We swung by Sago in downtown Encinitas the other night and it was next-level. Located right on the main strip (485 S Coast Hwy) it has that perfect "in the heart of Encinitas" energy. The newly-redone bar looked amazing: sleek, modern, with a vibe that says "let's elevate this night." Now for the fun part: the drinks. My wife and I tried a caramelized-pineapple-tequila cocktail and honestly, one of the best we've had in a while. So good we were already scheming our next visit. Food wise: you've got to try the fried chicken and caviar, this dish was everything. Juicy Japanese-style fried chicken with lemongrass aioli, topped with chive Kaluga caviar. And the cucumber salad (Japanese Persian cucumbers with maple-miso serrano ponzu, crispy sesame and herbs) added a crisp, fresh counterpoint. This place is truly remarkable. The theme is such a vibe. Diego was our server and he was so friendly and helpful with suggestions. Natalie was also checking in on us constantly and made us feel important and prioritized. Service was honestly 10/10. I recommend the lobster baos they were pretty good. My wife and I went to SAGO recently to celebrate our 7-year anniversary, and it was an absolute blast from start to finish. The vibe is exactly what we were looking for--casual but still upscale, with that polished feel that makes it perfect for a special night out. We were seated at the bar, and honestly it ended up being the best spot in the house. The service was super attentive, friendly, and made the whole experience feel effortless and celebratory without being over the top. The highlight for me was the Wagyu NY steak--it was amazing. We came here for the first time on Friday night to celebrate my Bday weekend. Sexy, dark ambience, great DJ playing dancey lounge tunes. Gorgeous place! Look up - the starry ceiling is so beautiful! We ended up in an upstairs velvet booth, which made me feel like royalty. Aysha was our server and was really amazing, and recommended great drinks & food. I got the #8 drink I believe...it had vodka and pink peppercorn and was delicious, not too sweet. My fiance got Sago's version of an old fashioned - realllly strong and tasty. We had the ceviche and it was delicious, and the little rice cracker things that come with were also amazing (they crackle when the ceviche juice hits them haha). The lobster bao buns (we chose without recommendation, just sounded nice) were just ok, but not worth $10/bun (the order is $30 and comes with 3 buns the size of a golf ball each) - they needed to be larger with more sauce of some kind for flavor, in my opinion. The cucumber salad Aysha recommended was delicious and light. Overall, this is a sexy place to go, but don't go on an empty stomach. The food is pricey for how small the plates are, so it's not a place for a full meal. Nice for cocktails and very light eats. After eating upstairs, we sat at the downstairs bar and enjoyed the music and some more drinks. Came here for the nightlife, not the food, so my review is focused on the vibe. The space itself is nice and the service at the bar was solid, but the music was a letdown. It was almost all techno, which made it feel repetitive after a while. I wish they mixed it up more and broadened the spectrum with different genres to keep the energy going. Ambiance is beautiful but the half round benches will leave your legs numb and wanting to leave vs. stay and pay. Vibes are high but that's probably because there is coke on the ledge above the urinals. Oh and while you're in there, watch your step! It was a lovely experience to not only be smelling piss but also to be standing in it. Yet, the hand towels are soft as can be. Like I said, the place is confused. Has a lot of potential with the chefs, staff and location but management is missing the mark. If it's cocktails and instagram photos you want, this place will scratch that itch but if it's a culinary dining experience where you're ok paying top dollar, I'd look elsewhere. read more

Ordered the cucumber salad, which was extremely overwhelming with seasoning, and the pickled aspect was not good which how can you mess up cucumber salad then we had the sashimi which was maybe five pieces of tuna in the similar sauce as the cucumber salad with one tomato on the side, and two leaves of cilantro it locked a lot of flavor. The tuna was not of the high-quality to just have such a little flavor attributed to it then we ordered the noodles which were good but for $20 for the noodles was not worth it and the sashimi was 26 and was extremely not worth it. My boyfriend and I had a reservation for 9:45 on Valentine's day--and even though we were early, we were not let in until 10:30 because the restaurant was at capacity. We were unaware that the restaurant was turning into a club at this time, but even if that were the case, they should've still been able to honor our reservation. There were also multiple lines for some reason and no one really knew what was going on or where to go. There were no staff members directing people either. When we were finally seated, the hostess led us to a long table that seated 5 other couples! On Valentine's day! If you're looking for a fun club-esque dinner spot, SAGO is where it's at. With its live DJ, bar seating, and low light vibes, it definitely feels like you're at a club. If you're like me and don't like the super loud music and bustling noises of people, this place may not be for you, but if you get seated upstairs it is a little less noisy (you just compromise view / vibes for a more peaceful dining experience). Last note for the ambiance, is that it is very cramped and tables are super close to one another. Enough with the vibes and now with the food. - Hamachi Ceviche: This ceviche was super refreshing. The sesame rice crisps that it comes with was so much more delightful than tortilla chips. You get the light airy crunch from them that doesn't take away from the flavors of the ceviche and they don't shred your mouth apart like razor blades. The fish was super tender and in the perfect little cubes. The jalapeños do give a kick so if you don't like spice, refrain from eating them. I do wish the ceviche was a little more acidic, but overall this was my favorite dish of the night 9/10. - Grilled Hiramasa: This dish was so good. The fish was super tender and fell apart at the touch. The tomatoes were cooked nicely and everything was well seasoned. The only concern was that out of the 2 bok choys, 1 was seemingly too tough. Super happy with the dish overall, but again for those that don't like spice maybe see if they can reduce the spice level because it was spicy but I love spice! 8/10 - Crying Tiger Steak Skewers: The steak was cooked incredibly and was very tender and well seasoned. The salad was fresh but ours was drenched in a puddle of dressing and became extremely acidic and soggy as we continued eating. Overall 7.5/10 Our server Lamar was awesome. Always letting us know that he'd be with us shortly and apologizing, super friendly, and made sure to check on us multiple times. TLDR: Look at the bullet point food items we got, but overall everything was seasoned well and enjoyable. Can be really loud and cramped in the restaurant, but that's what you expect from a club vibe. Dishes are "shareable", but imo they are great for 2 people but no more (small portions). The food at Sago was generally good, but the portions were small for the high prices. We ordered the lobster bao bun, ceviche, and steak. The bao bun was the highlight--flavorful and well-executed. The ceviche and drinks were forgettable, and the steak, though very tender, lacked seasoning and depth. The real issue, however, was the service. We had an 8:30 reservation but weren't seated until 8:50. Less than an hour into our meal, we were told we needed to vacate our table for a large party. Staff members repeatedly came over--three separate people within a span of a few minutes--pressuring us to move mid-drink. I politely explained that I was just finishing my drink and waiting for my husband to return from the restroom, but they continued to rush us. This was incredibly rude and unprofessional, especially after spending over $280. We weren't even at our table for a full hour, yet we were made to feel unwelcome and hurried out. Why couldn't the incoming group wait, just like we had to? I noticed in another review that someone else had a similar experience, so this seems to be a recurring issue. Sago needs to find a more respectful way to manage their seating. No guest should be pressured to leave their table in the middle of their evening. So walking into SAGO last night, I gave our server Trista a heads-up that we might be a bit of a handful. What happened next went far beyond my expectations. Trista was an absolute gem. She not only embraced the challenge with warmth and grace, but went above and beyond to ensure my grandmother felt comfortable, cared for, and seen. She picked up a few French phrases to make my grandmother smile, kindly lowered the music just a notch to ease the sensory load, and checked in often with a gentle attentiveness that never felt rushed or performative. As for the food--this was my fifth visit to SAGO, and the quality remains stellar. The tuna tartare was bright and delicate, the hamachi ceviche was balanced and refreshing, and the lobster bao buns were pillowy perfection. The cocktails were well-made, layered, and not overly sweet. But what stood out most this time wasn't the excellent food--it was the care. Maybe ten minutes after we arrived, some guy who was clearly already drunk, bulldozed his way and started yammering to the poor bartender. Overall the drinks were delicious but I found the food portions lacking. We ordered the lobster bao buns and the noodles. The lobster buns were delicious however there were only two, which I found overpriced for what we got. The noodles were also good, I found these to be more bland but still good with a tiny sauce dish on the side. For what we paid, at least food wise, I feel the portions could've been a bit bigger. Took me 30 more minutes to get this resolved and since it was a split check, they could only refund to one card. In total, it took us three hours to get through this. This was a super bummer of a birthday. We ended up actually paying for the dessert as well, we waited so long and wanted to cancel but couldn't, as nobody checked up on us for a long time. I didn't want to make a big deal and ask for the manager, I wish I had so that these issues could have been resolved. Instead of a fun night, we had three hours full of mistakes and waiting. The hottest new restaurant and lounge in Encinitas! SAGO is serving up asian fusion dishes alongside delicious specialty cocktails, all while providing a dark and sultry ambiance - perfect for date night or a girls night out! - PARKING - We got lucky and found a spot right around the corner. There's a decent amount of street parking, but there are paid lots if you can't find a spot! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - We had a reservation at 7pm, and tried to check-in at 6:50pm. The hostess said reservations are so packed back-to-back that they would need to seat us closer to the dot, which just speaks volumes to how popular this spot is! We got called in right at 7pm, and wow you immediately get immersed into this mysterious, vibey atmosphere with the dim lighting and tropical house playing. There's a variety of seating arrangements, from high tops to bar seating to private couches in the back. We wanted to eat food so we opted for one of the high tops for table space. Our server was very kind and patient with us, and suggested we order just a few dishes at a time so that we don't overcrowd the table. We had multiple rounds of food orders, and our server was on top of it! I will say there were times when the music was just slightly loud so we had to either lean in to listen to one another or speak louder than usual. - FOOD/DRINK - N2: This was my favorite out of the drinks we ordered because it had a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness along with the alcohol! N9: This was my fiance's favorite, and although I also liked it, I think I preferred the more refreshing drinks! N13: I wish the Balsamic Vinegar came out more, but maybe I just needed to stir it because it might have been sitting on the bottom. Tuna Sashimi: The sashimi quality is pretty good! I also liked the balance between the tart ponzu and the sweet tomatoes! Lobster Bao Buns: I was looking for more lobster in each bun, but the flavors were good! Grilled Black Cod: Flaked off so nicely, cooked to perfection! Yellowtail Crudo: I personally like Yellowtail more than Tuna, so this was more up my alley! Wagyu Skewer: Each order has 2 skewers, so don't make our mistake and order two of them and end up with 4! However we ended up having a happy mistake because these skewers are so tender and deliicous! Wagyu Tartare: This might have been my favorite dish of the night - that Tom Yum Aioli is out of this world!!! So good, so fresh, and loved the rice crackers that we ate it with! Japanese Sweet Potato: This was probably my least favorite - the potatoes were very dry inside and crumbled when we bit into them. The Lime Crema was delicious though, but couldn't save the potatoes. Mie Goreng: Loved these noodles, the chew of them and the flavoring! Had me wanting more!
