A small mom and pop restaurant located just off Cannery Row! Me and my friend visited yesterday for dinner after spending all day at Monterey Bay Aquarium. It wasn't busy, so we were able to be seated immediately. They have 3 TV screens playing, but the restaurant is actually fairly quiet overall (which I usually prefer bc it's better for table conversation). I ordered a dinner bento box, which comes with miso soup, rice, salad, and 2 meats. For me 2 meats, I got chicken teriyaki and a California roll (8 pcs). I really liked the miso soup and California roll! I wish I had gotten a different meat besides the chicken, but it was still pretty good overall. My friend ordered 2 sushi rolls and they were cutely decorate with mini umbrellas! When we got the check, they served us almond cookies and they were really good! Shout out to our server who was really nice and dealt with our shenanigans! The food was served fairly quickly as well, so we were happy with that. Would come back again! read more

Kazu was always so friendly and just a sweet man! We got the sushi and nigiri combination to share. It was a LOT at a very reasonable price and we loved the hamachi toro and unagi nigiri! The rice was a bit too sour and since I'm not eating much rice, I would probably ask him to cut the rice next time. I love the yellow tail and next time I'm going to have the scallop, rainbow roll with tempura, and their other variety. Met Josh, another friendly customer who is like a son to kazu And it was a very nice and great experience! We also bought more California roll to go for on the road back to the Bay area :) He's open everyday from 5:00 to 11:00 but he will be closing for a day or two or when he has corporate big orders for catering. If you want sushi after 9pm your options are very limited. We went to a movie and hubby wanted sushi after. I had been here eons ago. Tonight we arrived about 8:30? Definitely a local spot. I think the sushi chef and the waitress gal are the owners- which is pretty cool. We ordered a Rainbow roll, 2 Philadelphia rolls and a negihama roll. All was tasty. The green tea is HOT. I mean borderline scalding, so watch out for that. Service was slow, but honesty I didn't mind one bit. My boyfriend and I are visiting from Chicago and we came here after reading the reviews. There is a sushi place very close to here but we are SO glad we came here instead. The reviews are right- this restaurant is ran entirely by an elderly Japanese couple. They are so hard working and welcoming and the vibes in here are immaculate. We seated ourselves near the sushi bar. I highly recommend sitting by the boats especially if it isn't busy. It was a pleasure chatting with the owner and he sent our orders down the boats which was entertaining in itself haha. We enjoyed the atmosphere so much we stayed and had a couple Sapporo beers, which they served us with chilled glasses. Before we left, the owner brought out a giant bottle of sake and gave us and another couple sake glasses and we all drank together and toasted! He even asked us all of our shirt sizes and made sure we left with merch! We love the shirts we got and will cherish our memories here. I cannot recommend this place enough. Sakura Japanese Restaurant is owned and run by a cute elderly couple. They literally do everything at the restaurant from making the food, to serving, and to cleaning the tables! The entire time we were there, the couple was so busy making the orders from dine in and take out orders they had to sadly turn down customers ): While the wait was long, it was totally worth it. The tempura and teriyaki combo was crazy good with the perfect portion. The rainbow tempura roll had a good amount of sashimi as well and was plated in a cute mini boat. We made sure to not leave any food to waste (: You can really tell how much effort this couple takes to run their restaurant. If you're in the area, please give this place a try. We ended up choosing this spot because it happened to be one of the only nearby places by our hotel that were open late on a Monday night. We ordered the salmon sashimi app, the sushi & sashimi combo, and Sakura special roll #5. The sushi and sashimi combo alone was filling, but glad we got to try a roll. We were dying of hunger at 9pm and were looking for a quick bite when we saw this little, warmly lit place. We walked in and were greeted with a wave of warmth from inside, both physically and by the smiles of the owners, a cute elderly Japanese couple. We sat at the bar and had a great conversation with the owner/sushi chef who boasted over 36+ years of perfecting the sushi craft! He even showed us the fresh catch of the day "toro" tuna, which is locally sourced! Good we ordered was the Sashimi Platter which came with a house salad + ginger vinaigrette and miso soup. Be mindful, the owners also are the only staff so add some time to your restaurant-ing plans (they are meticulous, really 'take their time'). I heard good things about this restaurant from a colleague and what sold me was that this place is Japanese owned and operated with a reasonable standard price. I loved the "hole-in-the-wall" vibe I got from this place. And loved that the chef/owner was really upfront about the back up they were having from a party of 10+ ppl. Seeing as how he was the only chef there, I wanted to be patient and wait for it. The restaurant is dimly lit from little lanterns and had an authentic feel to it. Service was still pretty good for how busy they were and we were taken care of and checked in on. At some point, the chef himself came to deliver updates on our orders whenever he delivered a part of our order. The staff was overall pretty engaging. Head chef was like seeing my own grandpa working in his old chefs attire. Quite heartwarming. The rolls were really simple and really yum. My husband read good reviews about this place. It seems that it is run by an elderly Japanese couple and they do everything! The husband is the sushi chef. The wife takes orders and does the cooking in the back. I only have a photo of the sushi combination platter. We had also ordered a side of tempura. Every thing was delicious and the sashimi very fresh! We would definitely go back. But as there are only two people doing all the cooking and serving, it was definitely a leisurely meal. We are two east coasters on a west coast trip and were craving some sushi. We came in this place for the reviews and I can't recommend it enough! Both the food and the atmosphere are awesome. Definitely recommend dine in instead of take out. The place has been (34 years) and continues to be ran by a man and his wife (owners) who are such hard workers and so passionate. The food might take a little longer than usual if it's busy or a big order but you can tell it's authentic and prepared so genuine. I highly recommend sitting near the chefs table at the sushi bar and definitely talk to the owners. Sakura is a hidden gem! The owners/staff are absolutely delightful. My cousin is a frequent customer and couldn't wait to share this charming sushi restaurant with us. Everything we tried was super good and you could taste the quality of the fish in the freshness. This is very much a go-with-the flow type of dining experience. Don't be in a hurry if you plan to stop here. It can take a while for food to come out but never fear, you will be quite pleased with the flavor and quality of your order once it arrives. I recommend ordering some sake and settling in. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's not exactly pristine. In town for a conference and decided to have dinner here again last night. Place is busy for a Monday evening. Ordered an Ama Ebi and Chirashi. Food is still fantastic, Ama Ebi is fresh as can be, fried prawn head is nice and crunchy and prawn it self is nice and sweet! Chirashi is much much better than the one I had at Morimoto's in Napa, fish is fresher (hamachi is one of the best I had), portion larger and sushi rice is spot on! After dining, I chatted with the chef/owner. What a delightful guy! I mentioned to him that he gave my son a shirt 7 months ago, he got super excited and handed me another shirt for me this time! This is a solid 4.5. Legit Japanese food and sushi by an authentic Japanese chef. They've been open for 34 years and there's a reason why. The menu is simple and not too fancy with the overabundance of fusion style rolls you see at a lot of other places, but the fish is FRESH and the salmon and hamachi melt in your mouth with the buttery flavor I love. But if you're interested to having good quality sushi from a staff of two (one server and one sushi maker), then this is the place to be. Prices are surprisingly low for the huge amount of food you get!, and the quality of food is 8/10. Their $32 Sushi Combination Dinner was enough to feed 1.5 people. Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura was fried well and the Udon and Saba were some of our favorites. The Sushi and Sashimi quality was excellent. A small, local restaurant that's open late to any travelers in the area. I would only come if I was really craving Japanese food, but other than that I wouldn't spend a meal here if there were other options available. The place was extremely dark when we came in. The lighting was super dim, which was unexpected because it was already so dark outside. There was a sushi chef behind the counter and one server working hard to attend to the other 4 tables. The place is definitely hole in the wall -- the menus had a smell and the walls were dirty. I know this is a gem for the locals because the sushi chef talked about his life for the entire hour of our meal; it was welcome for the first couple of minutes but his talk definitely slowed down his service. Everyone who ordered sushi (or a sushi combination) got their food much later than those who ordered food from the kitchen (tempura, beef, chicken, etc.). We ordered a bento box with beef teriyaki and tempura, a bento box with chicken teriyaki and tempura, and a maguro and hamachi donburi bowl. We all got miso soup as a result of our order and it was piping hot and filled to the brim. It was tasty but extremely salty. My friend couldn't finish hers because it was so salty. The bento boxes were huge and definitely felt justifiable for the price. The teriyaki sauce was delicious but, again, really salty. I finished all my rice and 2 glasses of water because of how salty it was. My friend wiped the sauce off half way through her meal because the sauce was so generously applied. The tempura was perfect -- the sauce was delicious and complimented the perfect fry on the tempura. The salad wasn't your typical Japanese-inspired salad; it had arugula and cherry tomatoes and was covered in this sweet and sour vinaigrette. The donburi was disappointing; it was $30 and had only a few pieces of sashimi over a huge mound of rice. The restaurant uses the same rice for all dishes so the donburi's "sushi rice" was really just white rice seasoned with rice vinegar and sugar. It was disappointing and something I wouldn't recommend ordering on your visit. At the end of our meal, they gave us almond cookies which were a nice touch. Overall, this place is generous in their servings (for the bento boxes) and a local favorite. It isn't touristy but that has its own charm. I wouldn't seek this restaurant out but it's a nice place to eat a meal late at night. read more

My husband and I found this place almost by accident. We were walking around Cannery Row and we were starting to get hungry. Almost everything in the area was over an hour wait so we got on Yelp and started calling up places. We luckily found this place and there was no wait! When we arrived the owner was outside enjoying a beer, the lights were off, and the closed sign was turned. We thought they were closed, but the owner was so welcoming and sweet. We sat outside and really enjoyed ourselves with yummy good, constant drinks, and fun company. We were craving some udon and donburi because we had already been drinking. The udon and rice bowls were both pretty good. It could have used some spicy sauce, but overall pretty yummy. This place is really special! We took a picture with the owner and ended up meeting 2 awesome guys at this restaurant and became friends with them. If you guys read this, message me! Only come here if you've got hours to spare and aren't starving!! Came down to Monterey for my girlfriend's birthday weekend and decided to find a sushi spot Saturday night. It was late, around 9:45, and Sakura was one of the few places still open (kudos to the elderly couple running the shop). Sakura has 5 tables setup outside on the patio and one heat lamp (thanks COVID) and 3/5 tables were occupied when we arrived. We asked for a table for 2 and the grandma said, "it would take a while to clean because they were super busy" but the grandpa chimed in and said "no it won't! Hurry up! (to the grandma)" I should mention it was only the grandma and grandpa working that night, but I didn't see many phone orders or a line going out the door. The couple was very cute and friendly but moved fairly slow and definitely can't handle running a restaurant/bar on their own! We waited 10 min for them to bus the tables and then ordered water from the grandma. Unfortunately, she then disappeared for 20 minutes and it took a friendly gentleman (whom I assume was a regular, definitely not an employee) to bring us our waters. At this point, we were thinking of bouncing because it was 10:15 and we were starving!! Unfortunately for us, no other places in Monterey are open past 10 (save Jack in the Box or Dennys)... So, reluctantly, we proceeded to order one nigiri combo and one rainbow roll. We waited another FIFTY MINUTES for our food to arrive. In which time, the couple who had arrived at the same time and sat next to us also ordered but decided it wasn't worth the wait and left. I will admit, it was wrong of them to order food and leave without paying, but boy were we jealous! When the grandpa finally finished our nigiri combo, he joked with us that "some people just can't wait!" to which we akwardly laughed along while guzzling down our first dish. It took another 10 minutes for him to finish the rainbow roll, but only 5 for us to devour. The sushi itself was pretty standard and reasonably priced, but nothing special. We definitely weren't expecting a 2 hour meal at 9:45pm during COVID with only 3 or 4 other tables. Still, I would've given 2 stars but when paying for the bill, they definitely overcharged me or included a secret service fee! We ordered the regular nigiri combo ($20.95) and one rainbow roll ($12.95) and were charged $41.00. Unless Monterey has a 19% sales tax, I have no clue why our bill was so high. Unfortunately, I was also too tired and fed up to argue so just paid and left. I can tell this place is popular with the locals who might have all the time in the world, and the grandpa seemed to be giving them free sake... We came through the Monterey area after an afternoon at the 17 Mile drive. Needless to say we were starving and couldn't wait the few hours to get home to eat. We arrived as they opened and placed our order. I can't say it was a large order as it was literally 4 bentos (2 of which were the same) and one order of California rolls. We were told 40 minutes, and didn't get our food until 65 minutes later. The restaurant is ran by an elderly couple, and there was one person waiting for their order as I arrived back (yes we left and came back) who was given a free shirt for waiting. And then another couple who arrived during the last 10 minutes of my wait who were offered a free beer because things were backed up due to my LARGE ORDER! Whoa! I could care less about the sympathy gifts but don't make it seem as though things were happening SLOWLY because we ordered 4 bentos and a California roll. Nonetheless, the food arrived. One bento consist of 3 styrofoam containers and a box (one for the meat/fish, one for the tempura, cup for the soup and a box for the rice). Do the math and you'll know exactly how many county banned styrofoam containers we had. The food was ok, thus the two stars. The beef teriyaki was a bit tangy but decent. The fish teriyaki was good and the chicken teriyaki were cut in cubes and used a less tangier sauce. The California roll had the usual cucumber and avocado and a stick of imitation crab meat. It's Christmas Day of what has been known as the crazy historic year of 2020. I'm visiting a friend at Pebble Beach and we're both living the solitary life without friends, family, or fanfare this holiday. It's 7pm and we are heading back to Pebble Beach through the wasteland of closed businesses from Seaside through Monterey to Pacific Grove. Hunger has struck. My desperate calls to restaurants keep ringing, unanswered... my friend and I agree to target sushi. Still no answers. We pull down Lighthouse and see Sakura is open. We slide to a stop and I rush in. The restaurant is skeleton-crewed by the main man sushi chef and another lady. I perused the menu hastily while I waited to get my order taken. I had never been in pre-COVID let alone before; it is a restaurant that potentially has a lot of ambiance when it is open inside. As it was, it was dim and I wasn't sure what to make of it. Then the chef came out and came behind the bar to take my order. I slowly rattled out menu items, of course hungry so unable to decide. He patiently took my order and when I finished ordering he told me it would be 20 minutes. I waited outside and hung out with my socially distanced friend in the car. I came back 15 minutes later and the sushi chef was working fast-- it was so busy, he said. I could tell he was tired. I waited patiently and took the time to admire the decor, the souvenir shop at the back of the restaurant, the 20th anniversary company picture on the wall. I realized this place was legit. He made kind conversation with me and packed my order himself. As he rang me out for my order total I tipped him; he beamed and as I signed my ticket he brought me a complimentary tshirt from the merchandise selection. This grinch's heart grew three time it's size this Christmas. read more

This place is so cute. When we went right when they opened, it was just a man and women (I assume they're the owners). Please be kind to them, they are older and a little slow but can still produce some of the best quality fish I've ever had. Nothing but good things to say! Keep this place open!!! read more

We were in town for a couple of days and decided to give this place a try due to the high reviews and it was the only sushi place that was open after 930pm. When we got here there were a few tables with customers. We ended up ordering a couple of rolls, a few nigiri, udon, and an appetizer. They are super short staffed, only one person working outside and one cook in the back. It took very long for us to get our food and the waitress also ended up forgot to put one of our dishes in. It took so long that we told her not to worry about it. She apologized and advised they are short staffed and ended up putting the closed sign up early since there are a lot of tables waiting. The three stars isn't for their service as I do know that it is super difficult to get workers nowadays so I can't blame them too much for that. The three stars is for the food quality, while tasting okay, I did end up having a bad stomach flu the day after. I eat a lot of sushi and this is my first time having a reaction like this. Maybe it's just a one time thing but I think it's important to share my experience. It was an important night too after intense convo with bf. We then had some of the freshest most tasty rolls and udon ever. We ordered the Special Rainbow Roll and Nabeyaki udon. Finally had the pleasure of dining in at Sakura's- and honestly what a pleasure it was! I want to preface this review by saying do not go to this restaurant expecting a quickly paced meal- but rather something more akin to dining at someone's home. Kazu and Keiko run the entire restaurant by their lonesome at their own pace in a humble cozy interior, and if you're willing to wait your patience will be handsomely rewarded with delicious fresh fish presented to you with the utmost care and artistry of even the best sushi restaurants- and honestly I feel Sakura's stands with them. A lovely experience that ended with the Chef giving me a hand printed and illustrated t shirt (which you should definitely check out they are SO cool). Sakura... I YOU! read more

My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place by accident, but it wholly made our evening and week. The restaurant is run by a sweet elderly couple, and it has been open for +35 years. The sushi was fresh and very well portioned - we were both impressed at the quality of the fish and sushi rice. The lights, decor, and seating made us feel both at home and in Japan - we gladly spent our whole Friday evening enjoying our meal experience. To top it off, the owner generously surprised us with two custom Sakura t-shirts (with his hand-drawn designs) at the end of our meal! This place was endearing, humble, and authentic. Udon is served in a cast iron pot, so it stayed hot the whole time. Spider roll has fresh tempura crab and avocado. Everything was hot & so fresh, which you can see the elderly couple make themselves in the back. I got to talking to the elderly man and he said things have been hard since covid hit and they haven't been able to hire anyone, so it's just been the two of them and they're one of the only spots open late.
