If you'd like a beautiful and reverential Catholic Mass, this is the church for you. If other Catholic Masses are leaving you feeling spiritual empty, your soul will be nourished and your faith buoyed at St. Joseph the Worker.
I absolutely love this church; I feel happy every time I enter it. The Catholic Church of your memories and from the movies. A beautiful church, the loveliest around, not updated and modernized like so many California churches. The priests are wonderful, kind men, and homilies are moving and illuminating. The parishioners are a diverse group, with all ages and ethnicities.
The priests there are doing the impossible: They are making the Novus Ordo Mass (that is, the post Vatican II Mass) reverential and worshipful like the traditional Latin Mass. The organ and choir are situated on the balcony, just as it should be (rather than front and center, with the focus on them, not God). The priests often integrate Latin prayers along with the English. The priests frequently face the (gorgeous) altar, helping us to put our attention on Christ. (This is how all Catholic Masses were conducted before Vatican II.) And the Masses are done slowly and beautifully, with the attention on God. Silence is allowed and Masses aren't rushed, dumbed down, feel-good experiences.
The Masses now end with the prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel. This is a prayer for protection that was prayed at the end of every Catholic Mass prior to Vatican II. And look what has happened to the Church since then? I am very grateful that this church has re-instituted this important prayer for spiritual protection.
For the record, I can't believe that people go on Yelp and complain about a church's website. I mean, does that really matter? This is a church, people. I personally prefer the priests celebrating the Sacraments, helping the poor, and officiating over funerals rather than devoting time to putting the latest bells and whistles on their website.
And then there are those who want to criticize this church because they don't like the teachings of the Catholic Church, which make them feel badly about themselves (boo hoo). If you don't want to hear the teachings of the Catholic Church at a Catholic church, then my suggestion would be to go Episcopalian. read more
