The price was average but not as expensive as I would have thought. You definitely get a lot more bang for your buck the further you get from the city. The water is cold but as clear and stunning as the Caribbean. The island offers some awesome camping right on the beach and has several hiking trails. A must see if you happen to be in the area. Make sure to book your tickets and permission slips in advance since they only allow a certain amount of people on the island. Go early in the morning if possible since it tends to get more crowded towards the afternoon.

The water is so clear, clean, transparent, emmerald you feel like being in a caribbean island, the sand is so white, the only difference is probably the water temperature (it's the atlantic ocean after all). The only way to stay there is to go camping and to do so you need to book in advance as there're some restrictions on how many people can stay in the island at the same time. It's a natural reserve and it's very looked after. the only way to get there is catching a catamaran in vigo or cangas.

It's just a few minutes walk from the seafront, the boulevard, Plaza Fefiñanes and other squares. The owners are really kind, making it feel more like a bed and breakfast and honoring the description "hotel familiar". The rooms have a good standard and the prices are really good (€45-60, depending the season). A few years ago when we stayed her, we got very ill from eating a lot of different seafood mixed with a lot of different alcoholic drinks (... oops, our own fault) and when we got home to the hotel the owner immediately noticed this. She made us rice water (the water in which the rice is boiled), supposedly a secret Galician miracle drink for stomach illness. It seemed to help. The day before the cleaner had put our wet shoes in the sun on the French balcony. What a service! It has a small cafe on the ground floor: cafeteria Bodegón with a nice view on the church. When wanting a cheaper and less touristy hotel (like the Parador) as a fallout base for exploring the country during the day, this hotel serves the purpose.

However, if you are trying to stay in shape after eating all the delicious Spanish food all day long, this communal swimming pool with gym might be an option. It's not fancy and you will find yourself surrounded with only locals and especially (in the morning) with oldies. Also note that it might be busier during classes, like Aquavit and swimming lessons. A days ticket costs €5,- (May 2016) and gives you access to all the facilities, including a jacuzzi. One last caution before going swimming. First of all, be prepared to get changed in a communal area. And while doing that be prepared to do that together with oldies not scared to share both their naked bodies and the town's news in Gallego (no Castellano spoke here). You will always get the weather of the day and if lucky some juicy gossips. Secondly, get to know the system. There are only a few lanes marked with "bajo", "medio" and "alto", referring to levels. You will find the oldies ignoring those signs; they will be every where. Even the slowest will be in the high level lane. Do not pretend you can change that system and find a way to work around them. Lastly, enjoy this as part of your cultural experience. Because there is nothing as good as really diving into local's way of life during a holiday (at least for me).

San Amaro offers several places you can have a drink or diner: next to the swimming pool, on the balcony, on the patio or inside a refurbished "horreo", a typical building you will find everywhere in Galicia. The breakfast is suberb, no standard hotel food; fresh fruit, breads and pastelles. The view from the breakfast room is magnificent; overlooking the vineyards and surroundings. This place is really special and if you are looking for a special hotel to spend a view nights in total relaxation: this is the palace to be! (€95,-/€160,- depending on season and room).

The restaurant grows the majority of their vegetables and sources other products locally if possible to provide the highest quality dishes. Offering dishes ranging from tapas and a copa to multi course meals for groups, special events and meetings. I have enjoyed every visit to the hotel, restaurant and we visit there regularly. With only 12 rooms, the location is very intimate and well managed. The staff are very professional and several languages are spoken there, just ask.
