On my recent trip to Colorado I stopped by the Beaver Creek Nordic Sports Center to rent some…read moresnowshoe gear for the day. I've rented gear from this location many times before, and it's always been a pleasant experience, but I felt like my recent visit was less than enjoyable. Laurie assisted us, and when I opened the door to the shop she told us to wait outside, she was on the telephone at the time, and it appears that she was the only one in the shop. So we waited outside, and a couple minutes later she comes out and asks us what we need, she seemed a bit frazzled at the time. We let her know that we're here to rent gear for the day. While sitting outside she has us fill out the paperwork and she brings some hiking shoes for us to try on. Once we tried on boots that fit, she asked for our credit cards, and took them back inside the shop to ring us out. It seemed to be taking a little long, so I thought it might be a good idea to check and see what was going on. When I opened the door to the shop she tells me that my credit card is being declined, and I thought that was strange because I just used it to get a cup of coffee within the last 30 mins and it was working fine at that time. I started to approach the counter because I noticed they have a credit card machine with the chip reader and perhaps she needed to insert my card in there for it to work, and once I do that she puts her hand up and tells me "can you just stand over there". She then walks to the front of the counter and my credit card works when she inserts the chip. After that she comes outside to give us our receipts and says we're good to go, and then I ask her to please explain how to put on the snowshoe gear because my mom has never done this before. She did explain the gear and made sure our poles were at the correct height after I asked her to, however as soon as someone else walked up to the shop, she was quickly walking away and I had to raise my voice and say "Wait a second, we would like to use the restroom before we get on the lift can you please give us the code?" The entire interaction with Laurie was very strange. Usually they would give you a map and share their recommendations of where to hike depending on your skills level. I'm not sure if this was stopped due to COVID-19 protocols or if she just forgot to do it. She seemed a bit rushed or perhaps she wants to limit customer interaction as much as possible due to the COVID-19 situation, but whatever the reason I didn't feel like it was good customer service. I've gone on multiple tours and rented gear in the past, and it's always been great. I understand that with the COVID-19 situation some changes needed to be made (i.e. trying on gear outside, leaving your shoes in bins outside), but if an employee is so fearful of what's going on that they come across with an attitude, perhaps they shouldn't be in a customer facing role, there has to be a happy medium. I wish the best for this shop, but definitely feel like they would benefit from having more of a friendly and warm approach, providing excellent customer service at a distance if they want those customers returning. Without customers there will not be a Nordic Center in Beaver Creek, and that would be a real shame because McCoy Park is such a lovely place to explore.

But they've changed policies and now you will be competing with downhill skiers and snowboarders for the trails. Serenity and the mystic experience of the mountains is gone! The Nordic Center charges significantly more for the lift ticket up to McCoy, and the experience is so diminished! The people at the Nordic Center are nice enough, but don't bother with tours here or trying to enjoy McCoy if you want to snowshoe or cross country unless you like paying top dollar for not much.

I worked for Prater Lane under two Directors while my children were young. I must say, I am not a…read moredisgruntled employee like the lad below. I have always found the Director's, Colleen and Lisa and most employees at Prater as devoted, kind, loving and doing their best to care for each child in a professional and safe manner. Did I mention I have two Master's Degrees in Early Childhood and Secondary School Education and Community Counseling, I only share as I want you to understand, I am a professional who understands child care and education. I had both of my children attend Prater and to this day, they still go back and visit their teachers, who loved and cared for them daily until they reached school age. I have worked with children and families for over 25 years, my knowledge base of children and developmental needs is well established. Everytime I go into Prater, children are happy, parents feel comfortable and staff are doing an excellent job with the children. Lisa is approachable for feedback from staff and parents. A parent is invited in to see how their child is doing, this is a very transparent child care center. Prater offers Vail Resort staff a reduced rate on childcare, but as we all understand, in business you can not give things away to be relevant. Prater has ongoing trainings to improve knowledge and be on the cutting edge of childcare, they are innovative and use their budget wisely. They have received numerous child care awards and grants and are a great referral source for the Vail Valley community. We all know childcare can be difficult, at times, children can be difficult or have stress that takes additional care. I know Prater does their best to sooth and care for each child and their needs. Is Prater perfect, no, but it is so dang close you can not count it out. I believe the young man, who knows everything in his rantings has much to learn. I wish him well in his future endeavors, as I am grateful he is no longer at Prater (One bad apple can taint the whole bunch) and he can pursue becoming a parent, rather than a critic, and learn the complexities of managing child(ren) or being a working parent wanting the best and safest childcare available. Take it from a expert, Prater is the place you want to be if you are a child (my boys were in the Beaver Creek ski and snowboard schools that Prater participates in, loving it) and it provides me, the parent and staff the peace of mind so I may be productive in my work. In closing, call other centers, go visit and see what is out there. I assure you, you will return to Prater and be thankful for such a great place to care and educate your child, I am and always will be. Sincerely, Penny Frank

School should be…read moreabout the children, school should be about making change and making the future bright for young minds. I have worked in the field for a few years and went to school for such work. Working in a few other childcare institutions I felt comfortable taking upon Prater Lane for my next personal adventure. This school is uncomfortable for everyone involved. There is no chemistry between the staff members, no direction from the 'director' Lisa, and the consistency of moving the teachers from class to class gives no sense of security to the children, the parents, or the staff. The overall pay to the staff is completely ridiculous from such a dynamic powerhouse, that being Vail Resorts. Employees that have worked there for years and years have only seen their pay increase minimally, in terms or actual raises. Myselfjust being hired in and having a degree I was offered 15$/hr, compared to someone who has worked there for almost a century... not making anywhere near what they paid me. Favoritism and lackluster management skills from the 'director' Lisa has lead to the absolutely tremendous turnover rate at Prater Lane, I was no exception. I understand the parents enrolling their children in Prater Lane are doing so because as Vail Resorts employees they claim to offer 'discounts' to their employees. I myself heard it from many parents... how ridiculously expensive it is for the actual quality of what you're getting... mediocre. With the exception of a few staff members... I would never recommend their staff or Prater Lane to anyone that is looking for quality and attentive love in the field of childcare
