The shrine to St. Ali's coffee on the wall inside Madame Frou Frou says it all - a focus on simple but pure and good products to make a lovely breakfast or lunch. The breakfast menu includes the usual suspects - poached eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, haloumi and labne for those that love variety in their Greek cheeses. A sharp intake of breath as I read the top of the menu BLACK STAR pastries also available. Oh my god I can actually be served something from Black Star on a Sunday without waiting outside like a chump in Newtown for 20 minutes. Yay!! I've now found the perfect reasons to return - St. Ali's brew and a slab of Black Star brownie. Back to brekky -I order the Mamma's Beans - broad beans stewed in tomato, poached egg, labne, sourdough - $13 Jacqui orders the Smoked salmon, avocado, labne on linseed toast with olive oil and lime juice - $9 We both order soy cappuccinos. ..sorry did I mention awesome St. Ali's single origin beans?? We order and pay at the counter (Cash only) - our coffees come out promptly and our breakfasts about 10-15 later so not bad for a Sunday. Everything is delicious and fresh, my poached egg could have been poached less but all yummy and simple. The service was minimalist but fast and prompt and the Black Star pastries tantalised me at the counter as my friend picked up another soy cap to go. Great addition to the Glebe Point Road offerings - next time we'll try the paninis as you can't go wrong with Sonoma bread. Or maybe the Black Star treats or pies.

Breakfasts were satisfactory and filling, with the standard offerings and a few oddballs (cous cous soaked in pomegranate - must try this in future). They have the seating from an old cinema - I suspect it's the old seating from the Valhalla down the road when it was operating. Having lived in Chi-town for many years, my affliction for an all beef frankfurter on sesame seed bun, runs deep. (The hot dog is topped with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers and a dash of celery salt. The complete assembly of a Chicago hot dog is said to be "dragged through the garden" due to the many toppings. I digress. With about 10 options at the hotdog man - I finally chose the pork and fennel dog topped with sauerkraut, and mustard as it resembled the Chicago style I love so much. So, as others have commented, this is a very odd place, and the wife and I had been joking about the shady appearance of this place ever since we moved to Glebe. It's just bizarre, it's mostly empty, there's hardly anything in the displays, the shelves look like they're barely stocked, but it doesn't matter, because without fail, the front display that looks out over the street will be chock full of a myriad of colorful pyramids of Rocky Road delights! You can tell they actually sell a lot of it, because as you pass back and forth at different times of the day, the stockpile dwindles, but without fail, towards the end of the day, the great pyramids are rebuilt! Like the Syrens of Greek mythology, those pyramids finally called us into port here yesterday, and they did not disappoint! We rocked up into the Carlton, spent 2-3 minutes waiting for someone to come out of the back of the store, which seemed to fit. We inquired about a couple of things, and then got right to the point, what the deal with the RR in the window? He told us it's made off site somewhere and delivered just about everyday, so it's always fresh. I have to admit, after seeing the joint, I was a little glad to hear it's made elsewhere... Anyway, being unable to decide on which of the four flavors I wanted, I went with the handy 4-pack, and I was glad I did! We hustled home, and threw on a movie, and began the journey! The chocolate mint and the strawberry blocks were great, smooth chocolate, chewy bits of candy and marshmallow all throughout, just perfect! But the wife and I's favorites were definitely the white chocolate and the milk-chocolate, both were smooth and delicious and just an awesome compilation of lollies, chocolate and marshmallow! So, all in all, don't let the Carlton scare you away, I wouldn't get much else in here, but the Rocky Road is the best I've had in Sydney, by a long way!
