This Tesco Express (formerly Tesco Metro) location is over two floors on Market Street, on the…read morecorner going onto Brown Street, right opposite the Arndale. It is probably the largest convenience store in the city centre, stocking a range of essentials and a little bit more over two floors, you can get between the floors using an escalator, but there also is lift access (the lift is super slow though and has been for years!). There is a decent selection of to-go food and drinks, including a Costa Express coffee machine, you can also find the occasional item on the small yet useful hot food counter, but that does tend to go fast. The layout of the store is easy to follow, I personally dislike the two-floor format for a store like this, as it means having to spend more time going up/down escalators and searching around the store, this is the type of store you want to get in and out quickly, and being over two floors and a lack of supporting mobile payment similar to Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer nearby, there are drawbacks. Most of the staff seem friendly and helpful, but there are a couple of bad apples. There are plenty of self-service checkouts, and a couple of manned checkouts too, there always seems to be a handful of machines either not in use or broken down, so there's always a wait at the checkout for some reason. The prices are much higher now than they were under the Tesco Metro brand, so you are paying a good bit more than you would in a regular Tesco store, which is annoying! 4* - A good and large store in the city centre, yet could be far better.

For example, their small aisle of kitchen supplies will contain some tupperware and assorted pots and pans, but you won't be able to find a variety of sizes, or measuring cups, or even a ladle. Just strange that it'd be missing these common items that you'd assume would be stocked in abundance. They do stock heavily on processed junk, so if that's what you're looking for you won't be disappointed. Rows upon rows of crisps, chocolates, frozen processed foods, etc. Their fresh produce, on the other hand, is again lacking in comparison to other stores of this size. They're probably stocking the items that others favour, otherwise it's just a poor business model, but the lack of fresher options turns me off from returning here more frequently.

A typical large Tesco store, where you go in through a sheltered car-park and then up a high gradient walkway into the main store, there is also a lift if you prefer which is right by the Costa Coffee location which is inside the store. The store could do with some TLC from some areas to match the modern, large, grand exterior with the slightly outdated interior. The selection in most areas was pretty good, they had a great selection of branded ready meals and soups but this came at the expense of their Tesco Finest selection, which I actually prefer. While they had a fantastic selection of booze, I do find their to-go food range was a little disappointing, most other areas were average/good. Scan as You Shop Facilities are offered by this store, like most big supermarkets now, they also have the newer, more modern scanners (only in a selected number of stores) which I find are cooler and easier to use, making your shopping experience much quicker. The staff are friendly too. 4* - My favourite out of the supermarkets in Burnley town centre, not a bad Tesco location for sure.

They have better deals, a better selection (well, the bigger ones like the Burnley location does anyway), and a healthy book aisle. Truly one stop shopping, Tesco is a discovery waiting to happen. One criticism of this location in particular is that they keep moving things-- it may not seem like a huge deal, but when you're used to finding your, oh, minced turkey in one place and then all of the sudden it's not there anymore, it's a little off-putting. Also, they stop carrying things every so often. Not just run out of it-- just completely stop selling it, without warning or notification. Like Method hand soap and Tom's toothpaste. Who's with me to join the campaign for consistent products at Tesco? (Or at least to get them to keep carrying the stuff they used to sell?). In any case-- yay, Tesco!

I'm not a fan of ASDA Hulme…read more.. It's great in that it's huge, even had clothes and technology stuff upstairs... The downsides far outweigh the good! The veg section smells like sick... in the last two weeks I've been 3-4 times and each time the fresh produce section stinks... it's really off-putting and means I don't end up buying anything fresh. There's also a larger than normal amount of rude people shopping there. Pushing past you, generally irate customers... on top of this we always seem to get a member of staff on the checkouts that is stuck on slow... All in all I like having a good meander around to see what the retail giants have on offer but I find when I visit ASDA Hulme I just want to get out of there ASAP. Sorry ASDA Hulme you just don't cut mustard... and you stink...

Back in Liverpool myself and my better half would become truely excited at the prospect of visiting…read morethe local Asda. Why I hear you cry? Because as students in a time where most clubs/pubs did not have a 24hr license and shut at 1am/2am there was nothing more fum that a drunken wander around asda to see what rubbish we could buy. When we arrived in Manchester we had no idea that round the corner to our delight there was....a 24hr Asda. However gone are the days that we cannot stay in the clubs/pubs til 4am and now Asda has become to us what it is to every other grown up individual....a hassle on a Sunday, an obstacle course through crying children and down and outs. I am only consoled by the fact we do stay in the clubs/pubs till 4am and that our drunken trips to ASDA have not ceased to continue because we are getting old and boring. Asda we still love you, we love you for making us feel at home wherever we go.

A pretty decent Sainsbury's store located on Lord Sheldon Way, in-between Ashton West Metrolink…read more(for the restaurants at Ashton Moss) and IKEA, I prefer using the former stop to get here on foot as it's pretty hard to navigate the roundabout on foot. It is a little difficult to get to on foot as a result of this, but it can be done. A pretty modern store, it has the only Argos store in Ashton now after their branch in The Arcades shut down, it also houses a Lloyds Pharmacy; both of which are pretty much a given when visiting a Sainsbury's nowadays. I couldn't find every item I came in for, but they did have a good selection in most areas, especially the Nespresso Compatible Capsules, they had the new Christmas blend variety in which I haven't seen in any store before (October 2020) I had mixed experiences with staff members, based on three interactions - One shown me where a product was - Someone else told me the aisle number - I was ignored by another staff member. 3* - Couldn't get the items I came in for which was a shame, good selection in most areas, however.

The store it's self is a good size, with a large clothing Dept and House hold goods section. Both of which are well staffed and kept nice and tidy. It has an instore bakery and Deli counters. The store has a good selection of foods like most sainsbury's stores, You can always find staff on the shop floor who are always willing to help and very friendly. You find all the offers you expect in sainsburys and the Quality is always good. I've never had to wait long to be served. The Cafe in this store is fantastic, always clean and well stocked. As with Asda stores nationwide, they have a Seattles best coffee machine here, they is one just outside the cafe, where I got mine from and inside the cafe. I found this coffee to taste actually quite good, especially compared to the disastorous one I got from a machine from the same company at the Sport City store, where they was no Caramel syrup and just tasted weird and dreadful. They was a nice amount of hazzlenut in it and the coffee was quite nice and creamy at this branch. This store has a Pharmacy, cafe and also numerous pizzas like for Pizza and Chicken. The staff seemed nice in the store in general, the checkout woman was quite nice and even let me take a free bag for life, it is a nice design with the Quality Street brand advertised on it, they replace it free when it breaks so I have got a good deal. Even 6p for such a strong, reusable bag is nice and Asda's policy makes it certainly a bag for life. This store has some good stock, with quite a few brands of Gluten Free sausage however the Free From area in general is quite poor, especially in the frozen although I did manage to find an Amy's Kitchen Mushroom soup, which I rarely see in supermarkets. This store has a nice design in some parts especially near the Pizza and Chicken counter however I find it dissapointing that the yogurt drinks are seperate from the yogurts and the sausages are away from the meat in general, hence much different from the typical layout. I would prefer it to follow more of a traditional ASDA layout though as although it was nice in some parts, it wasn't in others and it was confusing. They was quite a few samples on my visit, one with Fruit and Crossiants, another with Cheese and Crackers, and another with Pancakes and Blueberries, apart from the fruit they was nothing gluten free on sample, The checkout woman did offer me some cheese on its own but due to cross contamination, I had to refuse as she was spreading the cheese on the crackers on the knife, she picked mine up with, without washing it, If I would of ate it it could of made me very ill. They…read moremay still be located in a shopping centre with quite a few other shops and restaurants such as A Card Factory, Greggs and Subway but this ASDA store does not have a Cafe itself making it a nightmare to do all your things in one place, or find somewhere that avoids cross contamination for Coeliacs like me. I may have said for the Chadderton branch, yes this is okay but the Harpurhey branch does not have it, that is right they do have a nice range of products here but still this isn't a great store. I couldn't even get a bottled water, a member of staff told me they did not have any and for me to go over the road. I am sure a big store like ASDA would have bottled water, the staff could also of been more polite in telling me this or checked for me. It is unlucky to have 1 bad incident with a member of staff but another one in 2 constitutive visits is really disappointing. One thing I do not like about ASDA, Despite being cheaper than Tesco for most things is that they do not have a loyalty scheme like Tesco's Clubcard or The Nectar Card of Sainsburys. This ASDA Does have a large clothes section if you need to look for clothes and get your groceries, you can do both of these in the same place. This ASDA store has a nice range of Gluten Free sausage and even had some on sample, they have The Black Farmer, Heck, Butchers Selection and their own Extra Special range (Avaliable in quite a few interesting flavours!) This ASDA does also have a DVD section and follow the traditional ASDA look for most items such as Milk and Starbucks Frappucinio Beverages at the fridge on the back wall near the DVD and Clothes sections, which strech to the back of the store. This ASDA has a partnership with Cresta Cars, if you use the freephone here you can get a token which gives you 75p off your journey and they do come in a few minutes. Due to the range of some products, I can't give this ASDA one star but I really don't think it deserves more than two. This store has no coffee machine either, a few local ASDA stores do but it seems the store that is desperate for one (no cafe£, doesn't have one.
