This Safeway location is close to where I am working, and it was here to serve my needs. I have come here for lunch the past two days, and I was glad to see their full service deli, as well as, the ready made deli sandwiches that are very affordable. The last time that I was here I also purchased a case of Polar seltzer water. The line to the self check out area was not so cool, and they only have four self checkout computers. The ambiance is just ok and there is also a Starbucks here which adds to the convenience. The store was clean each time that I've been here. However the area outside of the grocery store appears to be a little dicey. For today's visit I out headed half pound of pasta salad and Utz potatoe chips. read more

This Safeway needs to be critically renovated or closed . Hechinger Mall is a shell of its former self, with limited stores and whoever owns it is clearly waiting until the neighborhood gets to better to invest into it. The Safeway is dirty, sometimes has items that don't look fresh and has limited items compared to other Safeway stores. On top of that if you order your groceries online or from the app, you will probably only get delivered half of the items, or the smaller versions of the items yet you will get charged for all of the items. And In order to get your money back, you'll have to go through both the store and the outsourced customer service number from the app. I would suggest another Safeway. read more

I visited Safeway at this location not long ago and I was taken aback when I saw a lady walk in with a puppy. I did not know they allowed dogs. Don't get me wrong. I love dogs. I own one but I feel that dogs should not be allowed in grocery stores specifically created for humans. Petco and PetSmart are their stores. What I witnessed next threw me for a loop. As we entered and walked a few steps the dog lifted its leg to urinate on items (food) Safeway had outside the aisle. And I said out loud, "OMG" and the owner of the dog said, "he didn't do anything ". Now for those who know anything about dogs, know that that's not the first time that dog has done that in that store. Molded food, roach-infested produce, poor staffing, extremely unsafe environment patrolled by rent-a-cop guards that clearly are not trained to moderate the homeless off of the property so you aren't harassed after shopping. The poor staff are amazing and I've never had an issue with them. They are extremely patient and deserve better management and an even better company that cares for their safety. Please do more to invest in a safer, healthier environment for your customers and more importantly, your employees. read more

For the most part, I can normally find what I am looking for and it is of decent quality. While this Safeway has improved greatly it's employees lack the professionalism and just human decency that customers deserve. Of course, it is not every employee. Most of the regular employees have superior customer service. However, some of the employees need a refresher course or they need to stock because I should never feel as if I am bothering you for asking a question or needing assistance with a purchase. Safeway is one of the main grocery stores in Washington, D.C. and this location is just north of the east end of H Street NE. It's been around for a long time so it's in need of an update. It has a large parking lot (something rare in the city) and the store itself is spacious. They have everything from international food to a bakery to flowers. The location and parking is convenient for last minute things. The product seems to be okay but the raw meats are sketch. I bought some meat and didn't realize it was spoiled until I cooked it. I was in denial because why the meat be spoiled with a proper sell by date? Anyway, I threw it out because it smelled up my house! When I went for a refund with the receipt. They asked for the meat! They gave me the refund, but said next time bring the meat back. It's sad that people probably lie about this all the time, but they have had food storage problems before so it would be great if management just got a hold of that as the root of the issue! Check the dates on everything because some items sell quickly and get restocked, others not popular in that area, might sit on the shelf longer. read more

This Safeway is the worst of all the Safeways. I appreciate that it is in my neighborhood, but I avoid it at. all. costs. unless there is no other option. Be prepared to wait in long lines. Fantastic service at hot deli w Makeda. She was very personable, pleasant and knowledgeable about items in case. Salad bar was fresh, clean, full and presentable. Cashier Scott was very fast and efficient w check out process. By far the worst safeway I have been too. The service is super slow so dont go in there if you dont have time to spare. Does not have self checkout like most. I was soo excited to see that there is a Safeway nearby. When I see Safeway I assume that there will be a wide range of quality ingredients, lots of deals/promos, and reliable staff, all housed in an inviting environment. Right? Heck no. Not today. And not the many times I visited before. There ratio of cashier to patron is always ridiculous and the store is poorly kept. Something spilled or broken or misplaced around every corner. I know, it happens... It would be great to see some manager presence in the store. I have yet to see anyone patrol the aisles assist cashiers, or direct customers. The masses have spoken. This is the worst Safeway. Upon entering, there was some sort of mess on the floor that hasn't been cleaned. Rows of fridge have absolutely nothing in it. Stale food. I bought popcorn and realized they were stale and expired when I brought it home. The bathroom is scary, looks like something you'd see in a thriller movie. It is also very dirty. No soap or paper towels. The bottom wall was punched out. Don't know how that happens. To add on, there was an super secure electronic security lock on the bathroom door. I wandered around the store, and couldn't find anybody to help. Pharmacy said someone will come open the bathroom door, and it wasn't until 10 min later, am employee happen to walk by. Selection and cleanliness are fine but the checkout lines are long and slow with only a fraction of available lanes open and lineups far up the aisles. I come here on Sundays usually after visiting my mom and on my way home and there are hardly ever any shopping carts. used to think it was because it was a Sunday and it may be crowded and their in use. Although, I never saw that many people with carts. Today, being a Saturday, nice weather it's quiet and still no carts. The few (2) I see are sitting in the store broke. I decided I could use a hand basket but none of those at the front either. The security guard told me there are some at the registers well me and another lady went on the hunt to find a hand basket or something to put our groceries in and we passed 5 registers and there we saw about 7. I guess they either don't want you to buy more than you can carry in your hands or find a cart on your own and n the parking lot. read more

I apologize that this review is going to sound like a lecture. However, this Safeway is a perfect example of the many ills of gentrification. OR whatever you wanna call it. It's an absolute travesty that a business can operate like this in any neighborhood. Granted I have been to this particular Safeway one time, I still believe I have a little authority to opine on the level of ridiculousness. The customer service here is horrid. You will be in long lines for days and no one addresses this. The reaction is total apathy. No one cares. I suspect that you would not find this fare in a Safeway in Friendship Heights or another more swankerrific DC neighborhood. It's not OK people. Aptly nick-named "scary Safeway" or the "not-so-Safeway," this store's best attribute is its convenient location. I can also generally count on them having basic items that I may need, but then it's pretty much downhill. I have never had a visit where I don't have to wait in long lines. There is no express line and no self check-out. There always seems to be some disagreement about price, coupons, or other issue requiring extensive negotiations that compound the issue. I will say that the staff has always been friendly and generally seem to be doing their level best. Others have commented on the store condition and availability of items, but I haven't really been affected by this. I'm just struck by the security compound feel of the place. The labyrinth of barricades as you enter is layered by a large security station mediating the single entry/exit point. Basic toiletry items - deodorant, skin cream, etc are under lock and key and many behind the customer service desk. It seems there must be a better way to add appropriate security, provide for reasonable check-out times, and improve the general experience of the store, but it just seems like nobody really cares - or notices. It's consistent with the other stores in this misbegotten car mall, so maybe the entire area is just waiting to go the direction of the strip mall that was between 8th and 10th on H. read more

Over the years, this place really lived up to its names--the "Unsafeway" or "Shoot-Em-Up Safeway." Hey people, if you think it's not so great now, you should have come here ten years ago! The first time my daughter and I shopped here, we were yellow-police-taped into the store due to a shooting in the parking lot (true story). And yet, when I really, really, REALLY need something, I find myself coming back. What I learned -Grab any cart in the lot, even if it's from CVS across the street -Buy only what you can carry to your car because a hustler might start grabbing bags out of your cart to "help" you, expecting a payment for this "service" (another true story) -Don't judge if you're standing behind a woman and you're admiring her authentic $1,000+ Prada bag and matching boots just before she pulls out food stamps to pay for her baby food (true story and her baby was dressed to kill, too) -Most of the food is now removed from the shelf when it's several days past expiration dates (this is a fairly new thing here) -The lines can be long so find a good magazine I'd like to give four stars to: -The guys in the produce department because they're cool. -Most of the cashiers are nice, too (shout out Candace!) read more

If this Safeway were a person, it would be that friend who goes on a health food kick, then goes back to their old eating habits in two week's time. Lemme explain... There's all the typical food you'd find in any supermarket - donuts, chicken wings, spam, milk, bananas. But in each section, there's some food that just doesn't seem in place - extra lean beef, lamb, omega-3 eggs, tofu, pomegranate juice, lychee... all that stuff that looks like a misdelivery intended for Whole Foods. I'll grab all the cheaper stuff - those fantastic packs of bulk chicken parts, bags of frozen vegetables, 18 eggs in a carton (!!!), but every so often I'll find myself reaching for the extra healthy beef, alaskan salmon, $3 naked juices, or even the soy milk (just kidding about the last one). That lasts about one shopping trip before I realize A) it's expensive and 2) I could get it better at Yes or Whole Foods. So yeah, it's a decently stocked Safeway with some random health items scattered about. Take to it like a scavenger hunt. EDIT: They now sell beer at this Safeway. +1 star for that alone. This store is decent. The produce was in good condition. The bathroom was clean. I noticed that there was a "diabetes tour" for those who need to change their eating habits. Just had a horrible customer service experience with Rasheda, who was working the customer service desk this evening. Of course the store is packed with last minute shoppers making sure they have everything. Majority of the people had carts full of stuff, I on the other hand had only 3 little bottles of condiments, I had no produce that needed to be weighed, no frozen food products, just some Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce. Rasheda did not want to ring me up stating that we cannot be wrung up at the customer service desk. Now if this is the case, let this rule be spread amongst your team. I was just there 2 days ago and was able to be rung up at customer service. I do find this highly irritating being as though this is the Holiday Season Nd people do not want to stand in line for 30-35 minutes with only two items when customer service isn't busy at all!! read more

Hands down one of the worst grocery stores in existence let alone in the DC area. Lazy, unprofessional, rude, and downright dumb staff. It's shocking that this place has been in business this long and it has only gotten worse. Literally has now been reduced to 2 checkout lanes out of 10. This is a safeway. It is no picnic. You want a parsnip? forget about it. i agree with all the other reviews and Jim B's characterization. I continue to be frustrated with the produce offerings at this location, and I've left this store empty handed. Usually I enjoy grocery shopping and was at least interested in checking out this location, particularly because it's in walking distance to my place. But safeways do not qualify as fun and this one is no exception. my impression was that this store looked nicer and more updated than i expected, and was stocked about as well as other safeways in the district. if you're coming on foot, you have to cross this large, weird intersection. the store is in the back of the shopping center. there is plenty of parking. A big problem for me about Safeway in general is that i can buy better quality food at lower prices at Whole Foods and of course, Trader Joes. it is yet another Safeway of last resort. it is there. read more

I was very excited that there was a grocery store within walking distance from my new home. I was previously living in an area that required a car to get the grocery store and I believed my food troubles were over. I was dead wrong. First the parking lot is very disorganized. There are carts everywhere and somehow there is this huge SUV (old) parked in this coned off area that is just creepy. They also cone off a large part of the lot. The lines need to be repainted in the lot and there should be someone who tries to organize the rogue shopping carts. I think half of the safeway sign actually lights up so it reads "Safe," which is funny because it certainly does not feel very safe. This Safeway is horribly managed. First of all I understand that there may be a theft issue but why do I feel as though I am entering a poorly run militarized zone to go grocery shopping. The security station at the front of the store always has some disengaged security employee or employees working there. As soon as you enter and pass the security guards you are in the baked and ready foods section. The different piles of food (and yes I wrote piles because that's how it should be described because they resemble piles and not the typical towers usually found in grocery store) are all disarranged and sparse. The meat selection is comical and the fruits and vegetables are not fresh. The produce will certainly go bad quickly. The aisles always have boxes of unpacked goods in them and there seems to be no urgency to clean up the aisles. It seems to me that the manager or ordering manager has chosen items that he or she believes are popular for their customers. They choose to have a large selection of chips, cookies, juices, soda and other snack foods but not very much in the way of actual real food. I will say that the Safeway does have a selection of gluten free items. Kudos! The lines are always out of control and the employees look miserable. I understand customer service is difficult- I did it for many years but part of your job is to serve people with a smile. I know there are awful people out there who will be rude but I really believe you should treat every customer like you would treat your mother. It makes the day go by faster and it also gives people the benefit of the doubt. I consider myself a very nice customer, I always say hello, how are you? Are you in the beginning of your shift or the end? I then comment and say that's great that you're near the end of if near the beginning I say good luck, I know it's going to be a hard day. But my goodness the Safeway employees at this location act as though I am the worst person ever and don't want to engage in any conversation and they don't even smile and acknowledge my questions or hello. This Safeway serves as a huge issue that many lower social economic communities have to deal with and that is the access to real food. While there may be a grocery store in the community, I feel as though there is a food dessert in this area. I will have to see if the Aldi is more promising. read more

One of the few Safeways in the area... I have had many incidents here. Never any help around. And when you find someone you're told it's not my job...maybe they're short staffed. I was told I cannot buy cigarettes no ID...I'm in my 60's...I then asked my wife to pay for them because she had her ID. They said "no" to her because she's getting them for me! Talk about idiots then take a trip to the bright spot at Hechinger's mall. Service is so bad my grandkids hate going there. Jim B. has a pretty accurate description of this Safeway- it's like a fat person that goes on a health kick. If you've read my review of Whole Foods (or, Why I hate Corn Syrup) you will understand why it takes me about three hours to navigate this grocery store everytime I come, (I'm like that snake video game, trying to avoid corn syrup and transfats in a sea of processed foods) but I can't hate because Safeway delivers. First of all, it's right in my 'hood - a ten minute walk maximum, which is great for me. Secondly, its selection is never that terrible. I can always find inexpensive fresh pasta, and some organic/gourmet items to hold me over until my next WF trip. The worst part about this Safeway is that the ice cream freezer is always frozen over to a complete glacier. Sometimes I feel like I should have brought an ice pick to get some Haagen Dazs out. And I always get freezer burn on my hand afterward. The best part is that every single time, without exception, the cashiers are always warm and sweet. read more
