(Information about the Lwa, for instance). When I first started asking questions they immediately directed me to books of spells and charms, a compilation of things that were largely useless to me and not my reason for stopping by. When I started asking if they could suggest any good books on the faith that I might use to learn stories about the Lwa and Orisha's, they were quick to say that if I wanted to learn about that I'd have to go to Haiti. It was a weird experience, and while they were pleasant enough I have to say the place felt like it was intended to market to tourists selling gizmos and gadgets. A disappointing trip overall, but a nice enough shop for supplies.

They have anything and everything you can think of.. and that includes my all-time favorite boriqua delicacy.. pastelles! I picked up a dozen (half chicken, half pork) for only $22. They come frozen & bundled in twos and are the perfect size, which make them easy for boiling. If you've never had a pastele before, they are sort of similar to a tamale.. except made with masa de yuca instead of corn flour. They are filled with meat, pimento, olives and more, all mixed together with delicious achiote seed oil, spices and herbs.
