The bartender was an absolute delight and chatted to us about her favourite spots around Melbourne while she whipped up our drinks. The Alderman is large but feels small and intimate - cosy spots at the bar or in the window and the booths along the side make it a perfect date spot or for an after dinner drink. It was very quiet when we popped in (I think we may have been the only people in the whole venue) however I have walked past on a Saturday night and seen people spilling out the door and on to the street.

The atmosphere and setting put it near the top. Delicious cocktails and an excellent wine list are well worth looking at, but for me, I can't go past the small (but mighty) dinner menu. Last week a friend and I shared the blue swimmer crab dumplings with lemon myrtle with Vietnamese mint and tomato consommé to start ($14), followed by the parmesan gnocchi with sage butter, asparagus, mushrooms and macadamia nuts ($23.50). I have to say that the highlight was the dessert: lavender crème brûlée with berry salad ($11). There seems to be a fashion for lavender flavoured sweets at the moment. The inside seems to be quite eclectic, with numerous stuffed animals around the place, and there are also a few private booths, if you can grab one that is (you generally have to arrive pretty early). There is a balcony but all the smokers tend to gravitate out here, even on the less crowded times. It's a great pub, but only when it isn't packed.
