Solid steakhouse. Decent bar. Was in town for a weeknight, and this was one of the few places open after 8 pm. I got the 16 oz ribeye, salad and baked potato. Steak was cooked like I wanted, baked potato was cooked through, and salad was simple but good. Not a lot more to say about it, very good meal. Place is a great value, $29 for the meal, and drinks were priced right, Jim Beam doubles were $11.50, crazy good price there. Service was fast and friendly. In town for work and decided to grab a steak since I was in Texas. The place was busy especially for a Monday night which had to be a good sign right? I think they were short staffed bc I didn't see many waitress for how busy it was. So getting drinks was a little slow but no big deal. I got the 10 oz KC Strip, baked potato and a Caesar salad. The steak was thinner than I'm used to for kc strip so it got cooked to a medium well instead of medium. It was seasoned really well and cut very easily though. Baked potato had butter, sour cream, cheese and bacon bits and was nice and hot. the Caesar salad was nothing special. A very cutely decorated restaurant that is convenient to everything in Vernon. I had the ribeye tacos that were cooked perfectly and a generous portion. It was two meals for me. This was a pleasant surprise as a stop on a long roadtrip. We arrived late but the steakhouse was open till midnight and graciously accommodated our family of 5. It's not easy being green, I expect it's not easy being a small town steak house either. I'm in Vernon Texas scouting new locations for the newest muppet show and decided to get some dinner. I thought about getting pizza at Pizza Hut but I'm getting tired of having to go to two different huts for pizza and sunglasses so I decided to get something different. I found Rusty Spur on yelp and despite the fact that no one wants to hear the word rusty used to describe food, I moseyed on in there. There was only two waitresses and the one that took care of me was great! She was running herself ragged getting everyone taken care of. The other one looked lazier than whoever came up with the word "fireplace" (that's not true, I just wanted to include that joke, they both seemed great). I went into the restaurant and ordered the ribeye. I was really expecting to stick to my frog like diet, but I really ended up eating more like a snake. You know, where you eat 25% of your body weight, lay on the floor and hiss at anyone that comes near you. The portion sizes were gigantic and the meal was pretty good too. It doesn't look like much and there was a taxidermy monkey sitting on the wall staring at me the whole time which made me wonder if there was a taxidermy frog around somewhere, but overall it was a great dining experience and one of the better in Vernon from what I can tell. read more

I try to always support mom and pop businesses but if i could have given a zero star raiting I i would have this place has a lot of issues it is filthy. The tables doors and walls are all sticky the tables needed to be replaced 20 years ago. I dont know how it has an 5 star reviews because there is certainly no way they are honest. Setting aside my aversion to the filth I ordered the ribeye medium rare salad and fries. The lettuce was disgusting the carrots were white and soft 8 croutons were ok I gave the tomatoes to my husband. The fries were gray and drenched in grease. The steak looked beautiful and was perfectly cooked but it was completely inedible because it was horribly over salted to add to this my husband ordered the filet also inedible because of the salt he ate a baked potato and a salad and a slice of texas toast we both had sodas when our food was delivered it was not our server but something clearly was going on. That server was mad barley spoke. I tried my steak and sent it back when our server came back she had a plate with another beautiful steak that was just so salty. She was clearly angry and so must have been the cook because she threw that plate down in front of me when she came back and it only had the steak on it. She never even tried to fix my husband's steak she just brought us the bill wit just my steak taken off. Drink salad and baked potato that I never got to eat all charged. I won't pay for food that I can't eat because of how it's been cooked but to pay for something I never got is a bit much we paid our tab even left a tip but got the heck out of there what a bunch of problems this place has. Food was just so so. Certainly not with the $17 price. My salad was pretty much lettuce with old moldy carrots & over ripened cherry tomatoes, & (what appeared to be, store bought) tiny shredded cheddar cheese. No other cheese options were available. Our meal came with a side of Texas toast & it was ONE triangle of regular toasted bread. My husband's $28 8oz filet was good however. We had a stopover in Vernon on a road trip and decided to eat at the Rusty Spur based on the Yelp comments...glad we did. Don't be intimidated by your first impression when walking in...it is the opposite of fancy. After sitting, the very friendly waitress, Camry, asked what we'd like to drink. My wife asked to see the wine list...no wine list. I asked for a vodka martini...they don't make them. Camry apologized with a smile "we're a cowboy bar". Got it. I ordered the rib eye steak. Perfectly prepared, tender and tasty and way too much meat for me. My wife ordered Glenn's salad and loved it. The food here is really good and a really good value. read more

Great steaks, stiff drinks, cold beer, and excellent service. What's not to like? Reasonable prices, too. I look forward to coming here when I'm in Vernon. They're open later, but the kitchen closes at 10pm. If you're passing thru between Wichita Falls and Amarillo, it's worth getting off the highway in Vernon. There's cheap gas at the Walmart, and you can stay the night at this one in your RV. The Rusty Spur is worth the two minute drive from Walmart. read more

I wasn't sure about this place, looking at it from the outside. However, I quickly found it was all it had been hyped up to be. The ribeye was one of the best steaks I've had in years--way too much for one person to eat! The baked potato was perfect. The fried okra was crap. The chicken fingers were tender and juicy. The French fries were were thin, crisp, and flavorful. The steak sandwich was, by my husband's assertion, "freaking awesome!" I am not going to lie, Vernon and the surrounding areas do not have many great food options. Loves BBQ and Steakhouse in Chillicothe, TX I heard is great, but of course they were randomly closed on the Saturday we were in town (you gotta love the South and the fact that listed hours are rarely accurate). It looked great and I heard good things, but I did not get to try it, so I don't have an actual review. Back to the Rusty Spur, this was our third dinner in Vernon and to be honest at this point we weren't expecting much. Not that the other places we went were bad, they were just nothing worth noting. The Rusty Spur on the other hand was really good. I had the wings, the loaded fries, the fried pickles, the Filet and the Loaded Baked Potato. Honestly I enjoyed it all. Now if you are coming from one of the major cities, you always have to temper your expectations, but after one meal, I can say I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a dinner option in the area. They usually have homemade dessert options from a lady in town, but of course she decided not to make them the Saturday we were in town. I was bummed because her best dessert is Red Velvet Cake which is my favorite. One special note is unlike every place in the area, their dinner salad has Romaine lettuce, this is a BIG deal. read more

This place was interesting in a disappointing kind of way. Its almost like this place is having an identity crisis. I came by while here for work. I ordered the ribeye with a loaded potato and blue cheese on the salad. Salad was good. Potato was cooked through and the temperature of the sun. Very hot! I'm not complaining, but it took awhile to be able to take a bite. The steak looked great but was really really poorly trimmed/cut. There was silver skin in almost every edge bite and right down the middle. I mean the really inedible chewy connective tissue. I kept getting silver skin in every other bite and gave up. Flavor was good though. Toast was flat as a sheet. Totally smooshed flat. Well toasted and buttery but I have to wonder what got sat on it- or who sat on it. The ambiance sucked. There are two rooms (one with a stage) connected by a big open doorway. I sat in the room with the stage. There's an automated jukebox on the stage that played country music way too loud. Painfully loud. And the volume varied. It went from loud to deafening back to loud. I was here alone, but there would be no conversation with that playing. Weirdest/most annoying the other room was playing other music. Including something akin to opera. WTF? Dueling music for your dinner? Very annoying. This place has potential but needs to choose an identity. A place for dinner or be a bar. Service was excellent. read more
