A seriously awesome, outdoor, casual Mexican restaurant in Frogtown. One of the things I love most about it is the entire restaurant is outdoors, the only indoor part is the bar and kitchen where the drinks and food come from. Many parts are covered, so there is plenty of shade as well. Our server Frankie was extremely polite and also made the experience better. They have a fairly large menu with a lot of great options on it and parking in this area is fairly easy. We were able to find a free street spot on the residential street directly behind the restaurant. It was quite crowded when we arrived for an early Friday night dinner but Service was fast so the wait times were never that long. We start off with the Ceviche and Papas Bravas, and both were fantastic. We especially loved the Ceviche Tostadas and honestly, I could've had a dozen of them. They were fantastic. I ordered a Carne Asada Burrito for my entrée and that too was fantastic. I added sauce on top, which I thought was a nice addition and a bit different than the versions I grew up with in San Diego. On our way home, we frequently passed this place and often saw a long line outside -- which, as we now know, was actually for the club next door. ;-) Still, the restaurant always looked cozy, especially with its inviting patio, so last night we finally gave it a try with a friend. We shared the nachos with salsa and guacamole to start, and they were really good. Our individual dishes were very good as well. The word "great" is always a little difficult for me when it comes to Mexican food, simply because it is not one of my favorite cuisines. That said, I genuinely liked the tacos I ordered. Unfortunately, there was one problem. I really cannot eat cilantro, and I made that very clear to our extremely kind waitress when ordering. "No problem," she said. Sadly, one of my two tacos arrived absolutely packed with cilantro. Since we had been invited by our friend, I did not want to interrupt an otherwise lovely evening by sending food back or creating a fuss, so I simply left it alone. That decision unfortunately paid me back throughout the night. I really should not eat cilantro. What disappointed me most was that our waitress clearly noticed and even said "oh, it did not work in the second taco" obviously waiting for me to make a decision. A decision I did not want to make - as it was obvious: leave the plate so I can enjoy the other taco while preparing a new one. Considering that I had specifically mentioned the cilantro issue when ordering, I would have expected her to notice what had happened and offer to correct it without me having to make a scene. And that is really the only reason this review dropped from five stars to three. Everything else -- the setting, the food, and the service up to that point -- was very enjoyable. A shame, really. I will definitely give this place another try, and I sincerely hope my next visit gives me every reason to upgrade those three stars. read more

This place has so much potential! The drinks were great and the tacos were good! The Caesar salad though... I'd honestly take it off the menu unless it gets a little more love. It felt like an afterthought and was something you could easily make better at home. Even some grilled romaine, cotija, pepitas, crispy tortilla strips, or a chile lime dressing would make it feel more intentional and fit the menu better. It was lettuce with croutons. I've had Salazar in my 'to-try' list for a long time. We live on the westside and making it way east is not always the easiest. But my birthday calls for special measures. We grouped up and carpooled, 10 of us for dinner on a Saturday night in May. First off, Salazar was super accommodating with my group that went from 6 to 10 over the course of a couple days. We arrived and were seated after the majority of us arrived. This meant a chance to grab a passionfruit margarita at the bar. Salud! It was fruity and delightful. After being seated in the large middle table - which I have to say, I love the rustic vibes, this is a taco spot, not an fancy restaurant, we all decided on chips and guac and a couple plates of nachos. The chips are crispy, salty and perfect. There was a slight wait and they were out of one of my taco choices, but that meant I got to try something I wouldn't have considered: fried zucchini taco. It is a resounding YES from me. Loved the machaca taco and al pastor was in third place (normally a fave of mine, but I thought this one was a little dry and could use more flavor). Finally, I was surprised with a churro plate and a candle with my pals cheering and singing HBD. I loved it! This was a really disappointing evening. The vibe of the place is very cool. Everyone was nice enough. We were seated at 8 pm for a 745 reservation. Had a drink in the bar while waiting. Cocktail tables and bar top were filthy. Drinks were fine. Since we had time before being seated, we'd perused the menu, we knew what we wanted and ordered as soon as the waiter came to the table. My first choice of Trout was sold out (at 8 pm on a Saturday!??) So I went with the pork. Then, they let us know, half way through our apps (that we'd waited a long time to get), my entee selection was actually not available, either. That is completely unacceptable. Shifted to the machaca burrito bowl. Both that and wife's pollo burrito were just okay. WAY too light on protein and overloaded with beans. One thing I love about my hometown of Manhattan, is the fact that you could be in utter luxurious surroundings on one block and two blocks over are industrial environs. Los Angeles is like this too, but you have to drive between these scenarios. So, I happen to love the Riverside Drive (actually both in NYC and LA!), Silverlake, Atwater area with all its boxy apartments and bridges, the gritty but epic LA River and the little Bohemian enclave at its feet, Frogtown. I have reviewed other spots in this little haven and will likely return for more. But, Salazar is likely its most famous venue and with good reason. We were there on a Sunday afternoon at my magic hour when no one is supposed to be crowding us, either for a table or for parking. I was surprised to see Salazar buzzing with diners, coming and going. This was still their off-time because if you go there for dinner or breakfast you are going to be squeezed into a corner. This is a place by locals for locals. I am just glad we stumbled on it when tooling around to absorb the almost brutalist neighborhood it caps. I love this place. Look at the outdoor patio -- rough and worn wooden tables, rickety patinaed metal chairs, giant trees and characteristic black umbrellas. This is raw, as, let's say, Hudson Yards, but even more metallic. And then there is the menu. OMG, so many fabulous things for veg-heads like me. Even though I had studied it carefully at home, I still had to sit for a good 15 minutes and make difficult choices. I ended up with Huevos Rancheros, Guac, roasted purple potatoes (Papas Bravas), and a Phony Negroni -- see my pictures and read the menu descriptions. Everything was highly seasoned, including the complimentary bean dip that accompanied the guacamole. It was hard to resist devouring every inch of each dish. The dishes themselves were beautiful and, oh, lo how wonderful, there were giant linen napkins (black of course!) with steak knives, forks, and ... wait for it ... spoons, big ones! No one seems to be serving spoons any more in LA, except Salazar. I almost cried with happiness. And the take home bag was huge (yay!). Frankie was our waiter. He was hip, cool, smiley and quick. Respect, Frankie! The bill was beyond reasonable -- especially considering the generous portions and high quality, to say nothing of artistry, of every dish. We found parking; the weather was perfect -- cool and sunny; and every kind of human being were our patio-mates, a real melting pot. Huge trees overhead. 4.5 Stars Salazar has been on my radar for quite some time, and I finally had the opportunity to check it out. It's an open-air eatery with an indoor/outdoor bar, so the fact that it was warm & sunny the day of my visit was perfect! The desert like patio provides a relaxing ambiance and an escape from the city. I can imagine it's even prettier at night. On the menu you'll find traditional Sonora style dishes with a modern twist and creative craft cocktails. Our server Will was darling - very friendly and attentive. We ordered Chips & Salsa Vaquera to share. My friend got the Pescado Estilo Baja Taco with a side of Frijoles Negros (vegan beans are also available.) I ordered the Fried Zucchini Taco and the Classic Margarita. The house made chips were light and crispy and the salsa had a slightly smoky flavor. We enjoyed them. My taco was delish! The house made tortilla was topped with a battered zucchini slice, cabbage slaw, chipotle mayo & mango Pico de Gallo. The hand shaken margarita was expertly prepared and refreshing. My friend enjoyed her taco and the beans. We were both happy that we decided to come here. While chatting and soaking in the ambience we happened to notice the resident cat lounging in the sunshine next to us. She's beautiful and her name is Monty. Heard much about Salazar but stopped in for the first time this past week for a couple tacos and more than a couple margaritas. I had the watermelon margaritas which were actually great lol I think they add a lil something to the tajin rim to give it some more tart sweetness. The al pastor taco was my favorite of the two, topped with pineapple it reminded me almost of one of my favorite tacos in Mexico. The carne asada taco was good but truly nothing too spectacular. Passed by Salazar the night before and noticed it was packed, so we decided to come back and check it out for lunch--and I'm glad we did. There's no dedicated parking lot, but we were able to find plenty of street parking nearby without too much trouble. The restaurant is mostly outdoor seating, which was perfect since it was a sunny day--great vibe overall. It's also dog-friendly, which is always a huge plus. Our server greeted us with water and menus right away and got us settled in. We were sticking to a fish-only diet that day, so we ordered a few seafood options to share. We got the shrimp burrito (with queso Chihuahua, red rice, beans, and pico de gallo), the nachos (loaded with queso Chihuahua, chipotle mayo, salsa verde, onions, and cilantro), the ceviche de camarón, and the pescado estilo baja tacos. The ceviche de camarón was a 10/10--super fresh with shrimp, rock cod, avocado, mango, and citrus. So flavorful and refreshing. The pescado estilo baja tacos were also a 10/10--perfectly battered rock cod with great texture and flavor. The shrimp burrito and nachos were solid and satisfying, especially if you're looking for something more filling. The drink menu looked really good, and I ended up ordering a mango leche, which was delicious--sweet, creamy, and refreshing. Overall, great food, great vibe, and definitely worth the visit. I honestly have to wonder whether there's a consistent recipe behind the menu here. As someone from the neighborhood, I genuinely want to support this restaurant, but I also feel it's important to be honest. The biggest issue is the complete lack of consistency. I can order the exact same dish multiple times, yet it tastes completely different every visit. The ingredients change, the cooking method seems different, and even the sauces aren't the same from one visit to the next. I don't know what challenges the restaurant may be dealing with behind the scenes, but because the quality is so unpredictable, I honestly can't recommend it to anyone. And yet, I keep coming back with hope because I still remember how great the food was when I first ate here four years ago. I truly hope the owner sees this. What a charming little place to dine. Apparently a repurposed auto mechanics shop who converted it to a lovely little restaurant where you get to sit outside enjoy the hills around LA and at the same time get superb service an excellent food I had a ranch water which was wonderful and some fish tacos, which were absolutely superb and the weight staff is very pleasant making for a simply enjoyable dining experience. This was our place of choice for dinner during Frogtown Fridays. All of their seating is outside on the deck. Even as the night cooled, we stayed warm thanks to the outdoor heaters. It felt like one big patio summer barbeque or backyard cookout. My tacos were delicious and I was impressed by how buttery and soft the flour tortillas made in house were. This is one of my favorite spots to bring out-of-town guests, so they can feel like they're on a little vacation. It's casual and pretty, and the food just hits. The chips and salsa, too often overlooked, are delicious. The salsa has a smokiness or a roastiness to it that is just so tasty, and the chips are crunchy and substantial, not those thin chips that fall apart when you try to scoop guacamole. First time visiting Salazar and the food was great! We made a reservation for a party of 7 for a surprise baby shower and service did not disappoint. They accommodated us by giving us a huge table to decorate with flowers and gifts. We played a few games which was nice of them to let us just do our thing. Now for the good stuff! Food: asada fries - these were delicious. The asada was well seasoned and cooked. Chips & guacamole were great! Had the right amount of lime! I ordered the red sauce chilaquiles. These had just the right amount of spicy ness. The girls all had different types of tacos and claimed to be very good so I will need to come back and try them. Drinks: I requested a spicy margarita with tajin rim. So damn good and perfect ratio of tequila and other ingredients. Love when I can taste the alcohol and the other ingredients. Overall this place is great for small groups and big groups. The only bad part is the parking. If you come at a busy time the parking can be frustrating. read more
