    Getting ready to head out!

Yaaaassssss, Hun-TY! Watching these mamas WERK IT! Hell, most of em working it way better than we do, ladies. Time to take notes. The first ever drag (queen) convention and it was awesome...especially for the first time around. Fashion, makeup, glitter, fabulous-ness... And some of your favorite stars from seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race (I stopped watching after Season 2 since I got busy, but I plan to catch up somehow) The only bummer was the lines to get autographs from some of your favorite stars were long as hell. You all need to fix this if you continue for years to come. And stop hiding behind those curtains! Come OUT and let your fans see you! We paid money for this! Mingle, mingle, mingle! Trust me...money isn't everything. Other than that, it was a ball. Can wait for next year. Now go Sissy That Walk!

This is my third year attending RuPaul's Drag Con and I absolutely love it!! The panel talks are always interesting, relevant and entertaining. The food truck options are always fantastic and now that the convention has moved to the larger North Hall of the LA Convention Center, there's far more room to meet queens from the show and from aroma be the world!! RuPaul always hosts a loving, open and family-friendly Drag Con with the highlight being her keynote address to wrap up the event on Sunday. Ru is so inspirational and honest. There's a place for everyone at Drag Con!!

I love RuPaul. I love RuPaul's Drag Race (Hey, Milk, Heyyyy). I love the art involved in creating drag personas, performances, and stories. I did not love RuPaul's Drag Con. For me, it was 3 to 3.5 experience but I think it's only fair to 4-star it because there are people the convention is more geared toward than myself. I think RuPaul's Drag Con is a great convention to attend if you live you A. Live close by and it's not a big deal to get in and out, or B. If you live in small town where the Queens don't come through and you maybe don't have access to many drag shows. If you're from another big city and would have to travel to get here, I'd say from my experience coming from San Francisco that you can skip it unless you like idea of paying money for a ticket and doing nothing but wait in chaotic 2-5 hours lines over and over all day only to spend more money to see a Queen from the show for a few seconds and you don't mind them being totally and understandably over it. I realized that I don't think I've ever been to a convention before and that it's very different from an expo or a festival. And the people who attend are not what I was expecting. It's not like going to drag shows at bars in big cities. And there are some of those people, but there's also a lot of... erm, 'convention people'. And everyone has their place there, I just realized that I am not a convention person and the scene at times felt a little sad as an attendee and certainly draining to the talent. It felt like more of a twisted human zoo where the Queens are nothing more than slabs of painted meat at disposal of what felt like a very parasitic audience. It's not getting the Queens at their best but it is getting a taste of them. I can only hope the talent made some serious dough for those 2 draining days and endless hours getting into looks to be ready by 10am until 7pm and into the wee hours of the night for the after shows. Not only will you feel bad for the Queens, but you'll feel bad for the vendors. Some of the more commercial vendors drew people but largely for photo opportunities or guest queens. The smaller vendors' tables were more often sad with no crowd or completely blocked by the never-ending lines of people waiting to meet a queen at a nearby booth. I can't imagine the convention was a lucrative one for them, but also the quality of products and vendors (not all but a lot) was pretty questionable. Borderline Etsy for the busted. I forked over the extra to meet RuPaul and he was a vision. The cleanest, freshest smelling cut of man I've ever experienced. The 2 minutes I spent with him in the private "room" for the photo op were magical and I was basically speechless as he even after what must have been the longest day ever had so much grace. Exactly the level of grace you'd hope a celebrity to have after pulling in the kind of dough Ru must be making off this event. It should also be noted that in order to meet Ru, you need to get there EARLY and purchase you ticket from the Ru booth at the back center of the convention and THEN wait in line for 5+ hours as schedules run behind. And then after that, wait another hour (though you can leave and walk around) for your photo to print. The highlight for me, beyond Ru, was meeting Milk, who is indisputably the sexiest man on the planet, even when he's playing a she. She's a fashion queen and cat person and even her merch person was legitimately the kindest person and so welcoming to everyone who came by. Because Milk is my favorite I came to see her both days and she remembered me and I melted inside. It was hard to get around the convention due to the lines blocking most of the pathways but I somehow kept finding my way back to Milk who seemed to be at her booth the entire day less a panel she was on and every time I saw her she was warm, kind, and patient despite the demands of con-attendees. So, much love to Big & Milky. Speaking of the panels... get there early. We wanted to go to a few on the first day but due to the 5+ hour line to see Ru we missed most. After the line, we tried to head up to a panel that was beginning an hour later only to find they'd cut off the line for that already. Some panels are obviously more popular than others but it seems they could have done a better job allocating larger rooms. We did see 3 panels on Sunday which were surprisingly empty, and at times sad, though still well done, in my opinion. The convention wrapped up with a limited seating keynote from RuPaul, and a short intro from Michelle Visage. The keynote was a little discombobulated and little Tony Robbins but the more I think about it the more I can see the points and think I enjoyed it. I LOVED that before the QA Ru explicitly said not to come up and compliment him or just give your opinion and not ask a question- like every Q&A in history. But, they allowed 6 attendees to ask questions and it took quite the unfortunate turn but I learned a lot so not a loss.

I'm a cishet female and RuPaul's Drag Race is one of my favorite shows. Though it is considered in many aspects a "reality show", it has elevated the art of drag to mainstream recognition and has given many LGBT+ performers so many opportunities within and outside the show. The traditional venue for drag queens still is the night show or drag brunch, complete with M&G and photo-ops. More successful queens can be involved in other productions and fans have more opportunities to meet their favorite queen, but depending on the production is limited to a few queens at most. DragCon is a twice-yearly event held in LA and NY that puts together a formidable lineup of queens and allows fans of the show to meet as many of their favorite queens as possible over a 3-day weekend. I'm no stranger to convention events, having done Comic-Con in SD and Anime Expo in the exact same building. Therefore I have a realistic expectation of what to accomplish in a day and plan accordingly. However, DragCon is a bit different from what can be considered more "traditional" conventions because of the nature of M&Gs. The experience of getting that pic with your favorite queen and/or getting something signed IS a product itself, and queens will take advantage of the convention situation and establish spending minimums in her booth. Keep in mind that not every queen has the benefit of a sponsor and may have to pay for booth space - the spending minimums then allow the queens to recoup any expenses related to appearing. There is a hierarchy to the spending requirement with some queens having a M&G/pic with any purchase (usually $5) while more popular queens (especially with the current season's top stars) charging a $30 minimum and superstars such as Trixie Mattel and Katya having a max cutoff. I'm not the target audience of a lot of the programming with the exception of a few of Drag Race's sub-shows (UnHhhh, Bro'Laska) so I went to only 2 panels. Much of my time was in the exhibition hall waiting in line for a M&G opportunity with a queen, and for many people this is the case. Plan your day accordingly according to both time AND budget as if you're a fan of several popular queens this can easily eat into your budget and can take up significant time chunks. With this being said DragCon is very intense and exhausting event; I'm glad to have done it but most likely this will be my only DragCon. Why? Drag Race has now fallen victim to its own success and is now an over-commercialized version of the show I fell in love with and DragCon just solidifies my opinion. - The general ticket prices aren't that bad with weekend pricing being less than $70 for 3 days BUT VIP ticket not only has a separate line to meet the queens, they also can enter the convention an hour early. If you like a popular queen and want to do an M&G/see a panel, you might not get to see them especially if all the VIPs get there before you and fill up all the spots. Case in point: the UnHhhh panel was at 10am, which coincides with the opening time for general admission. VIP admission was able to fill up virtually all the space in the room, leaving no room for non-VIP. - VIP ticket is an investment. For comparison Comic-Con 4-day admission + Preview Night costs just as much. Even then a VIP ticket may not be enough to get everything you want. I was a companion for my friend who was also ADA - this gave us literal front-of-line privilege for panels and most queen booths will honor this but this is at the queen's discretion, especially as VIP lines can be awful already. My friend and I were able to see all the panels and queens we wanted to see because of VIP and ADA. This wouldn't be possible with just VIP. - Some of the queens can be a bit... extra. Like charge $50 minimum and offer $100 for fast-pass privilege. Or a queen not showing up to her own panel. Or sell merch to promote a non-existent romance post-show. - Some of the staff clearly had no clue what was going on so it led to misleading information, especially when it came to managing a queen's booth. - The amount you can accomplish at the con is proportional to your spending budget. It is so easy to blow $100+ in a single day if you're not careful. Despite my criticism I'm giving DragCon 4 stars because my friend and I really did a blast. The queens that we ended up talking to were so kind and down-to-earth for the limited time allotted. Should I want to meet the queen the branding and merch is on point where I would have no problem meeting the spending requirement. The con was also very festive with a lot of people dressed in drag with some of the attendees being just as beautiful as the professional queens. But in the future I would rather see the queens in a more controlled environment such as a concert or comedy show. This way the ticket sales are capped so lines would be more manageable and I'm guaranteed to see the queen somehow.

I'm so glad that an event like this exists. Thank you to RuPaul to have the chutzpah to be who you wanted to be. Look at what RuPaul has created. Industries, originality, artistry, and some fun wacky people who can let it all hang out. This event moved me. It was more than a convention. It is a tribe of people who except each other. Who love each other. Who don't judge. We are people that love colorful, wonderful, individuality. I'm a straight, married white girl. But I greatly support my LGBTQ communities, and I'm forever grateful to RuPaul and my husband for opening my eyes. I've got one thing to say....Moesha, moesha, moesha!

Had a blast at my first Con EVER. I definitely recommend getting VIP otherwise expect to spend a lot of time waiting in line. The queens were super friendly, and many will take a photo or do an autograph for free. Can't wait to go back.

But Saturday was cool, Clover's grass was green, and the atmosphere was indeed festive. There were several options for free or metered parking in supervised lots within walking distance, making at least our vehicular arrival and departure quick and painless. After leaving the car, we made a beeline for the park's restrooms, where, as it typically happens whenever we step out to a fairground, we spent a considerable chunk of our visit waiting our turns in slow-moving lines. Plenty of music filled our ears while we waited, especially the notes coming from center stage, where a featured group, The Lions, sounded particularly captivating. We quietly joined standing watchers later on, just in time to see The Lions wrap up their soulful and energetic gig. Festival treats were also close at hand, so we couldn't miss tasting Linde's old-fashioned sugar roasted almonds. We followed our noses to her popular table where I impulsively grabbed us a couple of warm paper cones in a sweet twofer deal. Linde jokingly asked if we were unable to share, to which I honestly replied, "yes." It was a fair-tastic time. The usual apparel gifts and arts-and-craftsy things were available for passers-by to browse and purchase, and interactive activities engaged families, kids, and kids-at-heart. It seemed apparent to us after one walk-through that the city government was out to connect with and educate visitors in exchange for cheap swag and fun, with a number of public service kiosks that let you spin wheels and answer questions for prizes. We didn't get around to checking everything out (see Tess M.'s yelp here: http://bit.ly/11hmlqO for some neat things we missed), but all in all, the Festival was pleasant and low-key, which is pretty much Santa Monica in a nutshell.

Yeah, it adds up and it doesn't seem worth it, but if there's 8 of you in the car and split the tab, it isn't too bad. We came through on a Friday night. We opted for the VIP package and bypassed pretty much everyone (that line looked like a thousand miles long, so that alone threw all regrets, doubts and second thoughts out the window!) Bypassing the long line was one thing, but then my passengers' bladders decided to go in sync and in unison all needed a bathroom break BEFORE the drive. The VIP package came in handy once again - they have a separate set of porta-potties for VIP peeps, too! Needless to say, there were no lines there either. So, yeah, off to a good start. I didn't really know what to expect, so I decided not to expect too much. There were a lot of mixed reviews on Yelp (complaints were mostly about the cost) so I kept an open mind. THE VERDICT: Totally WORTH IT. This whole production was well put-together. It was beautifully created with a lot of imagination. The engineering and construction alone were astonishing, how long did it take them to put it all up! And I really liked that they coordinated all the lights' movements with the music coming off the assigned radio station (107.9.) And those souls braving the cold as they entertained us with their dance moves... KUDOS! (I didn't get to see what's in the VIP box but going by how each of my passengers went through it like the Tasmanian Devil, I'm gonna assume whatever was in there was fun!) If this is your thing, here are a few tips: 1) Entry is at Holly and Huntington NOT at the main entrance. If you do end up at the main entrance, they'll reroute you. No worries. 2) You can come through as early as 30 minutes before your scheduled time, but try to be there within that window just for the sake of being considerate. The whole thing is about 45 minutes to an hour, all depending on how slow or fast you go. 3) CLEAN YOUR WINDSHIELDS! I meant to, but I completely forgot. But even with the semi-dirty glass, it was still pretty good. 4) Sunroofs are great! I didn't have one (wouldn't have mattered if I did since I was the one behind the wheel) but I was sorta jealous of the peeps who made full use of it. I imagine that's the best way to experience it. 5) You are allowed to open your windows. Just watch out for fog machines... 6) Take your time and let it all sink in. If you can afford it, I highly recommend it, something cool to do social distancing style. It's an event for all ages and a great excuse to get out of the house more especially during these challenging times.

The booths are run by the artists/sellers themselves which is a great way to connect with these super talented entrepreneurs. Hard to make the rounds without picking up a few items and supporting local artists at the same time, most of whom work out of their apartments. There are some foodie freebie samples and a freebie photo booth too. Meters all around downtown but as of this writing (5/23), self-parking in the building was a flat $8. I ended up with a giant chicken named Bella along with cards, stickers and iron-on patches. Yelpers, you will run into people you know, so the 'no sweatpants' rule applies. See you there.
