking up to me talking to me in French - which I do not speak. Therefore I sort of got a little paranoid while walking because I was by myself and do not speak French. I didn't see many souvenir shops unfortunately and only spotted one along the Rue. Most of the road further down after you pass Quartier Des Spectacles - you come to an area surrounded by bars mainly and some restaurants which was nice to see along the route. Overall, I'd say it's worth to see the Pink Balls - then I'd see if you could head to Quartier Des Spectacles to see some music or what not since that was where most people were when I was in Montréal that day. read more

It is probably the worst time to shop on St-Catherine at the moment. There are insane amounts of construction so everything is closed and blocked. On a regular day though it's a nice walk and the selection of stores is ok. read more

This street goes from ghetto, to somewhat less ghetto, to high end shopping, to low end shopping, to red light district, to shopping, to ghetto, to arts, to ghetto, to some unknown stretch! Between one end to the other there are a bunch of restaurants scattered around. One night I was walking down the street with a friend and one of the guys working the strip club doors ran up to us to ask us to go up to their strip club. A guy working a couple of doors down at another strip club ran up to us and told us to skip the other guys club because all the girls have crabs. I burst out laughing but my friend...she was grossed out and ran off. You'll find the same type of stretches on most big city main streets like pan handlers, sketchy people, restaurants and shopping and Rue Sainte-Catherine is no different but you won't get anything like what I mentioned above! read more

It may not be Oxford Street or Carnaby Street, but its still someplace that if you like shopping you'll want to check out. For anyone else, it is a great central location where if you can find Rue Sainte-Catherine, you can find your way anyplace else in the city. That's what I used it for. Whilst I love shopping, these are the same stores that I can find anyplace else and so I used it more as a compass point to navigate the rest of the city. I did like that the portion from Rue Berri to Rue Papineau is shut down to vehicular traffic and so becomes a pedestrian mall with restaurant patios spilling out onto the street and festivals taking over the road. Make this one of your first stops in the city if you're a tourist and you'll be able to find your way around just fine! read more

I'm not sure I understand some of the negative reviews here. Rue St. Catherine is very walk-able and while it has your typical retail stores, the food selection here is amazing. You can access Centre-Eaton, a small Asian strip with Korean BBQ, sushi, dumplings, Chinese food and the like, Reuben's deli, Mister Steer, Juliette Chocolate, etc. What's great about this street is that the side streets such as Rue Peel, Rue Stanley, etc. all have their distinct identities as well. I think if you are looking for food options, this is the best street to go on. It's also fun because of the hustle and bustle. Personally, I love it. read more

A shopping and restuarant street which largely resembles every other in a Canadian city. Don't be shocked to see the same stores over and over, or the same chains blocks from eachother. However, as a traveller it was a handy reference point and an easy go to. Chances are if you have a shopping mall by you, you've got a better selection of stores selling items at prices that are cheaper than what you will find on Rue Sainte-Catherine. For all those that say this "attraction" is a must-see, I would suggest that you need to expand your horizons as this clearly falls into the "must-not" category of things to do while on vacation. This street is dirty, it smells (like garbage and urine), is somewhat depressing/run-down in parts and I certainly didn't travel all the way to Montreal to go shopping at Foot Locker, mobile phone outlets, pawn shops or whatever other stores I could find locally and without having to pay Montreal's 15% sales tax. Make no mistake; this is not Oxford Street in London or Newbury Street in Boston. Instead, Rue Sainte-Catherine is as unremarkable as it is underwhelming. I was told that St. Catherine St was the place to go for shopping so I headed down here to see what type of shopping Montreal had to offer. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in what I saw. There were the usual State stores such as H&M, Forever 21 and Aldo and then there are the Canadian stores such as The Bay, Roots, Jacob and Lululemon. I guess when I heard shopping area/district, I was expecting something like NYC's SoHo area, SF's Union Square area or Vancouver's Robson St. It is a main street where you can find people hanging out and meeting up, but a shopping area it is not. read more

The unavoidable main artery of Montreal. For the real experience, ignore everything west of St. Laurent. It's a fairly generic downtown strip with the same stores you find everywhere else. If you head east of St. Laurent, it's far more interesting. The sleazy vibe between St. Laurent and St. Denis is like pre-Giuliani Times Square where junkies, punks, and prostitutes still reign supreme. Anyone who, like myself, has some kind of misplaced and confused nostalgia for pre-gentrified and Disneyfied Midtown should check it out. Go while it's still there since they've been threatening to transform the area into a generic tourist trap with the Quartier des Spectacles. Further east of St. Denis and it's the Village which is also a pretty interesting place worth checking out. read more

This was my first stop when I visited Montreal. I was expecting it to be a beautiful shopping district like Newbury street in Boston. I was wrong. If anything it's comparable to soho in New York. The street is just okay looking, nothing special. Parking is expensive but it is available and not too difficult to find. What bothered me the most was the smell of cigarette that was all over the place and hard to avoid. The shops are mostly similar to American stores. I would not recommend it to tourists. If anything go downstairs to the underground mall that's connected to this street. It's way better. read more

Uh, there are a lot of stores here. But seriously, the Apple Store ain't no better here than anywhere else. There are 3 ALDO shoe stores on this street, one in the Eaton mall and two others, like within a mile of each other. The Eaton mall is ok, ain't nuthin special. As a tourist, I wouldn't waste more than an hour or 2 on St. Catherine St. Go to Crescent or Rue. St. Laurent for nightlife or the old town. read more

St Cath in my humble opinion represents the main busy-bee area for shopping, commerce, pedestrian sights, sounds and smells of downtown MTL. It really is a kaleidoscope for your sensory perception. Visual, auditory, scent and of course taste. It's a wonderful place for a social anthropologist or the everyday citizen-visitor to come experience Montreal and the vibe of the city in centre-ville. This street runs a long way. A long long way from east to west. You can check out the pink balls (put up in summer of 2016) over in the east end Gay Village or head to the west end of St Cath where a plethora of Asian restaurants- cafes of super high quality inexpensive food can be found. Sure the vibe is completely different in summertime. This is in my opinion when MTL comes most alive. Starting around F1 weekend (1st weekend of June) it's the start of the summer festival season. Street festivals and people can be found at all hours of the day soaking in the sun feeling joyful and enjoying the awesomeness of our fleeting warm southern type weather. Winter can be harsh. Wind can whip through St Cath like a wind tunnel. This is the time where people appear to be moving to their destination at a much faster pace or to connect to the underground tunnels and modes of transportation to take us to and from the downtown. To come to MTL is to visit St Cath. Be courteous to others and try not to get run over by a honking car as pedestrians play secondary roles in the ecosystem of traffic in downtown MTL. read more
