I love beer bars, I particularly love craft beer bars that are hidden away from the mainstream because that tends to mean that there is something particularly special about the place. Well, I wouldn't necessarily say that this place is as hidden as some of the places that I have visited, because it was still pretty crowded, but then again that probably had something to do with it being a Friday night. Still, despite the crowds, I still loved this place, and I definitely loved the great range of beers they had on tap.

My favourite coffee in Brisbane. A little bit of teething went on when they first opened but SBC'S definitely found their groove. Head down the lane for a quick bite on your way to work or Friday night drinks, the ever-changing beer list makes it a good place to try something different, and the dudes at the bar are really knowledgeable and happy to let you try before you buy. Good for folks like me that dig beer but don't know a lot about the logistics of making it. Fun place to catch up with friends (or a boy you've got your eye on) and grab a light meal.

Food was stellar, guys behind the bar were extremely helpful with testing out the beers to help us choose the right fit. Any place that has old school arcade games is ALWAYS a good idea. Would absolutely recommend!

I'd noticed the window signage for this intriguingly named bar months ago and had wondered when it would finally open. Finally I read that it was opening last week, albeit minus a licence, but would open for food including breakfast. So I arranged with a friend to meet there this morning to check it out. Saccharomyces, I've discovered after some quick Google-ing, is a type of brewer's or baker's yeast which I'm guessing relates to it being a beer cafe. Labelled 'Beer-Cafe-Deli', it does appear to have a major focus on the beer aspect with 10 craft beers on tap at all times including some from Green Beacon, Beard & Brau and Mornington Peninsula. Obviously they do some eats as well but I'm not sure where the deli aspect comes in. I assumed the entrance would be on Melbourne St, since that's where I spotted the signage, but after realising there was no entrance and the signage clearly says 'Fish Lane', I rode around the corner to find it across from Wandering Cooks. Low-set and long, it's a bit hidden from the main streets but obvious once you're in the lane. Despite stating they were open from 7am, they didn't really open until around 7:15ish. The kitchen doesn't open until 7:30am but I believe coffee brewing happens from whenever they open. They do take-away coffees and simple take-away breakfasts including yoghurt, muesli and bacon & egg burgers. It's got a simple industrial vibe with polished concrete floors, exposed brick walls, timber tables and some comfy looking leather chairs. Plus the ubiquitous blackboard behind the counter. Despite being down a shady lane, it does get a decent amount of light in the morning and, given it's across from a stark white wall, potentially some glare later on. The breakfast menu has quite a few options including some interesting ones such as Indonesian Rice & Poached Egg and are all reasonably priced with the majority under $14. The majority is fairly simple and almost all options include eggs, which was less than ideal for my friend who is not an egg fan. The only non-egg options are the toast and condiments/avocado and the muesli parfait. She doesn't mind when egg is cooked into something so she decided to go for the Peanut Butter & Choc Chip Pancakes ($11) but apparently they didn't have that this morning. Or they weren't ready. This seems to be a common theme actually amongst cafes as she'd recently experienced the same issue somewhere else. So she chose the Muesli Parfait. The only apparent gluten-free item on the menu was the Indonesian Rice (assuming it had no soy sauce) and since I wasn't feeling that this morning, I asked about gluten-free bread. They had none but it is apparently coming and so they were willing to sub in something else for it instead. So I chose to have the Lemon & Cayenne Smashed Peas with a poached egg minus the toasted sourdough and with haloumi ($12) - oddly haloumi wasn't on the menu. Note, it's counter not table service and menus are on the tables. Also we only received water after asking for it - there's a chance it's self-service however and I just missed that. Coffees (long black for me and soy flat white for my friend - both $4) came out relatively quickly and were nice but I wasn't blown away. Sometime later our meals arrived. The muesli parfait was layered with yoghurt, muesli, strawberries and unexpectedly, grapefruit. Personally I love grapefruit but take issue with citrus and yoghurt. Unfortunately my friend hates grapefruit and so this was not ideal - but that's personal preference. My dish arrived nicely arranged on a long platter with a large serve of peas, with two poached eggs and three slices of haloumi with a couple of slices of lemon. The peas were the dull green they get when cooked for a long time and they weren't exactly smashed (although this could be due to them not being served on toast) and the poached eggs were soft but had that runny texture that comes from older eggs usually. The haloumi was fine - soft and warm but nothing outstanding again. I didn't detect any cayenne and as a spice lover, I had to add plenty of pepper which was that fine pre-ground type in shakers which I'm not a fan of. Why can't everyone just have pepper grinders to allow for freshly cracked pepper??? Overall it wasn't an awful experience but not particularly great. It's early days though so perhaps things will improve but if they do want to stand out as a cafe, I feel like they'll need to up their game to compete with others nearby. Prices are reasonable and it was friendly service however that's not enough to get me to return for breakfast. It's a nice looking bar with some good beer options however so I'll consider returning for drinks sometime.

The latter which I had yet to experience in Brisbane. Sporting four areas, the venue has something for pretty much anyone. On Saturday, it was bustling. Almost every table will filled (which is good going seeing as they only opened on the 19th) and amongst the couples and a friends populating the venue, there was one big family table having dinner. It diversity of the venue was comforting and reminded me of the English pubs I spent time in growing up. We had one quick drink on Saturday and tonight I returned to grab a quick dinner. It was quieter tonight, which suited what I was looking for. The menu, in my opinion, is spot on in size. Bat snacks, sharing sized options, sandwiches, sides and bigger plates. It's creative, but not over the top or complicated. I opted for the chip butty, because chips in bread. Come at me. The bread came filled with shoe strings fries, black garlic mayo and homemade tomato sauce. It was crisp and saucy and... bloody perfect really. Sitting at the bar (it's all bar service), I chatted to the bar staff who were just the right level of attentive. I asked for a glass of red to go with my sandwich, a slightly odd pairing, I know. My glass of Pinot was light, velvety and was the perfect match. For a venue that's been open for an entire seven days, they're doing something right. Wait, scratch that. Everything right.

We were looking forward to a good breakfast and ordered the Big Breakfast with avocado added and a couple of coffees. When our breakfast arrived it looked good, but as soon as we touched the eggs they were hard and rubbery and our hearts sank. There's not much worse than overcooked poached eggs. Cutting into the eggs, all 4 were hard boiled with an overwhelming smell and taste of vinegar. If the eggs were just hard we would have still eaten them, but all we could taste was vinegar and the whites were rubbery and inedible. The waitress offered to replace them with fried eggs after talking to the cook. She advised that the cook could only make poached eggs with vinegared water and they couldn't guarantee that the same thing wouldn't happen again. We look forward to soft poached eggs with breakfast every Saturday, so we took the chance that if they were cooked properly they wouldn't taste like vinegar...unfortunately that was a very bad mistake. The eggs were replaced with terribly under-cooked poached eggs with raw whites oozing all over the plate. The thin layer of cooked whites on the outside still tasted only like vinegar so we just ate the yolks. The rest of the breakfast was nice, but we left feeling like the cook had no idea how to poach eggs, or had deliberately under cooked the eggs to the point that they were also inedible. Either way, we wouldn't go back.

The joint is unassuming and casual but the service and the food is beyond delightful. Cheery, helpful and kid-friendly. I was thrilled to see a few toddlers already dining there on a Saturday night. Even more thrilled that they were not at all fussed when we asked for a table change away from the cold draft of our original table. The choice of beers (Green Beacon) excited my husband who'd already spied his top two faves in the fridge. We ordered the bacon and blue for him, cheeseburger for me and buffalo wings to share and our companions also ordered the lamb and tatziki burger. We were all extremely happy with our choices. The cheeseburger is always my go to, when trying a new burger joint and this didn't disappoint me. I observed the melted cheese when my waitress brought the dish and I was salivating. The patty was perfectly cooked, the brioche was light and tasty. My taste buds were doing the samba! Joy of joys! The buffalo wings were flavoursome and absolutely divine! I could honestly devour them in one sitting sans the burger. I didn't notice any hot sauce but you didn't need them. It was just the right amount of heat (not overpowering at all). Brew Master's, I'll definitely be back!

At the Bench they value quality vs quantity and will have limited edition runs of the best beers around. You'll need to be quick for these.
