I love libraries and have been to many, both here and overseas, so while the Ryde libraries do many things well - clean and pleasant, offering a decent selection of resources, events, and so forth, I will just focus on a few points particularly for Ryde Library.
-If you forget to bring your physical library card, you can loan materials without it ONE TIME ONLY. Yes, one time EVER. I confirmed this with the librarian who is pushing to get it changed. So if I'm twenty years old and I forget to bring my card and I use up my one time, I can't ever check out items again without the physical card, even if it's fifty years later. This is a bit outdated, particularly in our digital age. Systems have existed for years where you can enter your library card number and pin and loan library items using that. If you're allowed to log into your account and into the library computers using the card number and pin, surely they can allow us to loan items too.
-I don't know why on earth they put that giant chess set right next to the kids' area and expect kids not to play with it. Can someone please make a good choice and move the set or relax the rules? They're giant plastic chess pieces for crying out loud, and I have never seen anyone actually playing chess there.
-More computers are needed at Ryde Library. They fill up quickly, even on weekdays, so if you're planning a trip in, allow for ample waiting time.
-Soft rugs and child-sized tables/chairs/couches would be a great addition as those plastic dogs and stools aren't great for sitting and reading on...I only ever see kids pushing them around.
Of course I brought these up directly with the library, but if any of you feel the same way...the more they hear it, the better! ;) read more
