Dates: July 18 - 24, 2024 LOA: 48' Beam: 15' Draft: 3'4" The mega dock at this marina is massive. We stayed here for a week to receive some packages and reset. We were assigned a spot on the outside of the mega dock itself. In the late afternoon through early evening the current gets pretty rough and has you bouncing around a bit, but it does settle down. We had 30 to 40ft of depth under us on the outside of the mega dock. Pump outs are done via a pump out boat. As long as someone is free they can come take care of you. The laundry facilities and showers were really nice, as were the bathrooms. This marina is under construction, expanding their available slips and putting in all new floating docks. Parking is all gated, so for Walmart deliveries and Uber you need to walk up to the bus station bench by the gas station. The staff were great! Super helpful and always answered the phone. There is a shuttle that runs every hour until close that will take you anywhere downtown, and it goes to West Marine once a day. Charleston is a wonderful city and we will definitely be returning to this marina to spend more time. It was a great experience all around. read more

Charleston city is a great location to moor/store a boat. I've had my new Searay there for about a month now and very happy with the experience so far. Their staff is friendly and very helpful. The slip fees are standard for the area, but I still don't find them over priced. They have full facilities, power, tv, WiFi, and their bathroom/shower house on the dock is always very CLEAN and new. Parking is my only complaint and not fills quickly. From my user standing though, they are paving a new lot this year. Last, all access points have security gates, code protected, and 24 hour surveillance. The dock office is open 24 hours a day which I personally found to be an awesome selling point. read more

We didn't plan to come to Charleston City Marina. We didn't plan to stop in Charleston at all on this trip. When the autopilot ram tore off its mount offshore Charleston was our best bet and so the Mega Dock it was. As has been my experience in the past management is good and staff on the docks were attentive. The fit us into a spot and when the power pylon didn't work relocated us quickly and effectively. Importantly, we saw staff working to fix the pylon within minutes. They definitely stay on point with maintenance and repair. Good help with local knowledge for repair parts, clean heads and showers, responsive staff, docks in good repair. Well done. read more

I've stayed at Charleston's Safe Harbor several times, its has been and continues to be a first class marina. However my recent stay in April 2024, I found out what a great services operation they have. My power boat 71' LOA lost the primary steering system, we arrived on Saturday at Safe Harbor using the backup system. We called ahead and they moved a boat to help accommodate me docking under bad conditions. I had planned to stay one night at the marina, because they were full the next several days, but they made space for me so I didn't have to move some where else. The real surprise came after I called the Service Manager, Ryan Lippincott, on a Sunday. I left a message explaining my problem. Imagine how surprise I was to get a call from Ryan on the next day at 8:30 am. Ryan said I understand your problem and I know a contractor who has experience with Glendinning controls. Dave showed up within 2 hours of our call and worked on my boat for 5 hours to find out it was a simple 3amp fuse on the motherboard of the Glenndening controller that needed to be replaced, which he sourced and installed. Ryan, Dave and Safe Harbor went over and above the call of duty for me. I've been a boater for 38 years and stayed a lot of marina, these guys are experienced and helpful, I highly recommend Safe Harbor for your next stay, and when you need service they can deliver !!!! read more

If I could give zero stars for this terrible business, I would. We stayed at the Safe Harbor in Charleston and were very disappointed. They charge premium dollars for not so premium service. We hired the electrical company on the dock and they sent a young man out to look at our problem. He told us that he couldn't work on the problem because he thought it was going to rain soon. Understandable. Here's where it gets dodgy and dishonest. We didn't get a bill for over 4 months and assumed it was because he just walked to the boat and talked to us for a few minutes, and he did no actual work. He did make a suggestion verbally as to what to look at, which I did myself. All of this talk took just a few minutes. Imagine our surprise when we got the bill 4 months later for over $200. When I called the manager, he said the young man had clocked that amount of time, which I find hard to believe. I told the manager I'd pay the bill for what was fair, which should have been about 20 minutes of talking. The next thing we knew they charged our card for the full amount. When I called back to complain, the manager, Ryan Lippincott, literally yelled at us, accused us of lying to him, and would not have anything resembling a civilized conversation, just literal yelling and screaming. I am in my mid 60's and I have never in my entire life been treated so poorly and disrespectfully by any business anywhere. I would never take a boat into this marina again. We are cruisers for half the year and will be sharing this story with everyone we meet that asks about marinas in this area. THIS IS A BUSINESS TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COST, as they are not honest, seem eager to lie and treat people horribly who use their facility. We certainly will never be back there. The dock people were friendly and helpful, but I can't help but question management that would have a manager like Ryan working for them. One last frustration was that they would only give us one bathroom key for everyone on the boat (they said because of key theft), which meant that everyone had to coordinate bathroom visits and return the key to the boat (at the very end of an extremely long dock) before going anywhere else. Why not just have us check out the keys needed and charge a lost (or stolen) key fee at checkout? I feel sorry for the lower level employees here, as I'm sure they don't like treating people this way, most of the workers were very nice, but one of them told me they have a lot of turnover. Marina is located very close to downtown Charleston 4 min drive or 10 minute walk. Staff is very friendly and always responds quickly when requesting assistance with docking. The dock master Elizabeth is very helpful and accommodating. I highly recommend this marina. read more

I stayed here for the weekend with a friend of mine on his boat. We didn't spend too much time on the boat, but I really liked the way the marina was set up, and everything that was on property that we were able to take advantage of. There's a bar and a restaurant right there, so you don't even have to leave. Very nice if you want to have a couple drinks and not drive. There's also a gas station/variety store, also nice and convenient. The restroom and shower facilities were impeccably clean. The shower that I used on the second day could have used some more water pressure, but other than that I have zero complaints. Excited about coming back here again. read more

I agree with a previous poster. Safe Harbor Charleston City Marina is set up for bigger boats. No gasoline, by design. No ice. How does such a big marina run out of ice? Maybe it's because of Covid...but I didn't think they were friendly at all. The marina is huge, so walking to the office is far. I would have absolutely no reason to go back. read more

If you are a catamaran or any boat below 60 feet, they will put you on the outside (typically) and you will break the waves for all the other boat. They put us in the last slip (closest to the coast guard station) on the mega dock. This is the worst slip in the entire place and it is where they usually put the catamarans and per the dockmaster, they do that only because it is easier (whatever that means). They should put catamarans on the north side (closest to the bridge) or inside near the turning basin. Instead they reserve that for charter yachts which during our stay were mostly transiting to the north east. These charter yachts don't typically have the owners on them and the crew could care less where they put them as they use the marina dock hands to deliver all their groceries and ferry them down the dock. Where they put you is a 15 minute walk down the dock just to make it to the parking lot. The dock is so long they actually have advertisements near the gate like billboards. After complaining several times about the outside dock for 2 days, they finally moved us inside. We had already reserved another marina and wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. It's a good thing they moved us inside as when we were leaving to go to the other marina, we saw a small derelict boat that had dragged anchor and floated into the two catamarans at the end right where we were. Absolutely no protection in this marina on the outside and it isn't a slow no wake zone. The dockmaster seems to have no actual boating experience and I'm pretty sure she has never actually docked a boat herself. In fact the longest a dockhand has been here was 1 year per several that I talked to and most had been there less than 3 months. All of them seemed miserable, but very polite. They could use some training as 1/2 of them I saw try to the line opposite to the current first and also don't seem to know what locking down a line is. I talked to a maintenance guy that had been there several years and he said this is the worst the marina has ever been managed and complained the general manager was always out sick and never wanted to come to work. Also the dockmaster was miserable and didn't communicate well. Pluses Courtesy shuttle - although I don't think any of the dock hands driving it have a CDL which is required by state law. Decent WiFi Dockhands very polite Convenient Fueling - Several pumps on the mega dock Negatives Very rolly and unprotected on the outside Dockhands are not trained Mismanaged Pricey Lots of diesel fuel in the water from the fueling boats They stack the boats in really close The water pressure on the dock is terrible and it takes forever to wash down your boat. read more

We had a wonderful experience with the staff of this marina! Can't say enough good things about Bill Darden, the head of the service department. In 50 years of boating we have not had a pro like Bill who could diagnose and fix a number of issues and in a timely manner. He went out if his way in a holiday weekend to help us out! This was tough because it could've been great but there were some external factors so here goes. 1. The weather was bad. Not bad but getting bad. A dark front was coming in as we were about to set sail on our rented boat. I was a little shocked because the guy said "ok you're good. Just pass through the rain". I assumed it would've been a quick little shower.. we had to turn back. I called him to let him know and he was like "yeah it's pretty bad huh?" Um, sir, we are renting a boat from you that is like 17 ft long and there are literally NO OTHER boats on the water. A normal person would've said "yes you should wait 25 min" 2. After all that and getting soaked we set out again. IT IS VERY HARD TO STAY IN THE CHANNEL. If you go like one foot to the right or left your clearance is about 1ft which is not good. We had a nice (somewhat) experience in Shem creek eating and drinking 3. UNTIL I got roofied (not to my knowledge) by Red's. I drank 1/2 a drink a vomited off the back of our boat all within 30 min. I felt FINE before and after that little hiccup. We returned to the dock and the same rental guy says "oh yeah, I've heard of people being randomly roofied there..." AGAIN- HELPFUL INFORMATION! I think if you have a perfect day and skip the margarita at reds you'll be fine. Be cautious though. read more

We rented a boat on our vacation through Charleston Water Fun & this is the marina we used. The staff was friendly & they ride you around on the golf carts to & from your car to the boat, etc. The little Marina Shops are useful too - they have a little gas station with a convenience store attached as well as an ABC store & other shops. The marina can accommodate boats of all sizes, the staff are professional, the facilities are well maintained and the marina is within walking distance of downtown Charleston. If you're passing through or a local looking for a convenient place to keep your boat, Charleston City Marina is a great option. Great Marina. Make sure you are on floating dock as there is a huge tide and pilings don't have tide rings. If you are out on mega dock it's a far walk to land however they will give you a ride on a golf cart if you call them. read more

I have stayed here twice in the past 2 weeks and each time has been unorganized and seemingly a lack of leadership. No where is there posted actual hours of operation. They rarely answer the phone. The shuttle is nice except its only for the peninsula of Charleston. West Marine is a mile over the bridge and its next to a grocery store both within 2.5 miles but you have to call an Uber. read more

The Charleston City Marina was a stop we were looking forward to. We came here after a 2 week trip from Maryland on the water. To meet friends for dinner. We called ahead 2 days before for a reservation. Upon arrival we radioed the Marina requesting the location of our transient slip. Naomi is the girl who answered our call. She assigned us a outside dock. My husband ask for a inside slip since it was windy and choppy. After a very long pause she assigned us inside along the dock. He ask her for entry instructions into the Marina 2 times and she never responded. We figured it out. We found the dock but had no help with lines. We took care of that ourselves. The slip could not have been further away from showers or the office. We ask for a ride to the West Marine store and they could not provide this until the next day at 11 AM. We called Uber. We ask for comp ride into town but it was after 8pm so they could not do that either. Uber again! We left the next morning with no dock help again after 2 calls but we did note after casting off ourselves the staff seemed to be trying to contain a huge diesel fuel spill at the end of the dock. Fuel was in the water everywhere. We saw pink waves in the water all around us. We had already decided this Marina was a loser but we just received a email asking for our shower fob they said we did not return and was charging us $25! We had given it to the deck had on the dock that morning. We live in Hilton Head and I am sure we will go back to Charleston but for sure to another Marina. read more

The Ashley marina is much better suited for large yachts. Stopped here and had issues from the beginning, staff is all high school age with little experience handling lines. and no manager ever came to check on us after someone hit our boat. So thanks for the bad experience city marina. Hopefully others can use this review before booking a stay at this establishment. Floating docks are in rough shape also. read more
