It was about a 45min trip by subway and bus from London but easy and worth it. Beautiful cemetery! Now keep in mind, we only went to half of it, the West I believe, and I do have to say I'm REALLY bummed we didn't get to go to the other side where the pictures seem to show EXTRA impressive gravesites and mossileums... you could only visit that side if on a tour and unfortunately our timetable did not allow that. Still, it was beautiful and peaceful and very interesting!

I'm a big statue fan, and this is honestly one of the most well made statues I have ever seen. It's a thing of beauty to behold. As for the cometary itself, it's an old one and has many tombstones that have been around for over a hundred years. It can be creepy, if you get creeped out easily. Still, I enjoyed it, and really enjoyed the the Karl Marx tomb.

I'm…read morepassionate about beautiful cemeteries with gorgeous statuary/etc. and this cemetery doesn't have that type of beauty - but even though some parts of the cemetery are overgrown, the atmosphere is still special and it's also a wonderful place to walk through. We saw several people walking dogs, and I had a great conversation with a neighborhood resident when I was sitting on a bench.

The cemetery is built on top of the hill so you can have a really nice view from the top. I believe they organized guided tours sometimes during the year, otherwise entrance is free.

Kensal Green is one of the "Magnificent Seven" private cemeteries in London with Highgate probably…read morebeing the most famous of them all. Kensal Green has been neglected by comparison but is definitely catching up. Apparently all the plots were sold in the 18th and 19th Century at a one-off cost (rather than annual subscription), and the Friends of Kensal Green have been trying to locate surviving members of those families for the last few years. Most plots are now very well tended and no longer provide shelter for the homeless. It is lovely to stumble across picnics celebrated near gravestones - I love how those London burial grounds are anything but morbid. Not even the catacombs which are included in guided tours once a month. Best check the website though as there was talk of renovation on my last visit. Perhaps not quite as high profile as Highgate, but there are still quite a few well known names to be found. Mind you, my fascination with Kensal Green is the chance of a peaceful walk through London's history - a truly beautiful place.

Here new graves are placed between old ones so be mindful of people here to mourn their beloved ones. It has less grandeur than Highgate and also the outskirts of the cemetery look like a dump place (broken stroller and beer cans all other the place). There's also a big Sainsbury blocking the view. It's still pretty nice to walk in, there are some amazing monuments: Marc Brunel, the architect of the Thames Tunnel and sir Charles Barry, Westminster architect are buried there. On the upside it's free and you can go have lunch at Snaps + Rye afterwards.

It was opened in 1888 and is situated next to St. Nicholas' churchyard. It is difficult to distinguish between the cemetery and churchyard which means there are some very old graves alongside victorian ones. Some of the famous people buried here include Barbara Villiers, the mistress of King Charles II and the painters William Hogarth and James Whistler. One of the graves is that of a victim of the Titanic sinking. Arthur Burden was an Assistant Purser on the ill fated ship. His grave is under a white cross with a simple circle.

Sure, there's Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, with all the famous people. Here at Golder's Green…read moreCrematorium is where the most fantastic and famous drummer in rock resides. Keith Moon of the Who. The inscription on his plaque reads "There is no substitute". And there isn't! Visit on an appropriate moody, rainy, brooding London day, and toast Keith with a pint. Rabid fan, me? Probably. And you can take the bus there. Wall after all of plaques remember all the people whos ashes have been scattered here. No wave after wave of depressing gravestones, it's a quiet, contemplative place to walk around and contemplate . . . hopefully not dying before you get (really) old.

To view Freud's ashes, you need to ask the maintenance man to let you into that particular crematorium. He let us in and regaled us with his knowledge of Freud (and several of Freud's associates who are also there), his poems about Freud and grief, his paintings, his stories about other visitors, his charm, etc. He was the one who scooped up Freud's ashes after someone tried to steal it and instead dropped the urn on the floor, breaking it and sending Freud's ashes everywhere.

Interesting cemetery to walk around, in an otherwise fairly unremarkable part of London. Alcock, founder of Test Cricket - Panayis Athanese Vagliano, Greek shipping magnate - Henry Tate, sugar magnate and founder of the Tate Gallery - William Collingwood Smith, noted watercolour artist - Mary Bessie Brough, star of various silent films ....and many more... Unfortunately , in the postwar period Lambeth Council took over the cemetery and demolished some memorials; after a series of court cases in the 1990s, some of these were restored. Lacks the panoramic views offered by some of the other "Magnificent Seven" cemeteries in London (such as Nunhead), but of significant historical interest nonetheless. Worth a visit.

One theory for its existence is that it blocked a public right of way to serve as a watch house overlooking the old St George's graveyard - extremely popular with bodysnatchers in the 18th Century! With the ground floor consisting of nothing more than an alleyway behind the front door and the first floor just a tiny bathroom. It was built in 1805, and was damaged by a bomb in 1941. Lewis Grant Wallace was the first and only tenant.
