And this completely takes away the joy of train travel. It's really a bit like flying Ryanair as opposed to a nice old-fashioned airline. Too bad this OBB company did not realise that people like the comfort and coziness of compartmented cars, rather than the bus-like promiscuity of their "flagship" RailJet.

The line was opened to cater for the rising number of tourists to the lake, following the death of King Ludwig II (1886), when his successor, Prince Regent Luitpol, opened the half-finished palace on the Herreninsel to the public. It has provided a service ever since, though it's fortunes have waxed and waned over the years. The train runs May to September but they have one historic steam locomotive and one diesel, so it won't always be a steam experience. The service is roughly hourly during the day and the journey takes 10 minutes in the delightful little green carriages.) We transited through here to get to Salzburg and see a few nearby castles while in town for 9 days. We found it a bit more confusing to navigate than the Central Station but were easily able to find snacks and foods for lunch and find our platforms.

Due to its proximity to our Munich hotel, Ostbahnhof was our "home base" when traveling. It's large…read moreand can be a bit confusing (as any subway/train/hub of travel can be to those who aren't used to it), but once you get the hang of the hallways, stairs and turns, it's easy to navigate. We took many a train to and from our second "home base", Marienplatz. The thing that I loved about starting and ending at Ostbhanhof was the fact that we could take practically any train - going in the correct direction, of course - if we wanted to stop at Marienplatz. That meant we rarely had to wait for a train, which was an added bonus, given we were there in the middle of winter, and there is no shelter from the cold, wind and rain on the platforms. Signage is plentiful, there are plenty of ticket machines scattered throughout the station, and one can buy anything from pastries and coffee to lotions and toothpaste without having to leave the relative warmth of the station itself. Our last train out of Ostbahnhof was the one to Salzburg, so we were able to connect locally as well as "internationally". It definitely made it easy for weary travelers, with just a bit of German language on their side.
