After 18 hours of a plane, a train, and an automobile, I found this place within walking distance…read moreof my hotel. Located at one end of a mall, this Vietnamese restaurant is small but vibrant. Several waitresses were quite attentive and cheerful. To me, soup is comfort food and nothing beats a bowl of beef pho after a tiring, cold day. The small-ish bowl of dac biet pho had a great beef flavor all the way around. Broth was not too rich and perfect balance of spices (hints of cinnamon, clove, and star anise). The meatballs tasted like beef (not the tasteless, spongy meat mass offered in some US pho restaurants), the brisket pieces were tender, tripe tasted "clean", and the raw beef was sliced thinly enough to give it a nice texture. Only slightly negative thing worth mentioning is that the pho was €20 ($22) for what we would consider a small bowl in the US ... but hey, this is Amsterdam, one of the world's great cities. Several appetizers in the menu. I tried the beef rice paper spring rolls. The rice crepe wrapper was a little too chewy, so next time, I will go with another small dish. Bottom line, this place offers a very very good bowl of comforting beef pho for the next time you are near (~ 0.5 miles) the Station Zuid area of Amsterdam.

It was lunch time and was hungry so the friend I was with suggested coming here as their lunch time…read moredeals were pretty good at under €10 for a bowl of pho and a sandwich. Unfortunately, the majority of the options for the lunch specials had the pho made from beef stock, and I don't eat beef so There was either a chicken porridge or a Tofu Pho option and that was it for the €10 lunch time deal! Plus it's not that many tables, so we had around a 20 minute wait until a table opened up. So did my shopping and then came back in 20mins and I got a veggie pho, with pork, rather than a lunch special plus a lemongrass tea drink so overall cost for me was €15 rather than the €10. I didn't think the pork that I added on tasted that great so might just stick with something else next time. Thought my lemon grass tea was also over kill - honestly it tasted delicious but shouldn't have got more liquid when had just got a big bowl of soup. Service was quick and efficient - lots of young adults doing the serving. Oh, also the loos are located upstairs and tiny! Side Note - found when went to another Saigon Càphê (there are 3 in Amsterdam), that it's part of a chain of 4 different kinds of Asian restaurant, so get the loyalty card! The Servers here didn't mention it to us at all!! Yelp 201/ 2018

I came here on a Monday evening and it wasn't too busy. There were a lot of people speaking English…read moreand most of the waitstaff also only spoke English. No inferences there, just an observation. Like other Vietnamese places, the food is mediocre and just resembles authentic dishes but doesn't have the full taste of it. Overall, I recommend you go to Little Saigon instead. Yes, it isn't as pretty but the food is better. Food: 3/5 I had the pho with raw beef and it was okay. The raw beef is added to the soup and then the soup finishes cooking the beef at the table, ensuring your meat is tender. The soup was hot but not super flavorful, the beef was tasty but it should have been thinner. TIPS: Do not get the mihoen dishes (vermicelli), they have absolutely no flavor. Also do not get the banana, coconut dessert. The banana is a dry plantain just sitting in coconut milk. Service: 3/5 I was here with my Dutch classmates and we spoke to the waitstaff in Dutch, but despite the fact we spoke perfectly correct Dutch, they could not understand us and kept talking to us in English. Turns out they don't really speak Dutch... *sigh* Though that isn't their fault, I gave them a lower score because it was hard to get their attention. There wasn't that many people and anytime we needed anything, we had to wave our hands in the air for 10 minutes before we got anyone's attention. Atmosphere: 4/5 The decor is nice and it seems relatively new. It also isn't very noisy so you can actually talk to your friends. Value: 3/5 The pho was €15, super expensive! Appetizers were also around €6 each and they were small.

There are finally more Vietnamese restaurants open in Amsterdam. I heard mixed reviews about this…read morerestaurant and finally tried it on a rainy day. My friend and I ordered the Pho Dac biet ( noddle soup with 3 different kind of beefs ) , Bun thit ga (cold noddle salad with chicken sate ), salad rolls, ice tea and vietnamese drip coffee. We were the only customers at the restaurant during lunch time. But the server seems to be more focus on playing with her cell phone than serving us. Despite from the poor service from our server, we are still quite looking forward to try out the food. It is a good sign that she brought out bean sprouts, cilantro, chilli and lime on a separate plate. Those are the same ingredients that I used to enjoy the nice Pho from Oregon. It is also very good that the beef is still pink in the middle and not overcook. Some restaurants serve the beef overcooked and that makes a big difference. The salad rolls is okay and nothing too spectacular. The cold noddle is good portion but the rest of the ingredients is just okay. The price for the food is more expensive than other vietnamese restaurant and I am not sure whether it is justifiable considering the service. I may try one more time during normal dinner hours to see whether the service improves.
