This is weird, Yelp says there's 9 reviews (as of July 2019) and a 3 star rating. But I only see 2 reviews up. Weird. It's just another, typical, Yelp bug.
Anyway, I'm giving this rail 5 stars because it's the rail I used the most when I stayed in Munich. It was convenient and fast.
My hotel was close to Munich Ost. And I rode it to go to to Marienplatz, Hauptbanhhof (for all the day trips), and the airport. Yep, this is the line you ride to get to and from the Munich Airport.
When you buy a ticket, there's no scanning system. You just buy the ticket and get on, no need to stamp or anything (depending on which machine you bought it from). Then a plain-clothed, random ticket-inspector will pop up and check your tickets. If you don't have your ticket, it's a 50 Euro fine. If you get caught again, the fine goes higher. I think you can even go to jail if you get caught multiple times.
I only encountered those guys once out of the many times I rode the train. I wonder how many people take the chance and ride the trains without a ticket? It is tempting since it seems like you rarely get checked. But you know how it goes, the second you ride without a ticket, those guys will show up and ask for your ticket. I wouldn't take a chance.
If you're going to and fro form the city centers, the trains are quite frequent. I liked how I didn't have to wait long for the next train to come. If you're going to many different stops with a group of 2-5 people, I suggest getting the group pass. It's a great deal. read more
