It's been running for 15 years now, and aims to provide student listeners with decent music and up-to-date hourly news plus information on issues that are important to them. During the daytime, there's usually more mainstream content such as chart music, competitions, features and general banter - then after 6pm there's more specialist music, whether it's jazz or new, emerging talent. On Sundays they have some talking radio - with political debates, comedy, and so on - from 10am to 3pm. Then at 3pm there's a student chart countdown compiled by a collaboration of various universities across the country. For journalism students at Cardiff, and particularly those studying broadcasting, the radio station provides an opportunity to gain some practical experience and something to stick on your CV - although volunteering opportunities are open to students of all disciplines, not just the journalists!

This station is run by a great team of dedicated and passionate students, I would recommend listening to this station even if you aren't a student, and that you can, every so often it will broadcast on 87.7fm for a few weeks. Still I do occasionally switch to Real Radio for a bit of cheese in the evenings when other stations get serious. I like David Heane's Evening show for a bit of sit along action on the way home for example. It's about as good as commercial radio gets really, there is something on there for everyone and on the Welsh version I like that they give you news on what's going on and different tips like the money saving tips for eating out.

Aimed at 25-54 year olds, it's an independent local radio that broadcasts on FM from Morganstown in Cardiff right across South and West Wales. It does have a slightly cheesy tone - as do most local radio stations - but the music is easy to listen to and their news bulletins are pretty good, combining some national and showbiz stories, and some local news. They also sometimes run some decent competitions, and have regular features such as 'Pop the Question' every weekday (on the mid morning show) when they ask a set of questions, and listeners call in with their answers - with the chance to win a prize (such as a DAB digital radio) if they get them right.

This is great if you're between the ages of 8 and 17, but not quite so great is you mind hearing the same songs playing over and over and over and over... No, to be fair, Red Dragon is not nearly so bad as some other station where they literally play the same 20 songs, at least here there are requests for older songs, so you'll occasionally find yourself listening to a bit of a gem. Train's 'Drops of Jupiter' springs to mind. Who's that tutting in the back? Red Dragon FM are very involved in the local community, looking through the galleries on their website showed a massive amount of local events that they've been a part of. They are also very involved while on air, with local listeners forever honing in for competitions or other random involvement. Anyway, this is the kind of station you might flip on while you do the housework or might have to listen to while in work, but it's not going to speak many words or wisdom or enhance the culture in your life.

A five star radio show; it has competitions, quizzes, phone in call sessions, guess the song and singer games, they have the local news updates, traffic and weather updates, they go out and about locally, they know their gossip about the arts and entertainment world and often help with charities. They are very sensitive towards their audiences, polite and caring. They also have a website. Which is full of games: news, competitions and of ways in how, if you should so wish to, to get in touch. You can watch them speak in their attractive studio of a station. I recommend for all teenagers, and young adults from ages; 12 - 30 year olds, preferably for those who live in Cardiff or Wales.

The office, located in a small shop just minutes from the centre of Penarth's popular high street, reels out hundreds of copies every Thursday which find their way into most local supermarkets and news agents. Particularly prominent are articles featuring; local schools and their pupils, fundraiser and charity events, and local sports team match reports. The paper is well written and informative, with a broad range of news and sport documented. Furthermore, the paper is particularly good in it's support of local business and trade through advertisement and positive feedback. A good local newspaper which is an important feature of many local residents' weekly literature.

I guess…read moretimes are tough for the media as well as every other business, and so this publication has had to move in with its sister publication, the Barry & District News, both of which belong to the Newsquest media group. The Penarth Times is a weekly newspaper serving the local town of Penarth, just outside Cardiff, which is home to a modest population of around 23,000. The paper focuses mainly on stories of local interest, whether it's news about local businesses, the activities of councillors, school sports' team successes, charity events, and so on. It also carries quite a lot of local advertisements, announcements and letters. It is published in tabloid format every Thursday, but it is available to buy throughout the rest of the week in local newsagents, supermarkets and so on. The last time I glanced at a copy I think it was selling at 40p an issue, but it is also available to be delivered to your door on a subscription basis. I'd read a copy if it was left on the train, but I wouldn't buy one - it's not the most exciting of publications, but for local residents it will keep you in the know about all the key local issues.
