it's my first time leaving a yelp review! i honestly just had to commend this store for being so helpful and kind. i called last week to see if they had the ingredients i was looking for and they did! i went in the store yesterday and i was in awe as a grocery store lover myself. i got the ingredients and the cashier actually recommended a better substitute for one of the products i had chosen. a mishap happened when i left the store and either one of my products wasn't bagged by the cashier or i forgot to take it. either way i called today and relayed my issue, and they said i could come in. i immediately told the store what happened and a nice man helped me to the aisle for the product and told me how to make my food taste better! 10/10 service! i will be back read more

How could I have never been to this classic NY establishment until now?! I've always heard of and seen this place while driving down Atlantic Ave and always say I want to go but never have. My co-workers and I have made it a point to take walks during lunch; this has been one of the spots we go to. It's such a wonderful place for Mediterranean groceries and hot food. The lunch plates are pricey but well worth it, you could definitely split the meals into 2. I also love their selection of spices and oils and the bulk coffee and nuts. My friend has gotten me hooked on the chocolate-covered espresso beans. SO good! The baklava is out of this world! As a New Yorker, you know this is a Brooklyn institution. Opened for decades, with the cheapest prices for fresh meals, ethnic snacks, and desserts, it's truly beloved. The must-get things: - the bourekas and baba ganoush in the hot food area: made all day, have them warm the bourekas so they're divine when you eat them, and add pita to dip with a baba ganoush so you can eat them on a beach outside in a jiffy - the (what I call) grabby-baggy goodies; the dark chocolate-covered cherries are UNREAL - sweet and rich - and the dried papaya and dark chocolate-covered raisins are awesome and come in little plastic bags you can walk and reach into. I am in such love with Sahadi's - but the love is to be shared with all! Part ethnic grocery store, part prepared foods, part coffee, part dessert - omg gimme everythinggggg. They have so many wonderful things here - ingredients to make Middle Eastern or Greek food, frozen foods that you can eat up for parties or dinner (parties for one), already cooked foods and things like Baklava, my reason for today's visit. My cousin loves Baklava and I came here to purchase the ingredients to make my own. If it doesn't come out good, I'll just come back and buy it pre made. The prices are so reasonable! The Phyllo dough was on $2.60 per box. In this neighborhood, that is amazing. I love shopping local and I love this place. Tip: check in for a free hot coffee with $20 purchase. read more

The bottom layers of their Baklava are completely soaked in a delicious, sweet honey syrup, with an ever-so-light dusting of cinnamon. Sahadi's is a well laid out Middle Eastern specialty store with decorative, wooden signs above each station for cheese, sweets, olives, dried fruits and nuts. I can only base my review on my quick in-and-out visit. Prices are typical for a Middle Eastern shop- though mixed fruit and nuts may seem a bit overpriced, at least I know I'm not getting stale almonds, cashews or tasteless dried fruit! Sahadi's makes the best, most delicious hummus you've ever had. Yes, they spell it houmus, but that has no bearing on the flavor. As a matter of fact, everything Sahadi's stocks seems to be stellar, from olives to spices to amazing moussaka and babaghanouj to CHEAP everything else. The last time I went in, I was standing in line at the deli counter, and since I know what it means to miss New Orleans, I impulsively went for a bit of jambalaya in addition to the hummus. When I brought it up to the cashier, she made a disgusted face and said, "What is THAT?!" I thought that slightly odd, since she works there and it was clearly one of their products. But I was unfazed; I took it home and shoveled it into my face anyway. And it tasted wonderful. Take that, cashier woman. read more

Just stopped into Sahadi's for their phase 2 reopening. The store has been reconfigured to allow more circulation of customers in the bulk goods area, and provide protection for the cashiers and the other workers. At this point I am a long-time (17 years), regular customer and I still love this place. Just want to add a few comments: 1. Sahadi's, please review the salt content in your nuts and seeds! The salted pumpkin seeds and pistachios are INSANELY SALTY, they taste practically toxic. It's been this way for a couple of years at least. 2. During the pandemic, Sahadi's streamlined its bulk offerings and deli counter, removed the great old olive counter, and overall seems to have reduced the variety of food in the store a bit. It's too bad, all of those changes are for the worse from my point of view. But still many great things to buy here. read more

Sahadi's is one of those gems that makes you feel like there's nowhere else on Earth quite like New York. The breadth and quality of food there is phenomenal, delicious, and reasonably priced for what itis. The sad thing is that Sahadi's probably couldn't exist today if they didn't own their property; stores like Sahadi's would have to either vastly raise their prices, or go out of business. A little history: In 1895, Abrahim Sahadi opened A. Sahadi & Co. on Washington St., Lower Manhattan to cater to the needs of the Syrian-Lebanese community of the area. His nephew, Wade, then opened Sahadi Import Co. on Washington St. In 1948, with construction of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel underway, much of the community was uprooted and displaced; Sahadi Import Co. and much of the Syrian-Lebanese community moved to Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. The same family he continued to run Sahadi's for the past 120+ years. Sahadi's sell more than just spices and canned food. You'll find a wide variety of fresh, pickled vegetables, cheeses, meats, nuts, chocolates, olive oil, coffee, package speciality foods, sweets, ice cream (including Arabic ice cream sometimes!), etc. Sahadi's has a facility that properly roasts nuts and a butcher shop that delivers quality. I have been going to Sahadi's for over 25 years, long before it was a go-to destination and when it was still a one-store entity. Prices have climbed, as have the number of people buying here, so it is crowded, but a fun-buzz kind of crowded, and, even with the high prices, I know I can find a great selection of Middle Eastern, Eastern European, Kosher, non-Kosher, etc. products, cheeses, hot foods, salads, many freshly baked/made on the premises, most imported. My only disappointment is that they now have a limited selection of leben/labneh (Middle Eastern yogurt), it is not locally sourced and therefore, not as unique-tasting as I like it to be. read more

Sahadi's, an Atlantic Ave. fixture since 1948, is an absolute must for anyone who loves to cook, drinks coffee, or enjoys snacking on delicious things. It is both a fest for the eyes, and eventually, your dining table. Because of the boutique-y feel of the place, one might suspect that it would be a bit pricey. While some luxurious tidbits do reside within, the shop is not nearly as expensive as it has every right to be. Some things are just an absolute steal. The kinds of products Sahadi's sells are obvious from the moment you walk in, greeted by a wide selection of nuts and candies. Just behind are an olive/pickle bar, and a room filled with delightful cheeses. Next, you may come face to face with a set of counters filled with specialty baked goods of middle eastern influence and origin, but for me, the real treasures are tucked in the center at the front of the store: spices and coffee beans. There is, in my mind, almost no reason to shop for these things elsewhere, unless by some chance they don't have what you're looking for. While there are a few specialty sausages and so forth in cold cases near the register, the meat offerings are somewhat limited. If you're looking for lamb merguez or some like of boudin, though, you're in business. If you're able to walk through Sahadi's and leave empty handed, I salute your resolve, but you should be kinder to yourself. read more

I live in the area, and it took me over a year to get to Sahadi's - I will now spend at least a year kicking myself for that dumb decision. To give you an example of how big of idiot I have been, I paid $20 for 1.5 oz of ground cardamom at Brooklyn Fare, then almost passed out when I saw that it was $5.75 for 3 oz at Sahadi's. This store is seriously a gold mine. As I looked around, I was able to find basically every item you could get at a grocery store, aside from fresh produce and meat, but again, at a cheaper price. Sahadi's offers a wide range of products in bulk for amazingly low prices, including coffee beans, nuts, dried fruit, candy, and olives. The store is neatly packed with every condiment your heart could ever desire, cheeses and smoked sausages, pastas, canned goods, beer, pickled, salted, and smoked fish, pâtés, a bustling deli counter, a bakery section, teas, freezer full of exotic foods, and sweets I rarely see in USA, but grew up eating overseas. Look, I could go on frantically ranting about my newly found obsession with this place, but the best advice I could give anyone is to just check Sahadi's out for themselves. It was kaffir lime leaves in a fancy Gordon Ramsay recipe that finally brought me here, but I will be returning to this store regularly for more mundane grocery needs from now on. read more

Marvelous deli. Quality products with incredible prices, with so much variety. Very thankful that I got recommended here by a stranger. He tells me, "Sahadi's, its the best hummus in brooklyn!"... bold statement Roberto. So I took a few months to make my way over here and check it out Best. Decision. Of my week.... The hummus is so fresh and tasty. Very subtle flavors creep in, so well rounded and not competing on the palette. Smooth and creamy.. 1lb for ~$5!! Wow. I knew a while ago I'd never go back to store bought, and now I wont even try making it myself. The spicy variant is also delicious.. Excited to come back and try more from the vast array. Coffee selections seemed top notch, had homemade nut-butter (great deal on almond butter, which I'll certainly get next time). Olive bar looked scrumptious, as well the pastries and baked goods at the deli. Theres a reason its been in business this long. The layout is quite a mess, but charming in its own right. There are 3 basic pockets you can walk into, each with its own specialty items. Prompt staff there to bag and weight everything you get, so no hassle with product numbers or the whole mess. This was always my ideal place to shop. So I made a special trip to Brooklyn Heights and found fewer items with prices even higher than expected. Seriously, Fresh Direct's cheese and olives are less expensive (or the same prices) and they will cut it to order! They used to have their own label Tahini paste and now they only have plastic jars from who knows where. Fewer products, less staff and higher prices. Here's the 411 on Sahadi's. It's definitely a neighborhood treasure, but not for the reason everyone thinks it is. Sure, you can get nuts and dried fruits here (if you like Middle Eastern nuts held up against your chin? Dubai. That's all I have to say), but the price either ranges from meh to damn. If you want cheaper, Little Bukharia (Rego Park in Queens) usually does cheaper and slightly better in quality, as does 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge. For those who thinks it's a halal butcher... No. That's more towards the mosque on Atlantic and 3rd Avenue. In fact, I think the Sahadi guys are Mammonite Christians since they are close to the Syrian church down the block, and I remember seeing pork in their charcuterie/deli sections. A Levantine sweet shop? No, the better choice is El Sham in Astoria, which has fresher kunafe and tastier baklava. Is it a middle eastern market? Kinda - but if you want better selections, Balady foods in Bay Ridge or the northern stretches of Steinway Street in Astoria (i.e. stores like Tanjawi) is the better bet, both in terms of pricing or purely in terms of selection. So then, it's not the cheapest place to buy dried fruits and nuts, it's not a halal butcher, and it's not a middle eastern market...so what exactly is it? Well, I put it in the same category as Kaluystan in Curry Hill, Dual Specialty in the East Village or Parrot foods in Sunnyside - they are good gourmet food markets with an inclination towards certain ethnicities. In the case of Kaluystan/DS, it's goods from the Indian subcontinent, For Parrot foods it leans toward the Balkans. For Sahadi's it's toward the Levant, but it does sells gourmet goods from Western European nations. The same story goes for all 4 - they all carry subsets of each other's goods, but each carries something that the other does not have. Each of them has a supermarket "shadow" catering to its mainstream customers (Patel Brothers for Indian subcon goods, Titan in Astoria for the Balkan goods, Balady for the Levant stuff), but they are also diverse enough to carry the gourmet flavors. You might be tempted to compare it to, say, Eli Zabar's up in the UWS, but Zabars cater to the Askenazi palette, so their product selection is a bit different as well. I would say that they are equals. Need some Ras Al Hanout (spice mix common in Moroccan cooking)? They have it. How about some slivered almonds for doing rice pilaf? At the front, take a number. Need Ackawi or Halloumi cheese? They have it too. Now how about some fine salami and a wheel of brie? Sahad's has that (well, Parrot will carry that too, but then parrot also sell Turkish Sujuk, which Sahadi's will not). McVitie's digestives and/or Vimto syrups? Sahadis has it. How about coffee syrups? Sahadi's has more choices (not as much as Kaluystan, even though it's cheaper here). Sahadi's also stock local Brooklyn goods like Steve's Key Lime Pies. Just look around and ask questions. Okay, here's the part where I mention the hidden treasure that is Sahadi's - check out the baked goods section. You can actually get a very decent sandwich for not much, and then jump on the B63 bus to Pier 6 of Brooklyn Bridge Park for a picnic on a beautiful day. In fact, ask for some of their cheap and tasty Zaatar pies (~$2.25 each) warmed up, cut into slices and foil wrapped, grab some hummus from the deli counter, maybe a piece of baklava or some kunafe, a bottle of gourmet soda or 2, and head to the lawn at Pier 6 with a towel so you can lay down with a book and just chill. On the way back stop by Ample Hills Ice Cream or Atlantic Chipshop for a pint. Hell, it's a cheap date and my lady enjoy herself quite a bit. See what I mean? First, most of the people here are super helpful but there was one chick that clearly had her last nerve shattered like glass at a fancy party where an argument broke out. Give her space clearly. Not sure who Ben is but it is local and I'm going to try his block of butter and cream cheese. I'm not Paula Dean but I'll do my best with this block. Sahadi's has a great selection of products what they excel at are middle eastern, asian, and Mediterranean products. They also have a wide selction of cheeses, candies, and nuts. They had a pretty good selection of breads and pastries at their bakery as well. For me it is where I go for the details. I buy the meat and produce elsewhere and visit sahadis to get the right spices, hard to find ingredients and accoutrements. Its also pretty affordable compared to most other places in BK that sell 20 kinds of olive oil. read more

Oh My Damn. Sahadi's, you are the devil. I used to come here 10 years ago to get food for other people from the back. I needed some uneccessarry snacks, so I thought I'd hit up their bulk section. I didn't have to take a number, but they have any and everything you want - different kinds of flour, spices, dried fruits, everything. I kind of went crazy with the sweets and got zataar bread ( omg, so good), a pecan bar, various nuts and dried figs and an eggplant pie...I also got a samosa. This place has it all for most of your North African/ Middle Eastern needs. The people are really friendly and if you go during the early morning during the week it's in and out. This gem of a grocery store (are you reading this, Key Food?) sells a bounty of tempting gourmet goods like spices, nuts, olives, coffee beans, cheeses, and imported indulgences that you probably haven't seen since your last trip abroad. The store's prepared foods are, for the most part, ballpark hits. Try the hummus; it's hummus as hummus should be (damn delicious, that is). Here's the downside. Sahadi's is no secret (it's been open for 50 years), and sometimes shopping there can feel like a visit to your local zoo. If you're not feeling aggressive, either wear a helmet or don't go on the weekend. I'm telling you: It gets rough. The store also closes at 7pm and is never open on Sundays, so actually getting inside those golden doors can be tricky -- tricky, but worth it. This is a five-star establishment, Yelpers. This place is absolutely amazing! They are very reasonably priced. They have a huge selection of bulk spices, grains, seeds, nuts and olives. The staff is helpful and friendly. The only downside is that it can get very crowded on the weekends but it's a small price to pay for the wonderful selection of products. Also Sahadi's has just been renovated and it has been redone really well. The new layout is much more open which has made the crowds more manageable. read more

The best place for Mideastern products in the city. It's like stepping off of Atlantic Avenue and into downtown Beirut (in a good way!) Sahadi's has an amazing selection of regional staples like hummus, tehina, labane, pita, honey cakes, etc as well as boatloads of spices, nuts, and grains. They also carry a lot of stuff you never see in any regular supermarket, such as rice stuffed tomatoes, pickled beets, and red pepper and eggplant spread. Finally, their olive oil selection is second to none. We picked up one from Lebanon (Saifan I think) which was probably one of the most flavorful I've ever had. I'm a bit biased because Sahadi's ended up being the only store out of many (in 3 different boroughs, mind you) that I could find sour plums. I had a craving for them, they are something I enjoyed quite a bit in my childhood but have never been able to find stateside- but I figured in NYC it should be no problem. Ended up being more of a difficult attempt than I thought- but Sahadi's delivered. Not only that, but the service there is really efficient and friendly, and their selection is wide and diverse. This place is great because it has a wide variety of spices available. I was able to find a hard to find spice there, all natural (no additives), purely made of spice (no oils or anything added).. so it was perfect for me. Everyone wears masks in this store. They have hand sanitizer by the front door. And the customer service is really great.. the cashiers are super friendly. But the reason I am giving them 3 stars is they are a very overpriced for their olive oil, I can get twice the amount of olive oil same quality from same country, etc for the same amount from the store where I go to get my olive oil from. Also they offer free shipping / delivery online but you have to order atleast $25 worth of stuff. What if you don't want to buy $25 of their stuff? Been a customer for 25+ years. Products are quality prices still good but not the bargain of back in the day. No more "hidden gems." Gourmet shops, both clicks and bricks, will sell you everything in the store. The one star is because the staff just sucks. The staff USED to be a reason to go here - they knew the regulars, made recommendations "You always get Kalamata olives, try these Lebanese ones." Now they mope, pick their teeth, check out the babes. They'd rather be doing anything other than standing in Sahadi's and grinding your coffee, or putting olives in a plastic container. My hard-earned cash will never go in the pockets of these ingrates again. We put together a fun charcuterie/smorgasbord-right next to a wonderful wine shop that paired up nicely. Picked up some baked goodies as well! Extremely over priced. Not worth it. They sell stuffed grape leaves individually for .95 each. That is unheard of!
